If she knows nothing about the game of golf, then I dont see any problems showing her some basic principles like set up and grip and posture. She probably would feel uncomfortable going to a stranger and maybe a bit embarassed if she really doesnt know how to play. She probably would rather hang out with you because obviously she likes you and maybe doesnt really see it as formal instruction, just helping a friend have fun and do something together, maybe golf is more of a social activity to her and she just wants to get good enough to have fun and enjoy the game. I bet formal instruction is a bit intimidating to true beginner.

Eliminate those 8's on par4's, 5's and 6's on par 3's, i always seem to have a few of those in a round, duffed shots, shots ob, in a hazard etc. Keeping the ball in play on every shot goes a long way to breaking 100.

Well i guess i havent seen it for that price yet and I guess you have a point there, havent really been looking for the best price.

With the cost, its a moot point for me and probably many on here. I just cant plop down that kind of cash for brand new technology that probably wont help someone with my skill level a noticeable amount, if at all. I played last weekend 2 drivers in my bag and their combined cost was under $50 new and I can hit both of them decent, just cant make a decision on which one to use so Ive left both of them in the bag.

im sure he'll play at the us open too, he won with a broken leg before and he loves pebble beach just as much as st andrews. He may be at the stage in his career where he only plays the majors and a few other tournaments a year, such as the memorial, arnold palmer classic, his tournament and match play and rhyder and presidents cup. Most golfers wish they could only play 8-10 events a year but most wouldnt be able to keep their card or make very much money, tiger has earned that luxury though his past excellent play. He never played in that many events anyway but he always managed to win more than anyone else. Although lately just winning again anywhere is greatly in doubt, especially with either finding a new swing coach or going it alone for a while.

I tried one out at a local Dicks Sporting Goods but just cant afford $400 for a new driver, it might have been the Supertri, dont remember for sure but it felt good. Im working currently on hitting both of my cheapo drivers better and am making good progress, had a good range session today, not sure which one I like better, still undecided but at least now its because im hitting both of them pretty good instead of hitting both of them poorly.

right now Im back to 12(5w gone) though im going to put another driver in the bag and decide which one i want to use, still not sure, ive tried so many this year its unreal(5) the one club thats baffling me to this point. I sold my burner a week after I got it, couldnt hit it very well, back to the bloc 455 but maybe looking to trade a friend for his driver that I have used and like, a couple years old ben hogan driver but ive hit it better than anything else lately.

What was your worst score through nine holes as a beginning golfer?
Greg replied to TheFisherman's topic in Golf Talk
A few times ive done so bad that I quit keeping score, probably somewhere in the 60's, a good score for me now is keeping it in the 40's for 9. When i first started playing, I always scrambled with friends so i dont really know how bad I was doing then, just did that to play faster and keep moving and I remember not using very many of my shots back then, so who knows how bad i was then but within a few months I improved a lot. I played a lot more often then it seemed, didnt work as much overtime and played probably 4 times a week, now I go to the range a couple times during the week and play on the weekends mostly. -
Most ranges are just happy people come there and spend 3-4 dollars to hit a basket of rocks into a seldom mowed cow pasture, this guy doesnt get it. Id tell him to go find something to do, clean the bathrooms or something and keep doing what i was doing and tell my friend that he must not have taken his medication today, im not sure he's supposed to come out here unsupervised either.

I only carry my clubs from the car to the range, though i usually ride in a cart most of the time. I put enough stress on my back at work that I dont need to carry a bag around and risk hurting my back that way, forget it. My bag is pretty heavy, maybe if I had a smaller lighter bag more designed for carrying it would be easier. But you have to put it down every time you hit a shot, pick it up and so on. I'm sure if I did walk and carry my bag, I'd be asking for back problems, it gets sore sometimes now. If you like doing it, go ahead, I just wont be joining you. The only time I ever walk is at my local par 3 course but I use a cart there, you still get exercise if thats what you're after, im not, golf is for fun for me, I dont rely on it for fitness, I do that away from the course.

The hammer guy says to do that in his most recent infomercial for the hammer x, though I think 45 deg is a bit much(for both feet) but whos to argue with a guy who can get banned from drving ranges for hitting the ball too far and hitting it over mountains and rivers. POWWWWWWW!!!!!! Though seriously I have heard that it helps you make a better hip turn especially if you lack some flexibility, which I could use more of.

Shooting at the middle of the green?
Greg replied to ronaldkuntoro's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Center of the green? Heck im happy to get it close to the green on approach. The only time Ill aim for the pin is on chip shots if Ive missed the green and trying to get up and down to save par. Im happy to hit any part of the green on my approach shots and be putting for birdie, even its from 60 ft away, though most of the greens are small enough at the courses i play at that if you hit the green you're never more than maybe 35-40 ft from the hole. -
Well if you look at my signature, ive added a new driver, just bought it used at a local store, hoping this will help, have only hit it so far at the store on their simulator, going to test it out this weekend, got it for $65 in good shape, not a bad deal i dont think, new one is $150. Got a new putter too, really inexpensive but going to see how that works too.

I could maybe understand if they were on the same team helping out a teammate here it doesnt make sense. It would be like a player on tour missing a putt to let someone else make a cut or keep their card or make the top 25 in the money list on the Nationwide Tour and get their card. Someone deliberately making their score worse to help someone else. I dont even want my friends to let up on me if theyre beating me and thats just for fun, someone else pushing you will make you better, that goes for just about everything in life. Granted they're just kids and he did it so his buddy could go, maybe thats how we should just look at it and not read so much into it.

