I have an extremely severe case of the s***** (rhymes with tanks), and I have had ups and downs trying to get rid of them. First, it was just with my wedges and 60-100 yard shots, but then it moved its little infectious ways into my irons. My team coach helped me by having my left hand more to the left, and that was working fine. The only problem was that I could not make a full swing that way, and was hitting my normal 135 with an 8 iron down to 100. But the shank worked its way past that, and having my wrist straighter won't help. I was in my backyard trying to figure out what was wrong, and I think I've found it, but haven't been able to try it out yet.

Im hitting my driver the best I ever could right now, perfect little draw, everything is nice. But my short irons and wedges are causing me lots of trouble. I was doing my normal swing with my driver and that was working fine. So I went out back with a 56º and figured it out. My plane was inside-out, and I was keeping my right elbow against my side on my backswing (Im right handed). I made sure I had my right elbow all the way out and that the club head was straight coming back. Doing this I hit a couple full swings and the ball went soaring perfectly. I haven't been able to see if this is really the cure for me yet, but does this sound right to anyone?

Please give me a rep point if this works....

Take away with a closed or "slightly hooded" face. Take a 1/2 to 3/4 swing and take an extra club or two. Spot shoot to a target 1 or 2 yards ahead of the ball. Forget about how your swing might "look"...you will hit it straight. or a draw.

Alright, I'll try stuff out this weekend. If my new technique doesnt already work and yours does I'll come back to you with the big news.
Thanks

Good deal, and good luck.

I would suggest hitting a bucket before you tee off with my "patented" technique. you will hit a lower flight...but if you hold the clubhead square though the finish you will get some backspin and tour juice. As Rocky would say " I'm just a ham and egger...but I do my best"

You are probably coming to far inside to far outside with your swing. Possibly try a more upright stance? I have them every so often too, I feel for you.

Although I'm no where close to giving instructions but have had a case of this as well. A well known tip is to try to hit toward the toe of the iron..and then start getting your feel/swing back.

I notice this happens when I get start to cram up against the ball. It will pass.

The shanks is probably the worst feeling in golf IMO. I know when I'm making the downswing if I'm going to shank it or not, is that a too much of an in to out path? I think it might be.

Yeah I when I went out to practice in my backyard last night and hit those couple of shots, it felt soo solid. Im not sure if that will be the thing but Im definitely ready to get rid of this sickness.

lots of things can cause this problem and different people will do different things that cause it.
for me the cause of it was sliding on the downswing-moving sideways. And/Or lunging at the ball on the downswing which causes arms/hands to get closer to the ball at impact thus moving out the clubface and hitting the hosel.

Be careful in fixing the shank. I wound up overcompensating and started hitting towards the toe. I guess initially you might to purposely hit towards the toe, but you want to cut that out eventually.

The other day, after I hit a driver, I saw the ball mark right at the top left most part of the clubface. That close to being a whiff. Ball started out way right, but drew in a bit and I really didn't lose that much distance.

Be careful you don't overcompensate. I tended to start hitting towards the toe to avoid shanking. I guess initially you want to hit towards the toe, but eventually, you want to cut that out. The confusing thing is shots close to the hosel and toe both go right, usually

After I hit driver recently, I checked the clubface. The ball mark was on the extreme left, top of the face. That close to whiffing. Worked out okay though. Started out way right and drew in, minor loss in distance.

Thanks for the help everyone but I fixed it. I was pulling my right elbow in on my backswing and would turn the clubface right away. Now I make sure its right on line when I come back and I even gained some distance compared to before.

Well I've been fighting this for a while now and have seeked lessons to get rid of them. What my problem was I didn't have enough extension in my take away and my right elbow tucked into my side. The golf tech guy gave me a drill with a ball in between my arms to promote a one peice take a way. But I also needed to make sure I get enough shoulder turn. I think I've beat the old shank a rousky but I need to keep working at it....good luck.

For me they have always been mental. I know I have the ability to swing the club properly, but sometimes my mind screws that up. I just follow the "Tin Cup" routine and move change from one pocket to the other and tie my shoes differently.

my shanks were caused by holding the club face open at impact, as a result of fighting a hook , the pro told me slightly weaken my grip, then just trust yourself to release the clubhead through impact,,,,, voila ,,gone

lots of things can cause this problem and different people will do different things that cause it.

This has been my problem...it usually starts out me hitting some fat shots, but then a major case of the dreaded sh....s shows up. Last 4 rounds, but yesterday a friend point out my lower body was 'sliding' not rotating. I guess my question is how to correct this or drills to help correct. I have league play tonight and I'm already wondering how it will go!!!! My current plan is more practice swings until I get comfortable with my rotation, I also plan to go up 1 club and swing easier...any other suggestions. Thanks.

also watch your alignment. feet pointing too far right of target combined with a outside-in swing will bring a shank into play.
