I actually alternate between my 2-iron and my 5 wood (both 18 degree) depending on the course conditions. generally, if the fairway's are hard and the rough is long, i will put the 5 wood in play to get some roll (as i naturally hit the ball lower with my 5 wood) and it offers me better up-and-out when playing out of the 1st cut. Yet again, I think it boil's down to personal preference, course conditions, skill level and maximum performance. I personally, do not keep a hybrid in my bag anymore, i prefer my 21 degree 3 iron. and i like my 3 and 5 wood combo. Especially on my 2 home courses.

Last (Golf) Thing You Bought?

I had my putter reshafted. (it was so bent > damn tour staff bags > no putter protection) -
Premium Balls by an High Handicapper
marpr replied to eurofighter's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
i agree with most responses thus far > if you can afford to loose them, play them. However, (other than buying some mint condition used premium balls) i would suggest getting some mid-range balls that offer great feel as well as some distance/durability like: Srixons (333, Trispeed, Soft Feel ), Bridgestones (e6+, e5+), Wilson Zip, Titleist NXT's My suggestion > if you like new balls > buy some quality mid-range balls like the ones i've listed. These will keep you occupied until your handicap falls and you can warrant some premiums. happy golfing. -
They recently aerated the greens at one of my home courses and after about 2.5-3 weeks they were rolling very true and after about 4 they were back to normal. NB: The ground staff were heavy-rolling the greens a couple of times during the day to keep them as flat as they could.

haha > some great responses. IMHO > i think she is worlds ahead of Creamer and Gulbis in terms of looks and fashion sense/style (unfortunately, not as good a golfer, thats for sure). dont forget Nikki Garrett > another glamour Australian golfer.

It all depends on three things: - How often someone plays. - How often someone likes changing their clubs (for example, i changed my forged clubs every 2 season, because a > im an equipment nut, and b > i can still get a good trade-in price when i buy my new set) - How well they look after their clubs. My brother has had the same Cobra Tour II blades for almost 10 years!

Best looking irons? Have your say.

I will have to agree with you. The 690's are classic. -
Well done mate! Nothing better than dominating a tough hole.

What club do you use out of the sand?
marpr replied to ScottyCameron's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I have always used that rule and i have found (that for my anyway) that certainly, with More bounce, the club is less likely to get way under the ball. In really hard sand (don't you just hate that?) i will often use my 60-05, and with fluffy sand (given that it isn't buried) i will use my 56-10 SW. Of course, if the ball is plugged (either hard or soft)> i will more often use my 60 to make sure i get right under that ball. each to their own of course. I have also found that varying the ball position in my stance and the level of open club-face helps remarkably. ie > if the ball is in hard sand far away from the bunker > i will put the ball a touch further back in my stance and not have the club face as open. This allows the bounce to be minimized and for me to 'clip' the ball up-and-out with little sand interaction. hope this helps. -
I have played Vokey's (Spin Milled, the last 2 seasons) for the past 6 years and, yes, the razor sharp grooves do wear out after about 3 months of consistent play. However, i found that to my liking as i find that fresh Spin Milled wedges are too grippy. (i've also heard of people, i think Erik does it too, who used a fine grain sand paper to immediately try to take-the-edge off brand new Spin Milled to try and down-grade the bite) On another not, my three vokey's (48, 56 and 60) needed replacing. I headed to my local pro shop and actually saw a wedge set of Mizuno Mp T raw haze (2007 models) for a great deal. The local pro, who has been using Mizuno wedges for a couple of seasons, said to me, if i dont prefer the mizuno wedges over the titleist, he will swap them over for me (minus the cost of the mizuno). I thought, why not, if it works out, i will have saved almost HALF the money. I used them while i was in japan for work (3 rounds) > the result > AMAZING!! They are a touch lighter than my Vokey's but after a round, i got used to it. I have found that with my wedge play match these clubs perfectly and that the 60 degree, has just as much rip/stop as the vokey. Also, i have found the feel in the Mizuno's amazing. has anyone else made the conversion from Vokey to Mizuno? After playing with Vokey's for so long > they have become a staple in my bag for almost 7 years! It would be great to hear if anyone else has made the switch (wedges only)..

Should I keep my Callaways or switch to Titleist
marpr replied to Gone.Golfing's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
after 2 months you already want to change? wait i say. your current clubs are great too. -
i10's no doubt.

I mark my ball with either an Australia 10 cent piece, a one Euro coin or (as i have been recently been losing the above mentioned coins) a magnetic hat ball marker i bought.

Good call. i totally agree!

What is the most forgiving ‘players’ iron?
marpr replied to Smilesy's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
i think the i10's, i5's or even the ap1s. my iron's aren't as forgiving as the 1's. my old cobra carbon cb's were very forgiving! -
I have a straight orange line halfway around the ball.
-
definately get any set fitted.

Yeah i wouldn't be too put-off by it. re: Hitting off mats > its doesn't allow you to create an ideal divot. Synthetic grass does not allow your irons to interact with it, the way irons are created/intended > with real turf.
-
I personally have experience this even after some great rounds. Unlike the pro's, after we hit say 100+ balls we get arm/leg/body fatigue swing will drastically change your swing. Also, if you were hitting iron's at the range off the synthetic, it can be one of the worst things you can do.
-
I think that whole 'parallel' alignment ideal is a simple (and easy to say) as the old 'keep your head down' ideal. if you view a cross section of all the pro's (ie the best putters in the world) alignment > you would be very suprised at the variation. i would stick with what stance best works for you to keep that club face square at impact (what we all crave to perfect ). i personally am a bit open. i feel that it allows my swing/top body to be a lot more stable throughout the putting swing. just my opinion

What make of glove do you wear...
marpr replied to PutterHead's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
FootJoy. I used to use all leather titleist. but now prefer all leather FJ. -
believe it or not it was a 60................................. on a short par 60 course about 5-7 years ago when i was 18 and playing in a Junior comp. i remember it so very well. first hole 220m par 3!! i hit a 5! then i got 2 consecutive birdies after that and parred the remaining 15 holes. even though it was an easy course. i was young and i still remember that round as being the best i've played!

congratulations. its great that your so pumped to getback out there. i think the best thing you can do is keep going and try not to stop going to the lessons. after you starting to get more confident and your scores start dropping (after 6 months or so), start to back them off: once a week for 3 mths, once a fortnight for 3 mths, once a month for 3 mths, once every six months. great news!

I would have what Laura Davies did. Have several holes all leading to a huge, multi-holed green! amazing!

Leaving my Beginner set of Irons behind.....
marpr replied to CoolBreeze20's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
i have to agree with most of the comments here. if you shooting 7, you should be looking at forgiving player's irons. not oversized clubs. but if you at 7-index with graphite slazenger's > the world is your oyster. ping i5's!!!
