Kirkland (Costco) Premium Golf Ball
dkolo replied to Brad W's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Yeah, as a seasoned Costco shopper, I've found that if there's something you might be interested in, you grab it and decide later if you want to keep it or not. Their inventory is so unpredictable. I've gone back two or three days later for things like grass seed, shirts, or Christmas decorations only to be told they sold out or cycled it out of the store, and I was left kicking myself. Same thing happened with the Callaway 300 rangefinder I bought from them over Christmas. I had a feeling it was going to be a shortlived deal, so I snatched it up, and it disappeared from their site before they even shipped it out to me. You can only find it from other retailers for $100 more now. -
2016 G/Fore Gallivanter IV Golf Shoes
dkolo replied to Bjmay9913's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Maybe you're talking about a different model, but it seems like their website has all of those shoes in stock in those sizes https://www.gfore.com/men-shop/gallivanter-shoes/golf-shoes/longwing-gallivanter.html -
Does Anyone Still Wear Traditional Golf Shoes?
dkolo replied to 1badbadger's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Yeah they're really comfortable and they have some colorways that aren't completely garish, but I didn't want a shoe with only 6 spikes. But I'm with you, golf is a sport, so a more athletic type of shoe makes more sense to me. -
It occurs to me: I've participated in a few Member Reviews (Tee Claw most recently), so I'd love the achievement!

The lady and I are going on a quick weekend getaway to Amelia Island, Florida next week, staying at the Omni Resort. We are looking to play some golf (the primary purpose of the trip!), and I was hoping to solicit some feedback and recommendations. All of the Omni courses *seem* like they are tight based on online reviews (though I don't know if that's tight for a resort course or legitimately a narrow bunch of courses), and I'd generally prefer something wider if possible considering how I'm driving it right now, but more than anything, we are looking for a relatively nice course to have fun at without breaking the bank. Currently most likely to play the Oak Marsh course because she vetoed the Ocean Links as being too short. There's apparently a third Omni course (Long Point) that's harder to get a tee time on so I'm mostly ignoring it, but do people have any experience with these courses or any in the area that would be worthwhile to check out? We'll have a car, so we aren't tied to the resort (I half-heartedly pushed for making a trek to Sawgrass, but that was also vetoed on about half a dozen grounds, haha). Thanks!

I'm going to wind up gifting a set of these to my girlfriend, who loves to hit her 3W and 5W on the range (as in, 3/4 of her bucket with those), and the ranges never have the right size tee for her. Bingo, bango, problem solved!

If the weather is nuts or I packed a 6-pack with me, I might exclude the round from my stats afterwards because it's not useful data, but otherwise I'm tagging every shot as best as I can. I use the phone app, not the actual device.

Does Anyone Still Wear Traditional Golf Shoes?

I grew up on sneakers and all my memories of shoes like this were from having to dress up for school. I try to get away with wearing my Nike Pegasus on any occasion I can in daily life because I find them so damn comfortable. For golf, I just bought the Adidas Tour 360 Boosts last week to replace my Adidas Tour 360 ATVs, and I think they look awesome. A mix of classic style by having a full leather upper, but definitely athletic looking. I wouldn't wear something crazy athletic and off the wall like the Foot Joy Freestyle, but I would err in that direction over a more classic shoe like you pictured. But wear whatever you love, man. I prep out with polos and Vineyard Vines everything, so I don't have a leg to stand on in terms of fashion sense. -

Testing or buying new golf clubs
dkolo replied to jmanbooyaa's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Or try the Tee Claw! These were well-reviewed by me and other TST testers, and they were a TST sponsor at one point, I believe -
They were running a sale down to $10 through their site a little while ago, but they're still cheaper than they were at launch, I believe

What new gadget are you guys getting for this year?
dkolo replied to loverofgolf's topic in Golf Talk
I always thought of them as a commodity. Like, "OK, now I have a rangefinder." There's a lot of ways for them to upsell with bells and whistles, but with pinseeker pretty standard and most of them pretty good and durable, it doesn't seem like the kind of thing to need much upgrading. Same with my GPS, the Garmin G3. It spits out a number and gives me a picture of the hole. Doesn't need upgrading! -

