Why Aren’t More People Copying Moe Norman's Swing?
GolfLug replied to Msokol13's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Question if anybody wants to indulge. From what little I know, breaking down the nuts and bolts MN's strength was hitting it straight (without curve) with an unusual repeatability, with repeatability being the more significant 'talent'. So really, was his repeatability somewhat or significantly more facilitated by his 'simple' mechanics or due to his unique personality? Also, honestly I am having a hard time seeing with his move he got home with short/mid irons in regulation on tour length holes with tour level regularity even back then. If not, how did he score? -
Yes, some would have planes, cars, electricity... etc., banned if they could. 2/10 is an opinion, 5/10 is a debate, 7/10 is a bill, 8+/10 is a law. Bottom line, enough people annoyed/offended/dead, facts or no facts, the matter is ban fodder. BTW, personally I would never vote (if I had one) against cigars altogether. Just in closed spaces.

+1. Well said. Couldn't agree more. BTW, for discussion's sake how about drinking laws in Japan. My colleague who was carting me around town during my visit there last year wouldn't drink a single beer! Can result in definite jail time and up to job loss. 'Designated driver' is a legit career. That, is truly OTT, but I guess they are trying really hard to keep up their population.

Glad you read the break right. BTW, you had me at '8 iron for a 2nd into a 542 yard hole'. Jeez!

I hovered on this website for 2 years. Read everything my free hours allowed me. Finally joined. Just signed up for Evolvr. I guess IMHO in this time and day you have the advantage of truly understanding the methodology/knowledge/temperament and ensure they have some demonstrated proficiency before you entrust somebody with your swing. Any serious golfer should. I guess I could have gone to one or two local pros (very reputable) but really I feel I have to know them to understand where they are coming from. I also think I have to have enormous respect for them to have trust. I feel that now here on this site. But like I said, took a considerable time. So really, where are you in your preparations? I hope you even vaguely fit the bill. Of course there is also the Sunday afternoon school teacher version which doesn't take much. I know you 'just want to know the rules' and sure, it is not life or death but in the least, I hope you appreciate the responsibility involved.

Rory McIlroy is quitzies (breaks engagement) with Caroline Wozniacki....
GolfLug replied to Valleygolfer's topic in Tour Talk
Wishing this young powerhouse a great year! I think it says a lot about wives/husbands/GFs/BFs of high profile athletes who really assume a selfless support role in their spouse's demanding careers. Not sure Ms. Woz would be up to it being a professional athlete herself. Good on them both for recognizing it and saving greater heartbreak further down the line. Takes maturity and courage. -
Quickie Pitching Video - Golf Pitch Shot Technique
GolfLug replied to iacas's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Just passing along a thank you to Iacas for this instructional piece. Got up and down 4/8 yesterday. 2 were still on green within appx. 20 feet, just didn't get up and down. Screwed up 2. Couldn't execute. But a world of difference. Must admit, paint brush over ball is a better image than hinge/hold which feels more contrived. Thanks again.- 776 replies

+1. I have a pin-lock laser and love it. Only thing I miss is having to look up the greens 'map' etc., to see how much distance off the green edges to the pin in each side to estimate the better miss. Most courses don't even have it anyway. I think the quickie GPS watch which tells this would be helpful addition.

How should seniors cope with loss of distance?
GolfLug replied to HighlandLaird's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I will be 40 in a few months but last year I have had the privilege of playing with two retired military officers in their late 80s a few times. One of them had onset fibromyalgia. Whatever you do, you MUST be gentle to your joints, they said. Simply put you must exert only as much muscular force that your skeletal system can support and sustain. I guess true for any age, but more so at later years for longevity. Sorry, but if you don't reign your 'power' you will pay for it. As lots of comments on this post have already mentioned distance loss is inevitable. I am saying you must actually reduce it DELIBERATELY for longevity. At 72, I think LOTS of golf left! -
He means start bent, stay bent. Importantly, same amount of bent.

I'd Be Scratch with a Better Mental Game
GolfLug replied to iacas's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Hi ITR, all of what you said absolutely true for training the very young who need a positive spin on a difficult climb. For a more mature group, the flip side of delusional understanding of one's ability is full awareness of short-comings. Blame large gaps on a 'mental' game or something vague for which they would not be too hard pressed to held accountable for. People do it all the time with eyes wide open. I think there is a very good chance this person mentioned in OP is not delusional AT ALL. The OP is a an instructor to this person and should rightfully call him out (as he did). Non instructors/non involved parties should probably simply find the amusement in it at best I guess. Or torch him on blogs like this. -

Very well put. Good reminder of how golf is a microcosm of life n general. -
I'd Be Scratch with a Better Mental Game
GolfLug replied to iacas's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Sure. And I think I would get comfortable eventually. But if I ever ran into the good fortune of playing a round with you, at least for the first few holes, I would expect you to be highly impressed with my skill of finding the right end of the club to hold EVERY SINGLE TIME. Beyond that, you must not hold any violations, moving or otherwise, against me. -

GolfLug replied to iacas's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Other than occasional smile from lady serendipity, a supposedly great mental game wouldn't stand a chance of compensating for a bad move through the ball. Reverse not true. Good physics (read 'swing') can overcome just about anything. I think for 99% golfers mental game is nothing more than controlling nervousness, which keeps you from keeping your senses engaged. Beyond that, I think this 'stupid monkey' stuff they talk about is about all the mental management I care for. -

I would need a better 'mental game' to play without shaking in front of an instructor of this pedigree. Seriously. -
The Dan Plan - 10,000 Hours to Become a Pro Golfer (Dan McLaughlin)
GolfLug replied to Jonnydanger81's topic in Golf Talk
Not sure this would apply but eg. Phil Mickleson shot 75, 63 resp. two consecutive days last week same course. I realize HC variance comes from a larger statistical data group. But still this a top professional. HC/anti-HC difference of 8-9 for an amateur not so huge IMHO. -
Didn't post this properly. Meant to reply to @FooFader

Thanks for the link. Really liked the summary wall at the end. I must admit though, turning through with a leaning shaft WITHOUT executing the hit instinct is easier said than done, and I am sure it is not just me. I think it takes a certain frame of mind to do this with any confidence/competence DURING the round. Anyway, off topic. Sorry.

Here's a 'formula'. You have to have at least two strengths to shoot in mid-low 80s, e.g. driving + mid-irons or short irons + putting or even chipping + putting etc. Find a good combo and groove the crap out of it. Forget or just 'manage' the rest of it. Now from 80s to high seventies; well I am not sure if the formula is sufficient but I think you need a third strength or you have to really start blunting down weaknesses. I have a comfortable tee ball + good hybrid game. Irons are luke warm or cold and am a horrible chipper/wedger (I texas wedge a lot and actually just bought the infamous chipper to 'manage' short game). As long as I am plying 6300 yards max. low-mid 80s work out ok once I get into season.

I will bitesince this is just for kicks. Probably in the mid 60s if I quit counting after the 7th hole. :~(. On a very slightly serious note: Assuming pro tees (you mentioned Sunday) Max - 144. Average 4 shots to get on the green and average 4 putts. I won't hit my usual 3-4 OBs which I do on tighter courses. Min - 126. Avg. 3.5 to get on greens, avg. 3.5 putts. I don't have any profound insights to back up the numbers.
