Harrington has leap from 11th to 3rd in the world rankings with Sergio Gracia moving out of the top 10 of the European Order of Merit. What a great achievement for the man!

Yep moved up 11 places! I say that he deserves to be there after back to back titles. It has shook up the Ryder cup standings as now Sergio may need a wildcard to get onto the team.

shows how bogus the system really is. The points are that tight, anyone who wins a tournament moves up a million places

well, Harrington didn't just win any ole tournament. Let's not act like he just won the Zurich Classic in a field that contains 5 of the top 40 players.

I completely agree. If you look at the position that all the other people in the top 10 finished then he deserves to move up a long way.

On another note Norman has made the biggest move in history moving around 400 places!

That's an awfully silly argument that demonstrates no knowledge at all of how the rankings are computed.

It's not like Richard S. Johnson is suddenly #3 in the world. No, he's #271. Harrington's won two of the last five majors. That strikes me as "#3 in the World" type stuff. Heck, I'm surprised he's not #2.

Yes very true! Although Mickelson finished T19 after a shocking start so may deserves to just be in 2nd. Also Harrington hasn't won many PGA events so that may be another reason why Mickleson is still No.2

Yeah, I know all that, I just think that you could make a case for Harrington being #2... but mostly I was saying that to counter the guy who thinks it odd that Harrington moved up to #3 to begin with.

In other words, he's more a #2 than a #4, so #3 is fine.

I've had Harrington #2 since March. I use specific golf stats to bet the weekly golf matchups. The most vital stats placed Harrington #2 at the time, which surprised me, but I always default to the numbers over subjectivity.

BTW, the guys who make those matchups have obviously done some work on the most relevant stats. Early this decade those matchups were glorified theft, wide disparity in ability even if the name recognition was similar. I got theoretical huge advantage in many matchups every week and the percentage was excellent. Then it slowly declined and now I'm relying on a half yard here and 1/10 of a stroke there.

was your point that the current points system is biased towards events played in the United States rather than Europe ? and that consequently pga tour players have higher rankings relative than european tour players which is not representative of either of their true abilities?

If anyone missed it, it's because you failed to make one.

what i was saying is that the rankings in the top 100 are soo close that anyone who wins a tournament or major goes lauching up the board. i wasn't bagging harrington's ability, he must have game if he can win in those conditions which were played in the british open.

Guess I see it differently than you. It's not like the guy leapt 150 spots in the world rankings. Padraig was a top player before. Now he's just a bit higher.

And again, how far up is Richard S. Johnson now?