As with a lot of things in golf, buying used isn't a bad idea here. There's a lot of preowned rangefinders on Ebay in great shape for around $100. -

The Callaway 300 series rangefinder in a giftset from Costco. It doesn't appear to be available any longer from them. I had a feeling it'd be a fleeting deal, which is why I jumped on it; I can't find the laser by itself anywhere for less than $250. Callaway is selling the same giftset on its own site for $279. -
Setting the Rake in the Bunker Before Shot, Allowed?
dkolo replied to jandrewsgolf's topic in Rules of Golf
Exactly right. I've had strangers try to correct me and warn me about it (in casual rounds where we just happen to be grouped together, no less) a bunch of times. It's crazy how many golfers just keep repeating bad information over and over. -
How Many Courses will Tiger Design?
dkolo replied to jandrewsgolf's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
I bet he'll start out strong, but wind up designing about two or three fewer than Jack Nicklaus. -
I just bought a pair of Tour 360 Boost shoes for myself for $103 and for my girlfriend for $89 on Amazon. They still haven't been replaced as Taylormade / Adidas's flagship model, as best as I can tell. That's a damn good price for high end golf shoes. Taylormade / Adidas is still doing a number on itself with its pricing / inventory management. It would be weird to see Nike replace Adidas as the apparel side of Taylormade's brand. Both brands tend to have the same athletic appeal, but I don't know if Nike buying a brand from their biggest competitor fits with Nike's challenger brand mentality or reputation. Then again, it would make sense in light of Jason Day's recent Nike / Taylormade split contract, but not with letting Rory and Tiger go off and signing conflicting contracts with Callaway and Bridgestone.

I just bought a Callaway 300 rangefinder that I haven't had a chance to play with yet. I've been using GPS and Game Golf Live over the past 4 years, but I like the idea of either it complementing GPS or replacing it. I think I'm at the point that I want the flexibility and extra info the laser affords. And for $150 in a gift set with a sleeve of Chrome Softs and an extra battery, the price was right. I used it yesterday for the first time at an unfamiliar driving range and it was very helpful. Finding that I was 148 yards to one of the 100 yard signs saved a lot of frustration. -
Eh, they're probably right. But, just like the dog surfing, I still have a lot of fun regardless.

Found a heated driving range here in WI (Vitense Golf Range) that was so dang well-heated that the girlfriend was hitting from the mat barefoot, and I put my winter hat back on just to shield my head from the intensity of the heat. They run a $14 special of a bucket that normally costs $10, paired with a hot dog, fries, and a beer (Lagunitas!). And there was a flatscreen with the NFL game (Packers, duh) at every stall. If this is what golf is like in the mid-west, I can get used to this! That said, before we went out to the range, we managed to book a weekend trip down to Florida for warm-weather golf in two weeks. Having a girlfriend who loves golf and has a half million airline points from work travel definitely qualifies as a keeper!

As long as you mean a box of refurb ProV1s, haha. Even the practice area at Kapalua only had regular range balls.

I recently regripped all of my clubs, as well as my brother who keeps his clubs at my place, and a few hand me downs for my kid sister (fringe benefit of Golfsmith going out of business was its steep discounts on grips). I put Golf Pride MultiCompounds on about 30 clubs. I did go out of my way to put the MCC Plus 4s on my wedges. I liked the softness and lack of taper for choking down for touch shots.

Generally, yes, stick to recycled vs. refinished. You don't know what's under the new paint job and also the new paint job tends to fade fast. For the price, you're better off playing a cheaper ball, like one of the bulk Taylormade Lethals or a Costco Callaway Hex Soft (or a Kirkland ball if you can get your hands on a bunch). A higher handicapper like myself can benefit more from the mentality of treating your ball as important to your success more than from any benefits the ball will actually give. In other words, taking more care in your preparation and striving for consistency helps get you into a better mindframe for performing well. I played ProV1s for a while when I was striping it well, but I've recently been playing fine with non-descript Nike PD Softs. But I always prepare my game balls before the round with my markings and practice some touch shots to have a feel for how those particular balls will react. Getting into the mindframe of accounting for your ball's performance will have good carryover benefits for you game. But my belief is that you'll probably be OK regardless of what ball you play, until you get to at least a single digit handicap.
