Swinging Driver On Plane

For the majority of the time, my swing plane with my driver is far too vertical. It is basically the same stroke i would take with a 7iron. There are days when im able to hit solid drives...but far too often im going in too steep.

The swing thought that ive been using that has been working more or less is thinking about tucking in my right elbow (im right handed) on my back swing.

Anyone have any other tips on flatting out a driver swing plane?

The swing thought that ive been using that has been working more or less is thinking about tucking in my right elbow (im right handed) on my back swing.

Doesn't this alone help alot to flatten out the swing? Not sure what you mean by more or less. When I keep my right elbow tucked close its pretty hard to bring it up steep.

well one thing i need to work on is keeping my shoulders square to the ball at contact which keeps the swing on the right line. When i am pushing the ball or slicing i am turning my shoulders towards the target before contact which creates an outside in swing path, I think anyways. I also use your thining about the right elbow, keeping it into the body on the downswing.

I believe I am doing the same thing right now and can't seem to shake it. My thought was the same as yours, I turn my shoulders towards the target before the rest of my body. I have been fighting a major slice I haven't had in years. Any suggestions on how you stopped this?

I don't believe you should focus on 'flattening the plane'. So many times I have observed this 'two plane phenomenon' that people attempt to do and end up with some off the wall 'too flat plane'.

I personally buy into the various 'steps' of the swings as outlined by McLean in the 8 Step Golf Swing. One thing would be to get an instructor to check your swing and work with you. You can use a Swingyde to ensure your plane is on the correct 'course'.

You shouldn't change your swing plane with any club. If you think about your spine angle and your club shaft plane at address as a 90 degree angle, the longer the club, the less forward angle you will have. The shorter the club the more your upper body leans toward the ball. This relationship between your spine and the ground determines your swing plane.

In addition, if you have a 2-plane swing, you have to "drop" your hands from the top before beginning the downswing (classic swing) If you have a 1-plane swing, you have to take-away with 1piece and resist "raising" your arms closer to your head at the top. Keep your left arm parallel to your shoulder line.
