Does anybody else have a problem with achieving a weight shift in the down swing ?

This plagues me with fat or pulled shots becaue I don't get off my right side fast enough.

To solve this I am trying to start the weight shift earlier, like during the transition, but this is difficult because I am one of those who can't walk and chew gum at the same time.

Any drills or exercises are welcome.

My brother took lesson from a pro last week and he was amazed what a difference the weight shift has done for his game in distance.

He said the pro told him that the backswing starts with his arms and shoulder and the downswing starts with your hips turn.

make sure you are fully turned with your shoulder and hips, the back of your shoulder should face the target and the your right hip or near the opening of your right pants pocket should face away from the target for a full turn.

and start you downswing with your hips. I think the visual could be a bath towel that you twist and twist when you uncoil it one side starts to uncoil first.

when you uncoil you will find the slot from the inside and with head behind the ball will release your power along with your weight shift into the ball.

another helpful exercise is to swing the club with your feet together and slowly separate your feet and feel the weight swift from your right to your left (for right handed) and when you finish your swing you hips should face the target.

tm22721,

My instructor and I have been working on this portion of my swing for a few weeks now. He suggests to do the following in with parts 1) & 2) in sequence during practice, and 1) & 2) simultaneously during play.

1) Once at the top and coiled, laterally shift the forward hip (and only your hip) toward the target by a maximum of three inches. He claims that this move is suppose to be very subtle.

2) Rotate and pivot the shoulders down and around with inactive arms, other then maintaining the triangle connection. Don't actively rotate the hips, but allow them to rotate freely around while the shoulders catch up at impact and then pass them well after impact.

3) Do this while keeping both feet flat on the ground until impact. Try to get the sensation of pushing off the inside of the base of your right foot, and not the toe area of the back foot. This push will help with forward weight transfer and body rotation.

Try hitting 75% backswing punch shots where your left hand and forearm form a straight line, not hinged. Not being able to hinge your wrist through impact forces you to move your weight through the ball. Make sure on your follow through you dont hinge your wrist until your club is pointing at your target.

I do this when I catch myself going back to my old mostly hands swing.

Thanks everybody for responses.

Found this description on the net.

"Swing must initiate with an aggressive weight shift
to left leg as the club reaches the top. Weight
transfer must be completed by impact. The
correct sensation is that left side is being
stretched taut just as the weight settles
onto left foot (left shoulder rises, right
shoulder drops). "

The pros all appear to have this signature move so I will try to emulate.
