What is your experience with ordering a club that was shipped with a defect or blemish? I just received my new custom ordered PING Vault 2.0 ZB Stealth putter and noticed two small scratches or patches where the steel was visible under the black finish. Although they are small blemishes, And I know this will come off a bit snobby, I expect a flawless putter when I pay $300 for a premium milled putter. Thoughts?

Who did you purchase it from? I'd go back to them or even email Ping directly.

Honestly you're just going to scratch it up at some point, but I understand where you're coming from.

I bought it from Golf Galaxy who ordered directly through PING. I tend to keep my putters in very good shape. The couple marks on this putter aren’t like normal wear from turf interaction.  It looks like it may have been dropped during the manufacturing process. Needless to say, it’s a huge buzzkill when you are anxiously waiting for your new putter and it has marks, although small, straight out of the box.

Then I would bring it in and let them know, they'll probably end up shipping it back to Ping.

I'd start at the point of purchase, so in this case Golf Galaxy. More than likely they'll reorder and probably send the other one back to PING for credit.

Contact who you purchased it from first. They will tell you where to go from there. And you do not come off snobby, its a brand new putter it should be in mint condition.

I have 15 year old putters that look brand new on the top, they may get a little worn on the bottom. I ALWAYS use headcovers for my woods and putters so they stay pristine.

Well did you pay $300 for a product that was listed as 'blemished'?  No.  You have every right to expect it to be mint.  Good advice already listed above, hopefully this all goes smoothly for you.

I appreciate all the input! I ran it back out to Golf Galaxy. The rep at GG called PING and they asked us to send it back to them for inspection. Again, the two scratches/blemishes are small, but I’ll be disappointed if they send it back saying it’s not significant enough to replace. A new putter, and a premium one at that, should be flawless out of the box.

Here’s one of the marks.

It looks different in person. Some might thing I’m crazy, but I find it frustrating.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
