You probably are a better putter than you know.

Just got back from playing a private resort course with the best greens by far I've ever played. The ball ran absolutely true on every green, speed was totally consistent, and the breaks were readable, what a treat.

This is what the pros get almost every week and why when they don't get it they complain so much! Now I know the secret and will be spoiled forever.

I HATE OUR GREENS HERE.

Our indoor golf facility (Parmaster) has a simulated-grass, almost football-field size putting area. I have no idea what kind of turf they use, but this stuff is AWESOME. Apparently it's the closest thing you can buy without putting on real PGA greens.

That being said, it's not hard to get used to whatever you play on, and I'd actually say that some of the bent greens I've played on before are more difficult than the dried-up crab-grass I'm used to.

I put excellent: I've rarely play a course with better quality greens as far as the grass and the roll at Woodley Lakes. However, they don't really undulate that much, so I'm at a total loss when I'm on undulating greens. One of many things to get to one of these days.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

The greens at Hudson Hills and Garrison Golf Club are very good.

Split Rock/Pelham can be really good, too, especially after an MGA, event.

Sprain Lake absolutely stink. I don't think I've ever seen anyone mow or roll the greens. Just awful.

I've been fortunate to play at a few private clubs. All I can say is "Wow." The fairways were in better shape than some of the greens I've played on. Just a great experience.

I love our greens. They are very smooth and true. They run very, very fast. On tournament days and in high season, they will run at 13-13.5 feet on the Stimpmeter. On SLOW days, they run around 12 feet.

They will either make you a much better putter, or you'll be talking to yourself. My first time on them, I had a good 4 putt. I lagged a 35 footer about 1 1/2 feet past the hole. It was a downhiller and it hit the hole and came out, then rolled about 10-12 feet. I missed the comeback and tapped in my 4th putt.

Ok, but inconsistent.

Sometimes they are perfect, and roll very true, but then other days, they are pathetic, and I get annoyed about it, which puts off my whole game.

Ok but inconsistent - at home course.

A common statement often heard after a putt would be, "it looked good in the air"

I voted not good. The chemical used to spray for poa annua and a host of other weeds was washed away by our idiot superintendant that turned on the sprinklers hours after the greens were sprayed. Now the greens resemble Bob Barker's plinko board on the Price is Right. Making a putt on our greens right now is 50% luck.

Mmmmm... putting on bluegrass with money on the line is soooooooo exciting. Tap the ball and start cheering for it like your horse is in the lead... it's about all you can do sometimes

I voted excellent. They're tough but fair - they stimp at 11 or so in the summer (although I've sworn it's been as high as 15 before). There's only one green I'd consider unfair because of its undulations (out of 54 holes) so it's all good.

The greens I play regularly are decent, but nothing to write home about. White Lake Oaks is better than Heather Highlands. White Lake generally keeps their greens in good shape. Heather Highlands takes great care of their top course, but we play our couples league on the shorter course. The greens can range from lightning quick to slow and wet. There are a few that have goose damage for large parts of the season. The worst part is that 1, 3, 5, 8 and 9 all have multiple tiers. This is not bad in itself, but where they cut the pins is often times ridiculous. I have actually seen cups cut into the sides of mounds and on slopes going between tiers.

In the Northwest they're inconsistent at best. High end courses like Washington National have terrific greens - smooth and fast - but the combination of very wet weather and cold temps at night make the greens at most courses very bumpy from footsteps in the rainy season. In summer they're much better, though at the munis I play I'm still baffled by the number of unrepaired ball marks I see. Drives me nuts.

Two days ago I saw a guy sink his ball, literally, 2 inches deep into a wet green at Auduban.

I watched the guy look at it, dig his ball out, and give it the little "foot pat" and putt his ball in and walk away. I was with one friend and we were waiting on a four-some to finish up a par 3 in front of us, and this gentleman was playing up behind us. I was sooooooooo close to just blowing up on him and riding his ass all the way back to the clubhouse, but instead I decided to ask him why he didn't repair it. Come to find out, the guy didn't know how to fix a hole/divot, and didn't even own a tool to try. So I gave him one of my cheap divot tools (don't ask me why I have like 5 in my bag), and while we waited on the four-some to finish, I showed him how to repair a ballmark/divot. I'd like to think most people are like this... not knowing what to do... as opposed to just not giving a rat's patoot. I guess I'm an optimist at heart

I have never seen greens like that. The way you describe it is pretty cool. So what did you shoot?

