Shaft Options for my new Mizuno MP-57s

As many of you know, I'm excited about getting new Mizuno MP-57s. I'm going to a Mizuno fitting day in just over a week at RD Anaheim. I know what goes on in a fitting session (although I don't know if anything is different with how Mizuno fitting days work).

(I'm mildly worried because the driving range at RD Anaheim uses floater balls because you're hitting to water and not to grass, so I don't know if that will affect the ball flight I want to see. I don't think that is going to affect the fitting, or Mizuno wouldn't be doing a fitting there.)

I've been looking through the options for the clubs on Mizuno's website, http://www.mizunousa.com/equipment.n...golf&cat;=irons . We've discussed lofts in another thread, and I'm pretty settled on that. Lie angle and shaft length I'll be fit for.

Seeing as how my current 7-iron (34 degrees) goes 130 yards and my swing speed with driver is in the double digits MPH, I'm pretty sure I'm going with regular flex shafts. However, I don't know much of the differences between the ones listed on the Mizuno website as shaft options, and I figured I'd ask this board, where I can find people knowledgeable about this.

The options are:

Dynamic Gold R300
Exsar IS2 Tour Spec(R)
Project X (5.5)

I've heard of DG and heard the name of Project X going around, but I don't know much about them other than some cursory information found on Google. Can you give me your thoughts on the respective merits of these? Are they popular for any particular reason? For my modest swing speed, is one likely to make a difference? Will one make a difference as my swing speed increases? I figure my distance has been increasing lately, so maybe it's due to an increase in swing speed.

i only know px has better feel (softer) and 5.5 is equivalent of a stiff flex (4.5 = regular)
you can also look at ns pro shafts as they are lightweight and soft.
so it might help with swing speed also provides good feel.

id say that the PX have less feel to them than the DG's and provide a little higher ball flight, thats what i found when i got fitted for my mp57's. because of the lack of feel i went with the s300's instead of the px 5.5.

ive never really liked the px shafts so i would always opt for the dg if it was an option.

Yup, you're pretty much stating the opposite of what 99% of the players that have hit both shafts would say about the feel, including myself. Although you are accurate on the flex, 5.5 is typically thought of to be the equivalent of a DGS300, 6.0 is stiffer, almost an x-stiff.

So the consensus seems to be that 5.5 is too stiff for me (I use R-flex), and I should be deciding between the other two?

Mizuno is really good about custom orders, if you're used to a specific iron shaft (rifle 4.5, px 4.5, or DGR300) I'd just order it with them, that way you can't go wrong.

really? i didn't know. ha ha ha

something about DGS300 just bugs me. a while ago at the vancouver golf show i've tried mp57 w/ px 5.5. it felt really really good. then i tried mp60 w/ DGS300, i just couldn't get a shot with good feel.

I actually have some valuable input directly on-point about this.

I was fit over the last week for a new iron set, and wound up with MP-67s with Project X 5.5s, +.5". I hit a lot of balls to come to this conclusion, and I want to confirm your suspicion that the 5.5s are too stiff for you.

We very nearly went with the MP-57s but my dispersion - and that's very important because it's my dispersion, not yours - wasn't as good as my dispersion with the 67s. But with either club the Project X shafts were significantly better in terms of trajectory, consistency and length than the DGS300s.

Here's the other thing: the 5.5s are a little bit less stiff than the DGS300s. I carry a 7-iron between 152 and 158 according to Trackman, and roughly 5 yards further on a range. The 5.5s are perfect for me - I conclude from that fact that they cannot be perfect for you. And that's the point after all, you're getting fitted so the clubs will be perfect.

I'd look real hard at a lower digit Project X though, because after hitting well over 200 monitored balls with the same heads with Project X shafts, and comparing them to the DG shafts, the experience has been memorable. They're a great product, and to my eye, hands and mind a better product than the usual DG shafts (but who knows about the Black Gold, etc. stuff, which I've never hit).

Good luck with the fitting! You'll love the clubs no matter what you pick, because the 57s are a GREAT club.

Yeah, this is one of the reasons I'm going with them. I'm not used to a specific iron shaft - I don't even know which shafts are in my irons at the moment, other than that they're R-Flex.

I am pretty sure that the Exsar is the stock Mizuno graphite shaft

This explains why I haven't seen anything about them outside of Mizuno circles.

I actually have some valuable input directly on-point about this.

This is very useful information. Thanks very much! You easily have a good 25-30 yards on me with the 7-iron (although how far I hit the MP-57 7-iron I don't yet know), so if the 5.5s are right for you, it seems logical they aren't for me. Thanks again!

Does anyone know the upcharge for the Project X shafts over the DG's when ordering on the MP-57's? I believe 8 shafts through golfsmith are roughly $230 and just curious if they were the same price.

I think between $250 and $300 is normal.

I actually just purchased some MP 57's today with the X5.5 shafts, so hopefully I like them. I've been playing standard clubs off the rack, Titleist 990 with DGS300 shafts. My 57's are 1" long, 1* up. I was amazed at the difference in being fitted and what I've been swinging, hopefully that handicap comes down.

I've been confused when purchasing regarding shafts. I wanted a little lighter club, as my tempo is pretty smooth, and wanted a little higher flight since I've typically been able to play a punch when needed, and fairly high ball flight already, and I don't like the feel of the current shafts I use.

The upcharge for Project X shafts over the DG's when purchasing from Mizuno is $50 for a set of 8. My set of irons were fitted by a Mizuno professional during a demo day in Souther California.

Shindig, DG Stiff is roughly a 5.8 frequency in Project X. I play PX 6.0, and from my experience, found the PX 6.0 to have a lower, penetrating ball flight than DG Stiff. That's one reason I chose the PX shaft since I hit moon shots with my irons. I used to play a set of Titleist DCI 962 in DG S300. The PX are high kick point shafts which puts less spin on the ball that contributes to the penetrating ball flight. As far as feel for the shafts, PX actually feels more lively when the ball is struck on the sweet spot. If you click on the link, http://www.royalprecision.com/precis..._projectx.html , there is a fitting chart at the bottom of the web page.

At your clubhead speed and carry distance, I would strongly consider Nippon 850 or 950 shafts. They are lighter, feel great, and will increase both your clubhead speed and probably your trajectory if properly fit.
