Oh, boy, my golf philosophy has gone some changes.

  • Years 1 to 3 - this is my life.   I live to golf, and I play golf to live.
  • Years 3 to 6 - this is a hard life.  @#$%@#$%, what the heck is going on?
  • Years 7 to now - I give up.  I play golf to relax and kill time.  I won't let it stress me.
  • Years 10 and beyond?   Who cares.

Normal people play golf like your 7 year philosophy ... the play golf to relax part that is ...

My philosophy is to continue to improve wherever possible. I’m also helping people design game improvement equipment in my  personal time. I find that challenging and fun as well.

Don't give up on getting better, that will happen. Just keep your goals realistic 😊

Quite true. I am at the years 3-6 stage,  and have hit the inevitable wall. Fortunately I have the attitude to survive

Just keep enjoying the ride 😊

Philosophy One..Your aim is to hit fairways to allow best chance of greens in regulation, and in so doing, score as low a gross score as possible.

And you try to use similar clubs to  greens as Pros would do, because you play from tees that make this possible.

Hopefully you shoot more pars than double bogeys.

This tests your skill.

Philosophy Two...You do not play from tees that allow shots to the greens with similar irons as Pros might use.

You are happy to play woods, hybrids or long irons to many par fours and par 3's.

Your preference is to allow the handicap system to compensate for your shorter driving distance, knowing you are unable to reach most greens in regulation.

You often score more double bogeys than pars.

You prefer  tees that most members use.

Philosophy????

Man, I never thought about philosophy. Isn't that talk on a cereal box. Or was it a smile on a dog? …. I can't remember.

I try to hit as many GIR's as possible. Because I try to shoot as low of a score as I can. I play which ever tee-box everyone else in my group (or tournament) is playing. When I play alone, I will sometimes play the back tees, sometimes the middle tees.... it kind of depends on my mood, my swing that particular day, weather conditions, lots of reasons. Sometime it depends on if the course is crowded (although, if it's crowded I usually end up paired with other, in which case again, I play which ever tees they are playing.)

BTW - as others have said hitting the fairway DOES NOT always give you the best chance for a GIR.

I think you may have wanted to restate your question as which philosophy do you subscribe to?

1 - Play from the back tees no matter what.

2 - Move up a teebox if your distance or skill requires it.

3 - something else.

I think that's what you were going for with your question? But I don't want to put words in your mouth. (or keyboard as the case maybe.)

PS:  I've got better.  I am playing my best golf now at 13 HI.  Perhaps, play golf to relax works.

Exactly! Mainly play to enjoy the game. It’s not an obnoxious puzzle you NEED to solve. It’s what you WANT to do.

Cheers!

As I've aged (66 yrs old)  I find that I care less what tee others are playing and instead try to enjoy the round. I don't play much in competition any longer so I tend to play a combination of senior / forward tees which give me a chance to reach all the holes in regulation assuming I hit decent shots.

Hitting the fairway isn’t always my goal. If the risks are minimal (doable rough, no water or jail trees...) My goal is to hit it as far as possible off the tee. I play the tees for which I’m capable of handling at my best.

Its not that important to me either If the rough is playable. If the rough is heavy and grabby then i dial it down and play for better lies.

It doesn't matter to me if im in the rough from 150 yards and in as long as i have a clear line into the green. On 420+ yard par 4's thats only possible for me by trying to hit driver as far as i can.
