I've been getting familiar with the swing speed radar I recently purchased, and things are getting pretty much settled in.  Anemic as my SS is, I am getting readings of around 65 with six iron and up to about 75 max with driver. I am hitting into a net and I suspect I am holding off a little with driver and I believe that the net is sort of a visual "barrier" sort of thing and I am a little hesitant. . This seems to be about right as from what I have read, the conversion  with SS to yardage (carry) for a driver is 2.4 times the SS, and for 6 iron about 1.7 times.  This would put me in the 180 yard range carry with driver (high end). Am I missing anything?  Also, someone posted, that the portable monitors such as the SSR reads 5 or 6 MPH slower than Trackman or Mevo. Then again, some report the opposite.

  • iacas changed the title to Swing Speeds Irons vs Driver

The barrier thing is real.  We have Sims and nets at work and I'm fine with irons but not driver.

A lot of difference in readings amoung different monitors.  Trackman indoors is tough because u need enough space or it's off.  The SSR I have found to be pretty accurate.  I have had mine for a while as have a few of my LD friends.

Right now I find indoors the GC2 Quad to be dead on.

Try taking it to a range and see if the numbers are the same. I've noticed it too with my MEVO. Into my net I am averaging around 3 mph less. But that may be due to the short distance the MEVO is reading verses at the range.

Interesting? Could there be some mental block where your subconscious doesn’t want to put a hole through the net?

Best thing is to go to a golf store with a sassy salesman saying you don’t hit as far as you think then really really go after it 😂

Good idea. One more thing is, when I concocted my own version of the speed swing, I made up 2 sticks, one heavy and one light. On the light one, I used my Hacker Whacker but failed to take into account that it was a cut down 3 wood shaft so that it is about 4 inches shorter assembled. This makes the readings more or less moot. Still, I can measure improvement, just not representative of perceived distance.

Best to purchase the real thing.

little chance of that given the net is heavy duty archery net, but I do have apprehension of going OVER the net if I happen to sky the driver (which I have done in the past). This forces me to stand closer which really messes up the perception. @boogielicious has the right idea. Also as you stated, I should get the real thing. I saw one on ebay for $160. I think it is the one for seniors which may or may not be more appropriate.

The ratios are not too far off. I think I’m about the same ratio with 6i and driver.

I think it depends upon placement of the sensor. 5-6mph is a little high. My Mevo and SSR when placed precisely are about the same for SS over a ten swing average taking out the misreads.

using the SSR, my readings are pretty much the same regardless of placement, but the "angle" seems to have a noticeable effect. When I had the Swing Caddie, it would not register most swings. The unit was probably defective e as I read a lot of reviews depicting this. I sent it back and got the SSR and despite it not having as much functionability , I prefer its simplicity.

The angular placement has a direct bearing on the accuracy due to the directional nature of the measurement and something called “cosine error” which simply means that the angle of the sensor is tilted by “theta” degrees and the error in reading is the “cosine” of that angle times the measurement.

ah...a very "tanget"able observation.

    • Patrick Cantlay's strokes gained from 2024: I wonder if he takes more time on approach shots given that was the worst part of his game last season. And then here are his 2023 stats: Much better ball striking season. I wonder if there are any differences in his times between these two seasons. I tend to think he's just slow in general, but it'd be interesting to see his time differences.
    • Not sure, I think players have their own pace. Speith was always slow, regardless if he was in contention or not. Well, more so when he was in contention. It might be a push there on that question.
    • Without knowing the study at all, this could be more of a reflection of who is tournament ready and who isn't. If you have a quick trigger, it could mean your swing is working really well. Fidgeting, lots of rehearsals, maybe means your swing's not functioning as well as you'd like it to and you need more time to feel it all out before you hit your shot.
    • A study done by the European Tour shows spending less time over the ball produces better shots.  This makes sense. I can see where if you are over the ball a long time you lose the ability to make a more athletic swing. There is also the possibility of just overthinking the shot while over the wall as well and not being in the right headspace.
    • I recently picked up a vintage Ping Hoofer Lite carry bag.  I am not sure how old it is but estimate it is probably from around 2012 or so? I cannot figure out how to adjust the straps! I am going to try to attach a picture of the bag and will also describe it below. I cannot figure out how to adjust the straps in a way that makes the bag comfortable to carry.  The bag also seems to want to be more upright/ vertical than how you would normally carry a bag like this. I have tried to search this site and others on the web but almost all info is on the newer ping Hoofer bags which have quite a different design. The bag is pretty minimal in terms of pockets and has no handle on the top.  It has 2 backpack straps that are not connected to each other.  They are connected to the top of the bag and in the middle of the bag above the primary ball/ gear pocket. Any feedback appreciated, thanks for your help!
