Agree that in general the OP pic indicates maybe your club should be more upright.  But a word of caution.  When I got fit, going from standard to 2˚ upright helped me hit with the toe of the club less angled towards the ground, but not all the way.  And going more and more upright didn't help! It was my swing.  I'd come in toe down from how I set up with basically any reasonable lie angle.

Ok here is what I know about my clubs. Callaway X2 Hot irons

4 Iron 20.5 degree loft 60.5 lie angle

5 iron 23 degree loft 61.25 lie angle

6 iron 26 degree loft 62 lie angle

7 iron 30 degree loft 62.5 lie angle

8 iron 34.5 degree loft 63 lie angle

9 iron 39 degree loft 63.5 lie angle

PW 44 degree loft 64 lie angle

4,5 & 6 iron tend to go right and the lower irons I tend to hit right more often than not. I don't know that much about lie angles except what I have read on the internet. Do these lie angle sound about right? I always hear about degrees hen talking about lie adjustments. Can someone explain it in terms I can understand? Is 60.5 degrees? Considered Flat or Upright?

Thankks

Well there’s an issue I believe. Different manufacturers I believe have different ‘standard’ lie. However I do believe that a very common ‘standard’ lie of a 7i is 62*. If your clubs are based on that standard your 7i is 0.5* upright as yours is 62.5*. I hope I’m not completely wrong here. There are more qualified here then I. But I hope this helps some?

Buckeye Pete, here is what I would suggest for you. Look around and try to find a good club fitter who does a "dynamic" lie fitting. This will cost some money, but is a heck of a lot easier than trying to alter your grip, posture, swing dynamics, or length of your clubs!

A dynamic lie fitting consists of hitting every iron in your bag off a "lie board", with a strip of indicator tape on the sole of each iron. Even with today's tight manufacturing tolerances there are still small differences in lie, and loft, angles between irons in a set. My guess would be that your whole set is pretty much off the same way.

Seems like you were playing pretty well with the irons as they are. A lie fitting, done properly, will only make things better!

@Buckeyebowman I'm going to do some searching around and see if anyone around here does that. I tried at our PGA Superstore but didn't have much luck. They did ask me if my club gad been bent before and I told them no I bought them straight off the shelf at Dick's just really frustrating to line up not knowing which way the ball is going to go lol. Thanks for your help.

If I don't miss my guess, from your handle you might live in Ohio, or did. I live in NE Ohio, and yes, there's a paucity of places to get this kind of thing done! I wish you luck in your search.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
