In 2016 I was fitted for a PING G driver. It turned out to be the LS model with the Ping Tour 65 S shaft.

I like the driver a lot in terms of performance. According to Arccos I average 267 yards with 18 yards of dispersion.

The one thing I don’t like about it is the sound; which for me translates to feel. To me it sounds like a tin can which kind of ruins the feel for me.

Okay so mid-way through this year, I got a chance to replace it. I got fitted (At a different fitter) and loved the sound/feel of the Cobra F8. So, I got fitted up. Ended up getting the F8+ with the black Project X HZRDUS 6.0 75 gram shaft.

I like this driver a lot too. The sound/feel is great! Here’s the issue; According to Arccos I hit this driver an average of 256 yards with 21 yards of dispersion. So it’s 11 yards shorter and 3 yards less accurate???

I’ve played roughly the same number of holes with each driver (A dozen rounds with each this year), on pretty much the same courses. I’ve switched back and forth, I think I’ve hit the same conditions, or at least enough rounds to get similar data. I know Arccos uses the center of the fairway as my target, which isn’t always the actual target, but I would think that would come out in a 10 round wash.

Neither driver has averaged the distances I was averaging during the fitting session, but I think that’s to be expected. Fitting was done indoors on both, launch monitor not real world, plus you hit driver after driver and kind of groove your swing.

Anyway, I’ve gone back to the PING G now, even though I don’t like the sound it makes. For me it simply performs better.

My question is does anyone game a club that perhaps doesn’t perform as well as another, but because you prefer the feel/sound of it? Or maybe there is another reason to play an underperformer? I mean I really wanted to like the Cobra better. But the data just isn't there.

By the way, if anyone is interested in buying a gently used Cobra F8+......

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

Use the Ping wrench that came with the club and unscrew the round weight on the sole.  Take some yarn and feed in through the hole into the head.  Try about 20 feet of yarn and put the screw back on.

see how u like it.  Sound will be great, it'll add a little weight but you can easily go back in and fish it out to put in more or less yarn.

    • @boogielicious and I are definitely in for the Stay & Play and will need the extra night's stay on Friday. I don't know what the plans are for our group on Friday but even if we don't make it for dinner with the rest of the Friday arrivals, I'll be more than happy to meet up somewhere for a beer or something.
    • Taking your dispersion and distance in consideration I analyzed the 4 posible ways to play the hole, or at least the ones that were listed here. I took the brown grass on the left as fescue were you need to punch out sideways to the fairway and rigth of the car path to be fescue too.  Driver "going for the green"  You have to aim more rigth, to the bunker in order to center your shotzone in between the fescue.  Wood of 240 over the bunkers I already like this one more for you. More room to land between the fescue. Balls in the fescue 11% down from 30% with driver. Improve of score from 4.55 to 4.40. 4 iron 210 yards besides the bunkers.    Also a wide area and your shot zone is better than previous ones. This makes almost the fescue dissapear. You really need to hit a bad one (sometimes shit happens). Because of that and only having 120 yards in this is the best choice so far. Down to 4.32 from 4.40. Finally the 6 Iron 180 yards to avoid all trouble.    Wide area an narrow dispersion for almost been in the fairway all the time. Similar than the previous one but 25 yards farther for the hole to avoid been in the bunkers. Average remains the same, 4.33 to 4.32.  Conclusion is easy. Either your 4iron or 6 iron of the tee are equaly good for you. Glad that you made par!
    • Wish I could have spent 5 minutes in the middle of the morning round to hit some balls at the range. Just did much more of right side through with keeping the shoulders feeling level (not dipping), and I was flushing them. Lol. Maybe too much focus on hands stuff while playing.
