I played the same Taylormade Metalwood Driver for 25 years...bought it back in the 80's. Sometimes I'd go through bouts of ill will with it and leave it at home, using my 3 wood off the tee until I could get the driver back on course. Then about 3 years ago there was an off brand driver laying around our office that had been used in a tv commercial shoot. It sat in a corner of our conference room for several months before I asked about it. The boss said 'take it home' so I did. It's a Matsushita or something like that and much bigger than my old Taylormade but not as big as the newer 460s. I hit the ball straighter with it but not any farther than my old Taylormade metalwood. But I stuck with it and left the Taylormade at home. This year I bought a new Nike VR-S 460 driver. My drives are still straighter than with the old metal driver and I hit more fairways with it but a couple of rounds back I took the old metalwood and the Nike and hit a couple of drives with each. Distance was almost the same. The Nike got the edge on the old driver with about 10 yards more distance. I'm not a long hitter to begin with but directional accuracy with the Nike is much better for me. Bigger sweet spot.

Other than golf I enjoy spending my spare time playing music with a couple of local bands. I also like to take a motorcycle ride every now and then on my Road King. But these last couple of years I find myself riding less and less...mostly because the roads are now packed with drivers who spend more time texting than watching the road and it just seems a lot more dangerous than it use to be.

Nike vr adjustable head question
vo-man replied to MrSandman's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
So my question about the Nike adjustable driver is this: Wouldn't rotating the grip in the hands to open up the club head at address accomplish the same thing as adjusting the club head with the wrench? -
I recently picked up a Vokey 52-08 off Ebay for $29. hard to beat a deal like that.

water, but sometimes a beer at the turnaround helps smooth out the back nine for me.

Before hybrids came along I carried a 24 degree metal Taylormade Tour Cleek. I always thought of it as a 7 wood. In my hands that little club was good for one shot -175 -180 yards with no roll. I've played a 175 yd par 3 at one of our local courses many times that carries over 150 yards of water. That cleek will put the ball up, over the water, and drop it straight down onto the green with maybe one small bounce depending on the dryness of the green. But other than for shots like that I hardly ever used it.

No I don't mark the ball. It's already got a logo and a number on it, which is enough for me.

I play at a steady pace to play a standard timed round with usually one soft practice swing just to make sure I'm choked up on the club correctly I sometimes use a rangefinder on fairways where it's not so easy to determine distance for the approach shot.

if you're gonna play golf in Texas you better get used to 100+ degree days. During summer it's 100 by 10am and doesn't slip into the 90's until long after dark.

How long is your shaft? Putter chat only!!!
vo-man replied to Timothy Voyles's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I just recently bought a #2 Really like it. -
I get up, have a small breakfast, drive to the course, stretch & loosen up, split a small bucket of range balls with my friend, make a few practice putts, and head for tee box #1.

my only advice, from having played guitar since 1968 and currently still playing in two local bands is: Get a Telecaster. If you're interested in more detail, in your budget range, Look around for a made in Mexico Tele. If your hands are small get one with a 7.25" radius maple neck. If your hands are not so small get the 9.5" radius neck.

Hybrid Help...... need opinions
vo-man replied to PhillyMac's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
My introduction to hybrids was just a few months ago when I bought a set of gently used irons that came with a #2 Titleist 585 17 degree Hybrid. It instantly became my favorite club. So I didn't take long to add a 2nd hybrid and got another 585, same graphite shaft, 21 degrees. Those are the only two I carry and I really like them and hit them well. -
I have played a graceful fade for many years and usually calculate my shots on that happening. It's when I do something right and hit it straight that I usually get into trouble on a hole.

How far do you hit your clubs?
vo-man replied to SpringBokVol's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I'm not a long hitter ...wish I could get some of the distances posted here. My 6 iron is my 150 yd club and I work the rest of my irons approx 10 yds up or down from there. Driver - 260 3 wood - 230 17 hybrid - 190 21 hybrid - 170 -
Blood Rock was the opener followed by Sly & the Family Stone and The Beach Boys I think it was 1966...maybe 67.

Never. But I played a tournament a few years ago ...radio & record industry people...and on the first tee the guy from Warner Bros Records, a long haired hippie looking guy in Levi cut offs, rock T-shirt and sandals, who was part of my foursome, popped open his sixth beer before he hit. It was a 7:20am tee time. He had a six pack still connected to the plastic rings and was on Bud #6 before his first shot. Amazingly the guy played outstanding golf from 50 yards in to the pin. But his drives and fairway shots were pretty wild. We made up for his poor long shots though and came in 3rd place. But the drunker he got the better his short game was.

Yes, I would like that for free. XL

lets see ... give up my day job and play golf almost every day, quite often taking home a nice paycheck even though not coming in 1st place, and getting to play some of the best, most famous courses with sponsorships providing my equipment, supplies and clothing....? hmmm...give me a second to think it over. ok...I'm in...do I get two more wishes?

small towel but I do like the Frogger and Ballzee...wonder how I managed not to ever see those while at Golfsmith? I always leave that place when at least one thing less than I needed.

8 iron. For me it's a good chip shot club.