39 on the front which was the easier 9

45 on the back which was very tough by being mountainous First time I've played the course so an 84 was decent. Also, I kept looking for ball marks from my approach shots, never found any, there weren't any ball marks anywhere. Keep in mind the course is private and not used a lot, but the firmness of the greens was amazing, how come other courses can't get it like this? Consistency is the biggest key, if all the greens are equal in speed, you begin to get very accurate distance on all putts as you play your round.

    • Day 126 (18 Apr 24) - Trail arm only drill with the LW…focused on letting the club drop, engaging the bounce and letting the club pop the ball up….wrapped up by repeating drill with both hands on the club…
    • OPPs, I guess I have been doing the drill incorrectly, just ignore this.  But as they say, mistakes are learning opportunities. Let’s hope I can learn from mine.
    • Some thoughts after the 1st 9 holes of the year. The driver was pretty good, nothing crazy. My miss seems to be just a push. The start line is a bit too far right for my taste, but they are drawing back at least. Hitting middle-ish of the face to slightly toe. Part of the right miss is a bit of open face and off the toe slightly.  Irons, some really good strikes, others were not so good. I am feeling a few things, when I am being mindful of the swing I made.  1) Got to get the pause down again, and keep things shorter (as usual). One of the best iron shots was when I tried to mimic Rahm's swing length, lol. I caught a flier and hit an 8-iron like 190 yards into an area of no return for that golf ball. The swing felt great 😉  2) I got to stay taller in transition, feel like I gain tons of space between my hands and my chest. The bad swing is the old swing, bad right elbow, tilt to lower the club. This was too much shallowing, and hitting the ball fat. I just think of it this way, you are bent over, and you can reach the ball at address. So, you can reach the ball at impact by getting your hands down.  3) The final thing is the timing. It might take some time to get some flow into the swing. Timing up hands down and the turn is a bit off. Focusing on the hands down kind of stalls everything for me, at least it feels like my hips do not turn. I end up hitting a decent strike, just feels meh athletically, lol.  Short game was Ok, which means pretty good for not practicing it. Not short, but not round destroying.  Putting, doing much better now that I quickened up my routine. Line up, looking at my target. Glance down at the ball to get into my stance. Glance up at my target spot again, then hit the ball with in like 1-2 seconds after looking back down at the ball. Trying not to get to static over the ball while putting.
    • Oh I'm dumb, I just noticed I did the MyStrategy from the wrong tee box. I don't think it changes anything, though. I'll play it as a three shot hole and I still don't really want to miss right (guy I played with on Sunday never found his ball he hit just over the trees right). I think the trees left are considered part of the environmentally sensitive area because it's part of the drainage area for the course. I actually like this hole a lot. I'll try to remember to take a picture next time. I probably overestimated the wind speed. We had sustained winds of like 12-15mph with gusts up to 25mph. The wind is actually forecast to be WNW on Saturday instead of WSW like was when I played on Sunday so if I play this hole again the wind will be pushing towards that bunker. Similar speeds, though. Wind is always a factor at this course because there's really nothing blocking it. I'm definitely going to have to pay attention to it, especially with the wind. I hit a handful of short iron approaches a lot farther than I thought I would on Sunday. As of right now the only thing I know for sure is I'm starting on Ridge. I don't know if the back 9 will be played on Meadow or Lake.
    • Day 113: 4/18/24 Stack training progress check after finishing my 6th program, and 4th Full Speed Spectrum Training session, which is recommended for my next program.     Gained 1 mph with driver, 195 g, 95g. Maintained with 280 g , and gained 2 with 145 g. Lost 1 mph on both lead and trail arm. Felt like I lost distance in my last round…
