Aloha from Oahu!

3 posts in this topic

Aloha! I am an active duty E-6 stationed at Peal Harbor, Hawaii! I am brand new to golf and just took my first lesson (with at least 5 more scheduled). I picked up golf about 2 months ago and finally decided it was going to be "my game". I am completely awful at the game but still seem to want to play again every time I leave the range or par 3 course... Right now I have set my 6 month goals to play an actual 18 hole course under 90 strokes, make a birdie, drive the ball 250 yds and attempt to establish a handicap. Dont know if these are realistic but hey... there they are.

I have some thrift shop clubs ( Big Bertha Steelhead (10* loft) Driver / Titleist DCI Oversize + irons 5-PW / Nike 7 wood / Callaway 9 wood / Tommy Armour Evo Putter *this ones new*) an old bag and some of those "recycled" balls (Noodle/Callaway/Nike/Bridgestone mostly). Minus the putter ($35) everything was picked up at goodwill or salvation army for under $50 total.

I would love to hear any advice you might have for beginner golfers as well as thoughts on when I should invest in some newer clubs and what clubs you recommend!

My advice to take a lesson.  My second advice is to spend more time on the practice range grooving your swing than playing the game.

If I had to start all over again, that is what I would do.

    • Controlled wedge to green
Hitting low penetrating wedges which spin to the left when hitting the green is what I was looking for and so often see on the PGA tour. The teaching video shows what is needed and I was able to go out and use the method getting the results I wanted almost immediately..not perfect but at least seeing it works. Then having BH hit that left spinning shot with what I see as using the same method made it all the more convincing.
    • Longest Drive of 2015
I am not a longhitter, pleased with every drive that hits the fairway and goes 220y. But I had my moments of joy this year. On a par4 at my homecourse I hit it 300y. The funny thing is, there were no helping circumstances. Only 70y to the green, so I hit it in the greenside bunker  and made bogey. best one was in Italy, 310y and winning the longest drive prize that day. Next day I even hit 10y further, but longest drive was on an other hole that day.
    • Poor Treatment of Muslim Passengers
I don't mind the added attention, what I mind is being subjugated to humiliation after I have passed all the necessary security measures and I'm about to board my plane, or even worst if I am already on the plane (and not because of my actions, but because I have an accent or the beard that I have) I think there has been enough speaking out against the innocent slaughter.  What does this have anything to do with not being treated like a human who passed all security checks? The spoiler is all OT Spoiler  Also, Just in case you don't read the news, both the US and Isreal kill innocent people, the difference is that it's state sanctioned and done with 5,000 LB bombs so it doesn't count..  Here are a couple of snippets for you.       Understood, but eventually if we keep this up there will be concentration camps set up to keep us all Muslims away from everyone so that people can feel safe.
    • How To Improve My Handicap in 21 Days...
Hi all, I´m still training to play better and improve my skills. This weekend, I play 2 rounds, and my iron ball striking was not bad, but the driver is still not consistent, and the putt must be better. I am not bad at short game and putt, but it´s definitely an area where you can cut a lot of strokes...  I started really well, with a bogey and 2 pars, but I was too relaxed and little by little the course was pushing me out... I think that I should learn to have more craftiness, I mean I see so many people with a worse ball striking than mine, and yet the have lower handicaps... Today I going to practise long game, full swing, and a lot of aproach and putt. Will tell you my impressions morrow. Thanks!
    • How to hit Sand/Bunker Shots
Regarding the ball position, I think there may be a little something going on with the camera angle or he was hitting a long bunker shot. Guy taking the video is his instructor, Scott Hamilton. Not much at impact and those wrists angles are coming out quickly.
