Do you think it's time for a new set of irons?

I puchased a set of Dunlop Tour Black CB irons a year ago to play more golf with. I have been playing with this set for 2 years now and I am starting to see my scores hover in the mid-80s. My driving is consistant and my putting is good (cosidering my putts are on average 10-25' away.) I feel like my iron play from 50+ yards out is now my weak spot. I have a very hard time hitting the ball into a scoring position on the green. I feel like I am swinging the clubs well and don't mis-hit too often. I just can't seem to get the ball close to the pin with my current irons. With these CB irons, it feels like every swing produces solid contact, but I don't get the result on the other end. So my question is, yes lower end CB clubs like mine are forgiving and easy to hit, but is it a common probelm that it is difficult to be accurate with them when my game starts improving? I am trying to make it through the rest of our golf season with this club set until I can go for a proper fitting and upgrade. Would I want to look at Max Game-Improvement irons? I currently have my eyes on Mizuno MP-59's.

Well if you have the money then go for it, but if there is a possibility that your swing could actually be the issue.  I, personally, would check that out first; regardless you may have a club that isn't as forgiving as you really need.  I'm not really sure about the dunlop's, but they shouldn't be too horrible... Then again who knows.

I would say that you at least give a cheaper product a chance first before diving into the MP'59's. I'm a fan of company's like golfworks since they gave me a decent chance to swing a forged club and get really comfortable with them; minus the price.  This way I can confidently buy a really nice brand name set that I want - I'm a sucker for Miura clubs, just the name reminds me of the Kill Bill Hattori Hanzo of golf clubs - and I don't have to get stuck with an expensive set that doesn't actually work for me.

I have yet to buy my "custom Miura's" since there is no point with the stage that my swing is at currently.  Once I get the swing down, then the club will have the honor of being swung...until then my mind see's it as a honor to swing the club, which is not a good mindset.

my question for you is have you lost confidence in the clubs your playing? if so maybe yes you should go demo multiple sets of irons to see what you like. without demo time with a iron you may get to the course or range with a club you bought and feel the same way you do about your Dunlop's. Also my question is do you hit a lot of shots fat or thin do you pull the ball or slice. these answers will let you know if its the club or the swing. this game is based on confidence if you lose it its hard to regain. by fixing your swing if that's the problem you might like your clubs again. and save a hand full of money. if you seek a pro and find out your swing is good then yes get clubs. or if you have lost confidence and can afford a new set of sticks demo them and purchase the clubs you like the most and feel the best with. but always remember this you can not buy a better game. you can buy lessons and clubs the game part is on you to work on. hope this helps

No, I don't think it's harder to be accurate with them. With a good swing and proper mechanics you can get close with any club. I don't think that if you switched to another club you'll suddenly start hitting more accurately unless the clubs you switch to are fitted for you and your old ones are considerably ill-fit to you.

aren't most beginner clubs a bit offset? I found that with some big cbs I was hitting too much draw. I lost confidence. Picked up some 755s (a nice forged cavity back with some forgiveness) I like them a lot. thinking im about ready to move onto some nike combos. Not because I don't like the 755s but because Im impatient, bad with money, and I want what I want damnit.

probably not a bad idea the combos are not bad. you still get help were you need it and the scoring irons play better. just prepare yourself mentally so if you have a bad round you dont lose confidence. Good luck im sure you will love them. i did then i bought my x forged set and will never look back

      Yeah, that. It stands out… because it's so rare. And interest in Caitlin Clark will likely result in a very small bump to the WNBA or something… and then it will go back down to very low viewership numbers. Like it's always had. A small portion, yep. It doesn't help that she lost, either. Girls often don't even want to watch women playing sports. My daughter golfs… I watch more LPGA Tour golf than she does, and it's not even close. I watch more LPGA Tour golf than PGA Tour golf, even. She watches very little of either. It's just the way it is. Yes, it's a bit of a vicious cycle, but… how do you break it? If you invest a ton of money into broadcasting an LPGA Tour event, the same coverage you'd spend on a men's event… you'll lose a ton of money. It'd take decades to build up the interest. Even with interest in the PGA Tour declining.

      Of course there's not a simple or knowable answer here. But the whole Caitlin Clark phenomenon is a nice example IMO. Suddenly there was wall to wall media coverage and national attention and... the women's tournament got similar ratings to the men's and much higher ratings than the men in the final four. With every indication that there will be some portion of the uptick that remains going forward. And there's the whole element that Sue Bird brought up. That basketball needed a pretty enough white superstar guard. One who looks like the "cute little white girls" that describes most of the soccer USWNT that's been able to achieve much higher popularity than any version of women's basketball, which is dominated by black players and none of any race who could be described as little... I do think women's sports are in a good place to start taking off more though. It's really only in the coming 5-10 years that the majority of girls will start to come of age with post Title IX grandmothers (as in their grandmothers were allowed to be serious athletes). I don't follow men's or women's basketball much, but in golf for sure the women's tour has gotten much deeper over the past 20 years and only looks to keep going in that direction. I've heard the same about women's basketball. And the patriarchal attitudes that socialized girls out of sports and everyone out of women's sports fandom aren't gone but have def diminished.
