Recent Club Fitting Experience

12 posts in this topic

Last week I posted about my interest in the Titleist AP2's. Well today I went to a club fitter who started me out by focusing on fitting me for the correct shaft, then I hit several manufacturers clubs before dialing into the proper set. I hit the following clubs... Titleist AP2, 710's (they had the Dynamic Gold S300) Mizuno MP-53 Mizuno MP-59 Ping S56's Callaway RAZRX Forged Irons To my surprise, the AP2's were nowhere near my favorite clubs based on feel, and smash factor. Which I was surprised as I currently play 762's with S300 shafts. So I thought going into this fitting I would gravitate towards the AP2's. They were a huge disappointment coming from a guy who's carried my 762's for nearly a decade in my bag. and I love the look of the AP2's. The Callaway's were surprisingly very solid... But they were not as 'finished' looking as the Mizuno's which I'll get to in a moment. The Pings were too large. They just didn't set up nicely to my eye, and they felt like I was hitting my old Zings in my garage. Not a fan. So now to the Mizuno's. First let me say this was the first time I have ever hit a Mizuno iron. And I really didn't think I would be this excited about my finding... But their MP-53, MP-59's were amazing. The ball felt like it was exploding off the face. As if I was puring it swing after swing. My favorite shaft was the KBS C-taper Stiff shaft weighing in at 120g. After looking at the two Mizuno's I decided to go with the MP-59's given they're 2012 clubs with the Titanium insert for improved feel. I'd say being stoked about getting these baby's next week is the understatement of the year. I can't wait to get out on the course with this new set.

Yeah, those Mizuno's look pretty cool. IMO they have a larger head or at least the same as the S56's.

I tried various sets of muscle-back clubs recently and the MP59's came out above everything except for the Benross VX2012''s which felt great, hit great but are Benross and therefore not something I'd even think about buying (they were recommended by the store to try)

Everything about those Mizzies was perfect; they looked clean and neat at address, the balance of the club felt lovely, the feeling of the ball off the face way amazing, the dispersion was much MUCH tighter than my current cavity backed VMS irons and I was able to work the ball well; something I've never done before.

The sole thing stopping me from buying them is that I'm trialing a bespoke, fully custom-made club at the moment made by my club's professional club fitter which has been created for my exact stats. I want to see how I get on with that first.

Mini, I've never heard of the Benross club mfg. But maybe that's a European brand? I'm here in Socal.

Yes, it is "Euro."

Yep, Euro brand and historically release cheap and nasty clubs in my experience, hence my avoiding them even if I have one club I hit well at a range one time :-)

I was like this when I first hit a Mizuno iron, MP52s and it blew me away.

I play the MP53s now with the KBS FST Tour shaft and loved them so much I got the MP-T11 with the KBS HiRev in

I just picked up my MP59's yesterday and went to the range today. They are such sweet sticks. If anyone it's looking at new irons, I highly recommend them!

I went with the KBS C-Taper stiff, and black Winn Lite grips. I'm hitting the ball further and more pure than my DCI 762's with Dynamic Gold S300.

    • Free towel while you play at a public course?
Mt. Washington course puts a towel to use in the carts at times. I don't think it is all the time, just rainy days.

You're not giving us much to go on. What is your current iron set? As for the Nike VR Pro Combo, I'll let others comment on that. As for FT irons... I to follow Callaway and know a bit about their classic irons, but I really don't know anyone who used the FTs. Came out in 2008 along with XForged, X20 Tour and X20. (See note on i-brids) FT had the same shaft length for comparable # irons as the X-family irons of 2008. Stock shafts were the FT Iron Graphite (L, R, S at about 75 grams) and the NS.Pro 100, a 110-gram steel Uniflex. I hit all the X-clubs in spring 2009, but not the FTs. Scattered reviews on the FTs promoted idea that the club got the ball up high without loss of distance. The wide sole looked similar to the circa 2007 Big Bertha irons. As @newtogolf said, you won't know much until you try the two irons models out. I'm worried you'll be wasting time and $$ if you go buy-and-try with assorted iron models. Why not get fitted with newer used offerings?
    • My Swing (cutchemist42)
Well figured with 1 month under the belt in the golf season I would post an updated video. One thing that sucked is during this session I forgot my shoes, and I lose confidence in my swing wearing slippery shoes. My driver hits have been better since last year, with my big misses being big massive pulls. These pulls dont appear to have much of a fade or draw in them. Upon watching the vdeio, I kinda thought my wrist was hinging more than I see in the video.   Heres my 6i swing. i would say my miss is just the occasional fat shot, maybe 1 out of 15 hits. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHrjhEdGyZI

Towels in carts, quite a few. BTW, I hope people aren't taking those "free" towels home.  That's not the intent!

And man, am I looking forward to it! Love me an Oakmont bloodbath! That course can beat people up. The only thing that could screw things up is heavy rain. I was there in '73 when Johnny Miller won with a final round 63. It rained just about all night every night of the championship, but it didn't rain during the day. Just a solid, low overcast. I don't think Oakmont saw a single ray of sunshine the whole tournament! That's because he didn't have to, so he didn't. Which is called smart golf. And there are holes at Oakmont where you don't have to hit driver, and in fact, had better not! One of the things that makes me chuckle is when I hear the mantra that Spieth is "short". I watched him hit an 8 iron 190 today! I saw him hit drivers that carried 290+. He may not be the longest, but he is by no means short! Watching the back 9 at Dean & Deluca made me wonder what this kid might be capable of if he could get his tee game in order. He's an absolute magician around the green! However it goes, the next two weeks are going to be a whole lot of fun!
