I got my r5 TP on ebay for $175, brand new. the ebay searches always brought up like 20 of the same club at the same price, so i eventually broke down and got one. either i'll outhit the other people i'm with, or i'll slice it across 3 fairways.

If you have a strait drive, then I wouldn't go with anything that says draw. Seems to me that if you are driving strait you have most of the battle won.

With all the new spaceship drivers that have come out in 2007 you can get the model they are replacing on closeout for $150-$200. There are a lot of choices. Callaway X460, Callaway FT-3, Cleveland HiBore (Original), Cleveland Launcher Ti & Comp, Cobra Speed, Nike Sasquatch, Taylor Made R7, Titleist 905R, and I'm sure there are a bunch more. IMO there's a great market for the $200 driver.

My opinion and ranking after having tried a few drivers of models that are considered older or out of date now but can be had for $200 or less are as follows:

T1) Taylormade R580 XD
Best feel/sound and 2nd only to Cleveland in forgiveness and distance.

T1) Cleveland Launcher 460
Most forgiving with the best distance.

2) Taylormade R5 Neutral
Feel/sound quite different than the R580. Forgiveness/distance was not quite as good as the two above it.

3) Titleist 905R
For some reason could not hit the sweet spot as regularly with this club? therefore feel/distance suffered.

4) Callaway Big Bertha 454
I did not like the shaft in this club. feel was not impressive and i didn't like the high pitched ting on impact.
Note: All clubs were tested with factory stiff shafts.

So overall it was a toss up between the R580 XD and Launcher. I picked up the R580XD as it was the best value club out there at the time (year and a half ago). Been very happy with it ever since.

  • 3 weeks later...
I would recommend the Tour Edge Bazooka Geomax. I bought one this spring for $200 brand new. I couldn't be happier with it. The best part is that it has a LIFETIME Warranty on the shaft and head.

I currently own the r5 type N and love it. This is the second year I have been playing it. I personally think it is the best driver for the money. It has a wonderful feel and miss hits still go far.

I recently went to a demo days in the area and tried out the latest and greatest. I found nothing that I like better than what I am currently hitting. The only thing I may be upgrading soon on it is the shaft.

This is truly a great club for the price.

I just picked up a Cobra F Speed 10.5 Reg last week. They had it marked down to $199.00 and he sold it to me for $150.00. This is last years F Speed, not the Speed LD. I LOVE it!
I've spent most of my life golfing - the rest I've just wasted.

    • Day 120 - Played 18; much better than yesterday. Miss right now is off the heel of the club, so I need to sort that out.
    • Today we played Pease Golf Course in Portsmouth, NH. Course was in great shape but my game didn't show up. I will say I pitched and chipped fairly well but almost everything else was very hit or miss. Cost myself a lot hitting an in play drive with pulling my approach shots maybe 85% of the time. Finally figured out I had been swaying most of the round. Only took me until 13 to figure it out. Used what felt like a much more centered turn and the ballstriking improved. 18 tomorrow using a 2 man scramble format. Just looking to contribute. Been a blast though.
    • Day 22: Hit balls with 7-iron using mevo+ to track dispersion. Was out for a long time after work; 86 balls but the first 50+ were 50% swings focusing on top of backswing feel and then just hitting the ball as a psychic reward. Finished with 20 balls close to full speed. Pretty happy with dispersion and also no horrendous misses. I’m chunking my priority piece out into two separate feels, first and more important is the position/balance at top of backswing which is what I was working on. Once I have that engrained I’ll move to transition part.
    • FWIW I never really had issues with the previous generation of Snells. But… I'm not sure I played them a ton, either.
    • I know Dean Snell designed the original Pro V along with a couple of other brands tour balls.  How exactly does the Snell ball have problems.  Did he change something in the design or is a manufacturing error since he cannot afford the unlimited R&D budgets of the big manufacturers to iron out flaws
