I'll drink to that. I majored in philosophy at a Jesuit university!

Not sure where you got this from, but the New Testament is as important to Catholicism as any other Christian sect. Every Catholic mass has two readings from the New Testament followed by the priest giving a homily (speech) interpreting the readings and applying them to daily life. "Christianity" vs. Catholicism was founded during the Protestant Reformation when various believers - Martin Luther, John Calvin, Ulrich Zwingli - reinterpreted the Bible and the faith in various ways differing from traditional Catholicism. Just felt the need to mention that.

You yourself have provided two examples of phenomena that could suppose a being of miraculous power created the universe as you know it. Continue to deconstruct the mechanics of both systems asking why they function that way and you will inevitably end up with "because that's just the way it is." You keep asking for proof of biblical parables where there is none. Only fundamentalists have fallen back on believing the miracles of the bible. Modern Christianity since 1900 has eschewed biblical scholarship for a more pantheistic, philosophical notion of God. How are they more miraculous than the digestive system of a cow or the optic nerve of a cat? We await proof of the talking snakes, dead men walking and virgin mothers. [/quote]

What's the worst, most embarrassing shot you've ever seen?
mmoan2 replied to GolfTheMoon's topic in Golf Talk
Easy - I had a friend who let's just say was a little nerdy in high school. However, he caddied at a prestigious country club and got a little bit of a head about his golf game. He invited a friend and I to caddie day where we got to play the course. We were paired up with an elderly club member to complete the foursome. My friend teed off first, and waggled like Ted Knight in Caddyshack. A real ham. He then hit the ball off the toe of the driver directly perpendicular to the target line and whacked the old man in the jaw with the ball, knocking him on the ground. The best part was the kid had no idea where the ball went. He was peering down the fairway with his hand over his eyes asking where it went while the old codger lay on the ground massaging his jaw and my friend and I held each other up from trying not to piss ourselves with laughter.Luckily the guy was fine and we completed 18. -
You meant egg salad sand wedge, right?? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

I know quite a few people who seek enjoyment whether or not it is at the expense of others, and I'm not one to gauge if they are any happier than I am. I'm not going to delve into this thread too much because I've already had quite a few discussions about it (I was a philosophy major in college), but I just wanted to offer that what people define as reason and faith are not so dissimilar. The conclusions that reason has lead to have been collectively viewed as incorrect over and over again throughout time, so it is often nothing more than faith that allows you to settle on any judgment or conclusion you have made. If you study string theory and quantum physics - very recent "scientific" theories supported by mathematical formulas - they ask you to concede that there are multiple universes, 11 dimensions, and that all matter is composed of energy strings several trillion times smaller than the nucleus of an atom. Sorry, but I need a heck of a lot of faith to buy that one. Almost as much as it takes to believe a divine son came down from Heaven to save humanity from its sins. Or that Allah spoke to a man in a cave and told him the words to a new holy book. And so on...

Just broke 80 for the first time in my life. Woo hoo!!! 78 at Encanto in Phoenix.6100 yards. I've vowed to never again play the white tees once I broke 80, so now it's time to play big boy tees. It was really pretty cool the way it happened, too. I sunk a 50 foot downhill putt on 14 to save par , then 2 guys letting me play through on the next hole watched me calmly sink about a 35 footer uphill with 2 feet of break to save par again. On the next hole I sliced my drive like 40 yards right of the fairway. Awful shot. I then hit a 4 iron hook around a cluster of palm trees about 190 yards to the fringe 35 feet from the cup, chipped it to 2 feet, and saved par again. It was probably the best shot I've ever hit. 18 was driver 270 to the middle of the fairway, flighted PW to 25 feet from the cup but dead at it, and a 2 putt. Exactly what I wanted to do. The best part is I didn't feel like I played all that well. I hit two balls OB, banana hooked a 3 wood trying to reach a par 5 in two from 245 yards (needed a AW between two towering trees to save par - 3 putted for bogey), and skulled a few iron shots from the fairway. My putting and short game were excellent, though, and I drove the ball very well. I also hit a 150 yard 8 iron to two feet for an easy birdie, and had some really nice iron shots. 8 GIR, 8 of 14 FIR, and 28 putts.

Ditto - it's just that there's not much movement except for walking and the 2 seconds it takes to swing. Football, baseball, basketball, hockey, tennis, track, etc. generally have constant movement (maybe not so much in baseball). Running, jumping, etc. Golf has none of these things. Suffice to say, though, nutrition and fitness are required to excel at professional golf these days. It's just a different kind of sport.

1/6 of the nearly 7 million residents of the state of Arizona receive "food stamps." Almost twice as many as in 2006. 1/5 of the population is on Medicaid, up over 200k from last year.

Not quite sure what your definitions are. I've been in some more grueling rounds of golf with much more competition than some pickup basketball games.

Feherty tows the line between irreverence and decorum very well. A truly entertaining broadcaster. You can feel his love for the sport in every round he covers, whether or not his one-liners succeed. I enjoy his style very much.

