Favorite club in your bag and dream club
mrobbie replied to FlopShotArtist's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Favourite club (at the moment)... is my TM Superquad driver as I am hitting is well and when I step onto the tee I am confident of where it is going and how far it is going. Dream club... would be a 15 degree Superquad! But as they don't do them, I'd love to get a brand new original style Taylormade V-Steel 15 degrees with and stick a RE-AX stiff shaft into it. Simple pleasures. -
I'm in this exact boat at the moment so good to see the discussion points... I am shopping for a 3 wood and am toying with replacing the 5 wood also with a hybrid (17/18/19 deg) I've hit a couple of hybrids recently, and love the height you get with distance, that then just drops onto a green and stops. I hit my 5 wood well (around the 210/220 yard distance - 240 swinging silly hard), and consistently, but its harder to stop on a green unless hitting into a wind.

HX Hot Bite - the only ball I have ever WANTED to lose! These scuff up so bad - stick a 3/4 wedge onto one and its ripped to shreds. My last round I just went nuts with them - taking on stupid water carries and if it didn't make it, no loss. It would have become a never used practice ball after 3 holes anyway. Will NEVER buy these again. Will be going back to NXT Tours, but someone suggested the new PTS Carry/Roll as the greens here in Dubai are soft so don't need the same amount of spin. They are cheaper, and more durable for sure. Also, less $$$. Just another 6 or so Callaways to send to a watery grave.
-
I hate the grip on my Superquad, and am looking forward to replacing it - there is just something not right with it IMHO. Will either be sticking on a GP Tour Velvet (same as irons) or multi-compound in the next week or 2. Which ever one I go with, it will go on the 3 & 5 woods at the same time also
-
On a side note, the difference in the 'ideal' flight between a 7.5 deg 975J and a 9.5 deg 907D2 will be huge. Even if you compared the 975J v 907D2, both with 9.5 deg, I reckon the 907 will fly higher. The modern clubs have a different flight. Before, you may have landed at 230 yds and rolled to 270. Now you'll carry to 260 and roll to 280 - it often looks like a balloon. This may be the issue, rather than the shaft itself?
-
as above, if you needed custom sizes for your irons, I'd be replicating this on the rest of your clubs (unless your driver hands are a different size to your iron hands?) Stock grips = forget it. The F on the grip means nothing. Much cheaper just going out to get some other grips fitted. My Superquad has the stock grip, but the grip and perhaps shaft are not aligned properly to the head (if the grip was 'centered' the face would be well open). I don't even like the stock grip anyway, so its getting replaced along with the 5 wood next week. Golf Pride Velvet (same as irons) or Multicompound?!?!?
-
I experienced the same not that long ago - tried the setting up at the toe which helped mask the issue, but wanted to find the real cause... Tirned out I was swinning VERY steep. By swinging more around the body I was on a better, more consistent plane which solved it.

Considering Taylor Made driver, help me out here
mrobbie replied to domino's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I was not a fan of the Burner - too light and long for my liking. There is very little between the R7 460 and the Superquad. Superquad has a heavier shaft (65g v 60g) and the additional weights giving more flexibility to set the club up the way you want (if you did actually change the weights after initially setting them up!) If you can get the R7 460 for that price, I'd go for it over the Superquad. -
Jimmy - try out the Taylormade Superquad if you get a chance. I found it to be more controllable than the Burner was. Nevada Bobs have them on-line for about 220 quid, but suggest trying one out first (most NB stores have a golf simulator if you are struggling)

My TM R7 460 did it after 2 weeks - was told it was epoxy, and applying a heat gun to the heade melts it and it fixes itself in place again. Told them after only 2 weeks that was BS so they were going to send to TM for repair/replacement. This wouldn't fit with timescales as I was moving home, so the shop exchanged it for something else. I reckon you give them another go - you have a warranty remember, so keep swapping if it keeps happening. The good thing is that if it happens after Callaway have no more, they will most likely give you a new club... From my experience working in golf retail, they have the best customer service going.

The Jumeirah Golf Estates courses sound superb. Home to the European PGA I think. The end of season big money (European?) tour event is to be played on one of the courses from what I hear. I saw houses at the Golf Estates for sale... tripple garage; 2 for your cars, and 1 for the included golf buggy. Nice. Not heard much on golf city yet Just got my membership at Emirates, and the wife apparently wants me to get value out of it so is going to kick me to the course each night for 9 holes. Cannot wait! Would recommend Dubai - its expensive, stressfull and fast paced, but my wife and I really enjoy being here.

shopping around for some different drivers....
mrobbie replied to Dub's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I was so close to buying the G10 before I stumbled accross the Superquad discounted. G10 feels easy to hit, but I feel more connected to the Superquad. The Callaway FT-5 is also nice, but I dismissed it as it was a lot more $$ than either the G10 or the Superquad. G10 probably ticks the boxes if you like it. -
I'm living in Dubai at the moment, and the future of golf here looks amazing! There are about 9 new courses planned to open in the next few years. Cannot wait for them, as at the moment, getting a round booked is near impossible (I tried booking on either course at Emirates 40 days in advance and NO times available for the entire weekend) Summer is coming though, and as temps rise, prices fall. Looking at a summer membership at Emirates or Four Seasons. Four Seasons includes lessons, but only mid-week golf, while Emirates is golf only but 7 days a week... Similar prices. Decisions decisions! have not been to the Els club - I got the details of membership via e-mail and almost choked. Very expensive, but from what I understand, you can then sell your membership place for a % of the market value back to the club.

