  2. Oh well. If threads like this prove anything to me it's that people accept stuff that reinforces their beliefs and reject stuff that doesn't.
  3. As far as I can see this is the actual site for research Harvard has done into firearms: http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/hicrc/firearms-research/ Their "overall" cliff notes kind of page has the following bullets: 1. The United States has a very high rate of firearm death 2. The risks of a gun in the home typically far outweigh the benefits 3. More guns, more violent death. 4. Better mental health treatment may help but effective legislation is crucial to reduce gun violence. In fact they even have a "bad science" page that rebuts the paper that saevel25 references, so good work in finding a supposed "Harvard Law Study" that actual Harvard researchers say is terrible. http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/hicrc/bad-science-3/
  4. Here's some more stuff I dug up about that paper saevel25 referenced. http://www.harvard-jlpp.com/about/ So not a peer reviewed journal. Gary Mauser the Canadian author of that paper is: The president of a Vancouver gun club Senior Fellow with the Fraser Institute (Canada's largest right wing think tank) http://www.the-peak.ca/1998/11/gun-clubs-refuse-to-leave-burnaby-mountain/ Do an image search for Gary Mauser and here's what you get lol: LOL. "findings done in a Harvard Law Study"
  5. I haven't been following this thread but I was curious about this so I looked it up and did some googling. This is not a "Harvard Law Study". It is a paper written by two authors not associated with Harvard (they are actually associated with two pro-gun right wing think tanks) that for some reason Harvard had the poor judgement to publish in their "Journal of Law & Public Policy". Here's a response to some of the issues found in that paper: http://www.ericgarland.co/2013/09/26/academic-support-american-gun-lobby/ If I can dredge up the will I'll try to see if I can find an actual academic paper on the relationship between gun ownership and gun related deaths.
  6. I find the whole "ya but the US has inner-city issues" argument to be a sign of gun advocates grasping at straws. As if cities all around the world don't have huge numbers of unemployed, frustrated, and disenfranchised people. American gun attitudes are a belief system so it is like arguing with religious people. It doesn't change how they "feel".
  7. Key #1 should be called "Rotate About the Spine" maybe? This year I finally clued into what that feels like. I don't know why it took me so long.
  8. On a more recreational note - recently I was paired with a guy who hit a horrific shot OB off the tee. When I asked him if he was going to take a mulligan he said: "No I never take mulligans. I would just hit exactly the same shot again". That seemed like a really smart answer to me. If I had a nickel for every mulligan I've seen that was exactly the same as the first shot.
  9. I live in Victoria a couple of hundred kilometers north of Oregon. The local Seattle TV news ran a story about about how an Oregon gun range was seeing a lot of extra action after the shooting and showed an older lady sitting in a pretend bus shooting out of the window. I laughed pretty hard. "I'm practicing protecting myself by shooting out of a bus window" Americans must know that from the outside their guns laws and attitudes look ridiculous but few Americans can see it for themselves. Arguments like "... then only the criminals will have guns" just show that most Americans really don't consider what other countries do.
  10. This song has been stuck in my head all day.
  11. I stunk up the joint today. I had my first triple bogey in about two months. I was playing with a guy who liked to talk about swing mechanics and for some reason that really threw me off - lol.
  12. 6 iron (28 degrees) My new Adams iron set came with a 25* 5 iron and a 23* hybrid. The hybrid is a lot easier to hit consistently and the gapping between the 6 iron and the hybrid works out to be about 15 yards for me (175, 190).
  13. I thought this was a pretty decent article about the cards: http://www.vox.com/2015/9/29/9415325/emv-credit-debit We've been using the chip cards in Canada for 2 or 3 years. I'm surprised the USA is behind the times on this.
  14. I've always thought that a draw went further but I guess that has been proven by Trackman to not be true. http://www.andrewricegolf.com/andrew-rice-golf/2012/05/trackman-exposes-golf-myths
  15. I didn't care to begin with and now that I've learned that there are 2 golf HOFs I really don't care.
  16. I hate that it is supposed to update itself automatically and yet I often get a popup message in the right corner saying something like "updates failed - click here to do the update manually"
  17. Bump and run is a fun shot and it is a handy skill to have if you need to hit under some trees onto the green.
  18. The guy who usually holds your left foot down is nice and comfortable.
  19. My fellow atheists might get a chuckle out of these satire sites if you haven't already seen them: - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYxIsFJNY06h7K7XxK1zDEA (Christians Against Dinosaurs youtube) - http://www.landoverbaptist.net/ I came across the Landover Baptist Church when I was trying to figure out if "Christians Against Dinosaurs" site was satire or not. It turns out some of the administrators for the Landover Baptist Church are also responsible for CAD.
  20. I had a random great round (for me). I was 3 over after 17 but then managed to double bogey the last hole. I've been experimenting with some pre-shot routine waggles to get myself to hold the club lightly make a loose swing and it seems to be working. Focusing on having a loose and smooth full swing seems to bleed over into my short game resulting in smooth putts and pitches.
  21. There's a 180 yard par 3 on the course I usually play that has trouble on both side and there is always a group or more wait on that hole (the worst was 4 group wait a couple of weeks ago). When there gets to be more than a one group wait the course should post a marshal at the green who can tell the golfers exactly where they sprayed their balls so they don't spend precious time looking for lost balls. The marshals on this course are half useless.
  22. Quote: Dean Snell, senior director of R&D;, golf balls for TaylorMade, thinks Thomas' figures are about right. "When the golf ball gets colder, it can lose a few miles per hour in ball speed, which can mean distance loss due to speed," said Snell. "[The] optimum temperature range is 70 to 90 degrees. At 40-degree temps the ball can slow down and be shorter by 5 to 10 yards. But the balls are not 40 degrees when played. It takes a while for them to completely get to 40." http://www.golfdigest.com/story/cold-facts-about-golf-balls http://probablegolfinstruction.com/golf-ball-temperature.htm
