I've got a 915 D3 9.5 with the Surefit adapter.. The booklet that came with the  club has me confused. At the standard setting of A-1 it looked wide open when completely soled on a flat floor.  I set to B2, which i was told means it's 1 # closed and at the standard (9.5) loft.  it  still looks a little open, when soled flat. i'm looking  for a square face at the 9.5 loft, when soled flat on the floor. Help it hits pretty good at this setting, but I have to hood it a little to line up when addressing the ball.

The settings are with respect to the shaft/hosel. So open means the angle vs the shaft plane is open when going down the top side of the shaft. You still have to aim the face. On some tees, the grass may make it look closed if you lay it on the ground.

there is no setting that will give you a square face when you sole the club on the ground. At A1 the face is 0.5 degrees open.

I've got the booklet. It's just that the numbers and letters are confusing to me.  I don' understand which controls the loft or lie, numbers or letters? or do you have to adjust both at the same time to get where you want to go? right now, B2 appears to be about where I want it.

There is no real progression with the letters and numbers. They are just assigned to positions. The ring in the hosel adjusts loft and lie as it is rotated. The grooves are machined to tilt the head slightly . I keep a photo of the chart on my phone so I can reference it.

My guess, you tend to play with your clubs way closed at impact. Anything that is close to square looks way open to you.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