General financial education is missing from most high schools and colleges. Even middle schools. I scored a 4 on the Calculus AP exam in HS but didn't know the first thing about basic financial education. It should be a required course, even a year-long one with some history of finance mixed in - how markets work, how the rich invest, tax structures, etc.

Holy crap I love you! I spent an hour about a month ago in my office mapping a course like this using Google Earth, a legal pad, and a ruler. I got through about 5 holes. What a great tool!

Describe your shot from 20/30/40/50/60 yards out
mmoan2 replied to cutchemist42's topic in Golf Talk
My lob wedge is my favorite club, so I would probably use it for most of these shots. I hit it 1/4 about 30 yards, 1/2 about 50, 3/4 about 75. Depending on the green, however, I would use a SW for tweener yardages (40 and 60) - if there's a back pin location and a flat green, I may opt for the SW, which spins less for me. If I'm from 20 or 30 and it's a long green with a back pin, I'm usually pulling AW or PW. I have a tough time with short pitches out of deep rough from 20-40 yards, so I may opt for SW there if it feels right. -
I asked this exact question about a month ago (I live in AZ - it's around 110 and humid by 2PM here now). Here's what I've done to combat it- I switched to using a glove. My problem was that I never did. My sweaty hands lost control of my gap wedge during a tournament and flung it in a lake after hitting a shot. Decided I needed to change. Found using a glove helpful. Carry a few at all times. Good move. I wear a wristband. Seems to help. Maybe that's mental, though. Wipe your grips often during a round/practice session. Remove your glove and dry your hand often. Wipe your grips down with warm water/soap once in a while at home to remove the oil/grime. Find tackier grips. I love the new Cleveland RTX wedges, but the grips are slick. I'll be replacing them with Winns, which I love on my wedges. TST guys seem to like Pure grips a lot. Baby powder helps, too. When all else fails, bring a small bottle with you. Good luck!

" I want Turbulators to help me drive it long with the PING G30 Driver! ". I predict that the Red (West Coast) Team will win the 2015 Newport Cup by a score of 29 to 25 . The MVP will be @Golfingdad won.

Dude, chill. Ok, you said incite. Maybe you're right. When I interview the nut who did it, I'll let you know. Empirically politicians have some galvanizing force behind what people do, but it is drastically overstated (this is a poli sci masters and career public servant talking) next to underlying psychology and myriad other factors. Until I know more about this isolated incident, I'll dismiss your argument as a causation/correlation fallacy and move on. The guy may have been piss drunk and the first thing he saw after getting tossed from the pub before beating the snot out of someone was a newspaper article where Donald Trump said immigrants suck so he decided to beat down a brown-skinned guy instead of his wife because she wouldn't make him pork and beans the night before. People are going to find a reason to be A-holes no matter what. Trump's rhetoric may be polarizing, but you're the guy who stretched your argument into hyperbole when you said "Let's make America Great - Beat an Immigrant Today," so it's a little disingenuous to call out my Manson reference. BTW, I think Trump's immigration plan sucks as well. And you're right about the facts on immigration reform. All the average Joe knows is that it didn't get done, which Trump says he will change with lots of charisma. He's probably wrong, and his plan sucks, but Joe Public knows more about the results of Big Brother than the ins and outs of immigration reform legislation history.

I swear, if he wins this thing... Let's wait until Sunday.

Where is your proof that Trump willfully led these guys to commit these atrocities? A politician would've distanced him or herself from these comments and acts, but Trump is not wired that way. Are you insinuating that he condones the act? I think he's sticking to his guns that Americans are fed up with hearing about immigration reform for a decade with no plan to fix it.The justification of someone who commited this atrocity is worthless. Charles Manson blamed the Beatles song Helter Skelter for murder. Does that mean Paul McCartney secretly supported a death squad? I do not support Trump for president, and I agree that his manner of speaking is completely unfit for a chief political officer, but I think it's a stretch to take this one comment from a thug and say Trump is inciting crazies. Unless you have other evidence to support that.

Agreed. DNA is there, but upbringing is equally as important in my book. Can't discredit talent either. I also find it interesting that you say you could have made it but claim you don't have enough talent. We're talking going pro here, not being a top 10 pro. For all the Tigers and Phils there's hundreds of pros on the PGA and other tours who just make a living without being world beaters. If you think you had enough talent to make it as a pro, that's a lot of talent in my book. Boxing, though - man, tough sport. I can see why you would've bowed out of it knowing you wouldn't get rich doing it. I'd much rather be a low-paid pro golfer than a boxer. Only one risks being half brain-dead for most of your adult life.

I saw that, and I get it. I just find it weird that my iron distances are pretty identical to his, but I can say with absolute certainty that I hit driver a good 20-30 yards further being conservative. I'm not kidding myself when I say this. It would seem to me that a low HDCPer with pretty long iron distances would be longer. His gaps are pretty consistent as well. Anyway, he'd probably kick my long-hitting, wild swinging butt, so who cares...