If Doran had been good enough he would have earned the spot, life doesnt give things away. Whybark shouldnt have let him win, now its all about him and how he "let" Doran win like he's the little retarded kid who couldnt do it on his own and actually made the story more about himself losing than Doran winning, like he wants some kind of reward for disgracing the game. Even in childrens sports like little league baseball they never let the other team win except on tv. He should have played the hole out and made him earn it, no real competitor will let him win next time out. Its not the kid is missing an arm or leg, he just wasnt good enough to make it without someone else letting him win. Sorry kid, you just werent good enough, thats how sports go sometime.

ill experiment with moving the ball around in my stance with driver, I usually have it pretty far forward, maybe ive been going at it all wrong, might explain why i sometimes(visible with range balls) hit the ball with the bottom of the club face. Maybe im hitting the ball too late in the swing and thats why im hitting down on it and just pounding the ball into the ground even if it feels like I made a good swing and probably trying to swing too hard too.
-
It may be more my swing than anything but i can barely get it in the air, its like the clubface has no life in it, im making what i think are decent swings and the ball is going nowhere, im hitting my hybrids farther. Oh ill hit a few good ones just frustrating the hell out of me. Ive also got another driver ive been using as well, a pinemeadow 455 cc bloc driver and not much better than that. And both are brand new, though i paid about $50 total for both of them, guess you get what you pay for. Ill take a look at that Cobra LV4 driver, i need all the forgiveness i can get. Im not brand biased, i just want the one thats the most forgiving and easiest to hit. My swing speed was measured at 92 mph with driver on their monitor at Dick's so I should be consistently hitting probably 240-250 with solid contact im thinking and might get one like that maybe one of of 10 with any of the current drivers i have. I know the Burner drivers fall into forgiving and easy to hit category, maybe the Cobra does as well. Just have to try them out this week when i get a chance to go to my local store.

I think im finally going to help my driver swing by finally buying a good driver, ive been playing cheap drivers since ive started and probably going to get a new Taylormade Burner 10.5 deg driver, reg flex. Last Sunday, i was at Dicks Sporting Goods after I friend and I played 9(i played terrible he played worse than he normally does as well but still better than me) because he wanted to look at some putters, may get a new putter as well. He liked one of the the Odyssey 2 ball putters and i was looking at some of the less expensive and found the maxfli revolution alignment 4 putter and liked it a lot, felt good and was only $40, kicking myself for not buying it but Ill be back again this weekend and may pick it up then. But we both for kicks hit one of the new Taylormade Supertri drivers, felt sweet but I just cant afford $400 for a driver but $130 for a new Burner sounds good to me. I think it may be the shaft as much as anything as my cheap drivers im sure have poorly designed and matched shafts and crappy titanium in the face too, just not getting the pop i should with what i have as I have correctly one fatal flaw in my swing that he pointed out, happy left feet and am hitting my irons and hy brids and woods much better but not driver. I think one of them even is made of forged aluminum which explains why it sounds like a softball bat. At this point im blaming the equipment, ive seen others at the range getting nice ball flights with swings that look worse than mine so im going to finally get a good one. Sorry to get a bit off subject but im hoping this will help

Who in the world hits the driver 200 times at the range at one time, practice another club once in a while. And im no expert on long term exposure to noise and hearing loss but a golf swing is so fast that unless you literally have several balls teed up and hit them almost simultaneously like ive seen on both Haney Project shows, your ears would recover and i doubt you could ever blame hearing loss on hitting a loud driver. I work in a factory and I dont know the sound level in there but im sure being in there 8-10 or more hours a day for 5 or more days a week for the past 10+ years has done more damage to my hearing than hitting a driver ever would but I cant really wear wear earplugs in there either because I need to hear whats going on around me over the machines to stay safe and not get ran over. If you're whining about your driver being too loud maybe you need to take up a safer hobby like knitting or collecting stamps.

ive left range balls behind before as a few times ive showed up late and didnt have time to hit them all, i fully expect someone else to hit them if i dont come back or if there is someone else there, ill just dump them in their basket and leave.

To hybrid or not to hybrid....
Greg replied to misty_mountainhop's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Hybrids are great(i have 3, 3,4,and 5) for a high handicapper such as myself, I couldnt imagine hitting a 3 or 4 iron even from a perfect lie and making a good shot. Hybrids make it easier to get the ball in the air. To this day, my best shot ever has been with my 26 deg(5h). hit it to 3 feet on a 177 yard par 3 last year. I hit my 20 deg(3h) a lot, Ill use it on par 5's if i dont have a perfect lie because its easier to hit than my 3 wood and I dont sacrifice a lot of distance. The only thing about hybrids is that its harder to hit those low punch shots like to get under a tree limb because of the higher ball flight. Like many have said, go to a local store and try them all out and see what you like the best. -
I work out some with weights and do some jogging, but its not really golf related, just to keep myself in reasonably good shape and if I dont do it I just dont feel right. Im not super buff or anything but just trying to maintain some level of fitness, my job is sometimes pretty physically demanding so being out of shape would make it very difficult. I'm 5'11", about 195 stronger than average at least, i just wish i could translate all of my strength to a good swing and hit it farther. As far as worrying about bulking up, unless you have great genetics I doubt most people have that problem, ive been lifting and working out for about 15 years though i was a pretty skinny kid back then, I dont exactly look like Mr Olympia now and most people wont.
-
I have a cheap putter that came with a kmart golf set that i use all the time, I think people overpay for any putter. I would put exactly the same if I had a scotty cameron or my $20 putter, might be slightly better but I doubt it would make much difference. Im to the point now that I dont care what name it says on it, its whether or not it helps me play better or not.

I guess i had never really looked at those, wasnt aware of that section. Mostly I just look at all the current comments on the forums but Ill check it out.
