Golfing in Singapore - any recommendations?

Raffles (Nice post - all good advice for sure. I completely agree about the mass transit system - I will never get a taxi for my trips - so much easier to use the rail system. though if he finds a course farther north he might not have a choice.....) -
Golfing in Singapore - any recommendations?

It's goofy expensive. I went to watch the LPGA on the Sentosa course a couple years ago (Michelle Wie's last win). I met a member and chatted for some time. For a guest to play was even over 500-600 dollars.....If I recall correctly. The course was gorgeous, but I didn't think it looked like an incredible playing challenge - and these Sentosa courses are supposed to be the best of the best. Get some friends to schedule a day trip across the bridge and into Malaysia for the courses there. Singapore isn't super big, so driving anywhere isn't an issue, nor is going up to Malaysia... That was my plan for my next trip - but cancelled at this moment due to the Corona Virus worries..... -
Cart path only sucks when in a cart. It's not so much a wast of time rather it's just terribly inefficient.
-
The only stupid thing here is the other guy is fuming, what a stupid waste of energy. If he had your attitude, it wouldn't be a big deal. Just politely let Fred know you're moving ahead and everybody wins. This thing where some golfers sit and fume and don't say anything is really one of the most comical things in the game. Play nice people, it's more fun that way. that's pretty much the same message - just plain english and not so wordy - I bet a dollar that the actual content was closer to yours...("my boy" and the little speech is pretty condescending for sure, I doubt anyone really THAT cheeky in real life) General comment about assuming pace of play is better for low handicaps - I call bullshit. One can roughly infer that lower handicap indicates one plays more and has a better feel for what's typical or expected vs strangers to the sport. But - still - bullshit. We can all site enough examples to the contrary that it's hardly even a rough rule....

this ^. slow play is only a problem if you are slowing up others. it's a courtesy issue. If it was clear ahead, there's no reason to stick with Fred. I'm sure he's used to it. there is neither a social, or moral obligation to stick with him, nor is there any compelling business reason for the course, or anything else. If it's wide open in front and back of the group, then this has morphed into a thread "why don't people play like I think they should"......

Did you mention to them they were dickheads? that usually helps
-
cart path only - ....... unless the terrain is difficult in general, I find walking might be a bit faster than cart since you can go straight to your ball on each shot... This was a clear case of Fred is slow - any other defects don't really matter in the conversation....he's slow....that's it.....he plays slow.

what? I won't stand for that hidden message at all.. how dare you sir! how dare you..... (😋)

Nope - Dave is one of the more tactful and informative members on this site. just talking in general

I think the more a person understand the rules, the more they make sense in those terms. But I wouldn't give people a hard time when they question them. The people that question them are most like those that are in the process of learning them - exactly the people you want to encourage. They will come around as they get deeper into it. (in general). thanks for the book referral

Sure, everything game professes a 'theme', but if they threw something completely inconsistent and random in there....it would be in there and, by definition, part of the game. Consistency with the theme is good. But it's not necessary. That book actually sounds interesting - I must be very bored (working from home waiting for the electrical inspector to show up and tell me what I did wrong with my basement wiring).
-
There you go - I think that statement really nicely sums up your position. I'l acknowledge your feeling here and understand where you are coming from. However, just because it "feels" like cheating to you, it's not a justification for changing rules. Everybody has a rule they "feel" is bad, but rules are subjective and someone else might "feel" exactly the opposite. Rules are pretty random - what's 'fair', is just that they are defined (not inferred), and everyone follows the same rules for those rounds that pit us against each other or our own performance. Best to avoid subjectivity. A discussion is interesting, but only up to the point where we try to convert others with a different view on it. Then it goes from being a discussion, to just repetition.

you two, I believe, nailed it. He's talking about very exclusive clubs with very low membership density. Then you just act like the owner and play whenever and however you wish. It's a bit clueless for anything other than the most excluding of privates. Pretty much wallowing is what 'ordinary' people consider the worst stereotype of golf. Or he's in a typical private and wishes it had fewer members so he can have an elite experience instead of what his club offers....

I actually caught that and thought it was a good post.... - I forgot the smiley face so my reply might have come across poorly. (I was referring to an earlier post in a wry fashion, not so much poking at you. my bad)

the true "spirit of the game"

see.. there's you problem right there........ When you got a lot of commitments..........then it's great to escape to your hobby and let it suck up your personal time so you don't have to be drained of all life and hope and joy by those other things..... 😄 (Smiley face added for the grim overly serious types that'll take this as a serious post - they know who they are.......or maybe they don't)

I see zero ways that this type of generalized comment would be definable or enforcible, or conducted in ways that wouldn't cause fights and arguments and bad assumptions being debated endlessly. I seems the 'spirit of the game' is defined already in areas where it could be defined. I like G-Dad's comment - Rules aren't fair on unfair, they only need to be consistent and defined clearly. (which, ironically, is the only thing I personally consider 'fair')

and yet..... the "putt for dough" crowd might have a few that will want to point at this to try and make hay.... Hey - If I'm having an outstanding day on any aspect of my game, I do expect better scores vs days I don't....and hot putting day is a treat. (Probably set up by me having a good day on approach shots......)

As a solo, I walk on all the time. Despite that, I like tee times because it helps me just walk on. I can go to the website and see how busy it is by looking at their schedule. I find a club that's not busy and I go and walk on. If my schedule is tighter, I can make a tee time just to be safe. Best of both worlds. It's an easy fix for Charlie too. Just call and say you're a single and want to just play - they can tell you if they can fit you in or not. The other thing is: if you have tee times, then members damn well need to show up on time or lose their slot.... I suspect the real gripe is clubs that will book 2 or 3, but then close that time out instead of topping it off with walk ons....3-somes buy 3 slots, 2-somes buy 2 slots - not the full 4......any starter that ASKS a 3-some if they 'mind' adding a 4th is just NOT understanding his job or how it should work. Don't ask, tell. It not their business.

In all fairness, ChiChi did NOT duff that shot - he hit the glass and frame setup square on... So perhaps any shot you hit perfectly, and then it gets a horrible bounce. Or the great shot that goes right where it's supposed to, and then you get there and the ball can't be found...

For a game that's supposed to be relaxing, it seems we make threads and threads about pet peeves and crotchety oldsters finding excuses to get perturbed.
-
Never a full list - I just haven't gotten that far east yet...or north. there's a lot, those were just ones I'd gotten to. You can't really swing a dead cat over there and not hit a bunch of courses.

I just want to say. My random, dataless, ill formed opinion did well. much like my dart throwing ability...

Minnetonka? They added a lot of bays. hopefully can hit in them soon. Glad you got a 3w that works. I use mine every round.

I can't really add to this. (These are my distances - driver, 3w, 3h). I find my 3w to be one that I'm happy to pull for off the tee or off the deck. I like hitting that club a LOT. I also have another hybrid for 210 or so. Those gaps work nice and still leaves room for a tight spread on my irons and especially the wedges