Have a look for the R7 460 - this is available at some retailers still, for about $190 IIRC. Can't remember where I saw it, but the sites I normally frequent are the usual suspects - rockbottomgolf, tgw, discountgolf... have a look about and you'l find it. Also, you could try ebay. This is similar to the R7 draw being a 460cc head, but the R7 460 has the advantage of weight settings; essentially neutral or draw. For the time being, set it to draw (same as the R7 draw) and when you fix the slice, change the weights to neutral. IMHO, if you his a slice now, the R7 draw may give you a straighter shot. Cure your slice and you'll have a nice draw. Not saying a hook, more a draw which will be nice.
-
From trying the FT-I, I'd call it a 'safe' club. Easy to hit & to hit straight. I went with the Superquad, as it was cheaper, hits longer and is still an accurate club. When I cure my slice, I can take it off the draw weighting and set it to neutral to make it workable. The Superquad is part of my long range plan I'm definitely hitting more fairways with it versus my 905R, and a good 15+ yards longer too.

What do you guys mean by this 150 yard swing? Are you meaning a half swing, or a full swing just done very slowly & relaxed?

Porsche Golf Trolley ..there is no substitute
mrobbie replied to Maverick's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Handy that it fits in the front compartment of a 911/Boxster/Cayman, but I'd sooner rent a trolley at a club than fork out that much $$ for one! -
What grips do you use on your irons?
mrobbie replied to JYB's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Golf Pride Tour Velvet on the irons & wedges. Stock as per Titleist and very happy with them. 3 wood (and old Wilson I had lying about) was recently re-gripped with the same. 5 wood is needing re-gripped. I think I will try the Golf Pride multi-compound to see how it goes as I hear a lot of good things about it -
I keep hunting for one of these on ebay - my Warbird 5 wood is immense, so to get a 3 or 3+ would be ideal!

Yes, I like my putter. But its not my favourite club. I can play well with it, but I'd rather hit a flush iron or driver down the middle than hit a 20 foot putt leaving me a 1 foot tap in. If I could sing a 20 foot every time, I'd be over the moon. Getting close keeps me happy enough. I'll not change this putter in a long time; sentimental value for how I got it etc, so "whether I like it or not, it stays" (read this as "whether I can putt or not, it stays"). It's maybe psychological. Yes, the putter is the money club, and when it works, it works and can make a round. But its not my favourite club.

try moving the ball forward as you have suggested - helped me a lot. Swing is 1 factor that can cause shots to go waywards. Ball placement is another, and I find that tee too high = slice and too low = hook

taylormade tp red/black
mrobbie replied to GOLFSALOT00's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
I've not bought any yet, but I think once I get through the remaining NXT Tours I will be getting some... I found a TP red that looked like it had been hit once. Surprisingly, the ball lasted me 2.5 rounds (before it fell in a watery grave!) The NXT Tour has a better flight off the driver, and more distance. The TP red had great feel off irons, very similar to the ProV1 The ProV1 has better feel round the greens. I'd say the TP red was a good step up from the NXT, but to me, the ProV1 is still a better ball, althogh the price reflects this. When I get back to UK golf, where there is less water to lose balls in, I'll be back onto the ProV1 ball I would imagine, but its great to see Taylor Made producing a high quality ball that I see will take a % of the market from Titleist I am sure. -
I recall reading an article about Tiger Woods. Apparently all his clubs are his favourites. If one wasn't, it wouldn't be in his bag! For me however... Driver, cos its new and I am once again driving long and accurate. Or, my 5 wood as it is a great 'safe' club on a tight fairway. Or my 56 wedge is a sure thing from 115 yards in. Definitely not the 3 or 4 irons as I generally have a hard time with these. I think it is from many years of playing relatively short courses, where driver and 6 iron is about the most I am facing (eg, this would get me approx 420 yards) I guess after typing that, the 3 & 4 irons need more work at the range to get comfortable with them again. I don't have a particular favourite, but I certainly have clubs I am more comfortable with.

Does your driver match your other woods/hybrids?
mrobbie replied to mrobbie's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Well I got a Superquad, but the TM Burner just feels too light with the stock shaft. I hit a Cleveland Hi Bore 3 wood and it felt fantastic. Have seen these at a good price, so toying with a 3+ & 5 or a 3+ & a hybrid. There is definitely a 3 wood of some sort going into the bag in the next month. My 5 wood works well, which is why I think I will stick with the old faithful rather than replacing it with a different 5 wood or hybrid... Sensibility and my wallet are telling me to just go with a 3 wood. -
