I've been playing golf for about six months. I am a decent hitter, my driver gives me 250+ yds, straight (but not accurate ), and I get 160 yds from my 6 iron (played baseball for too many years, I think it helps ).

While I am comfortable with the distance I get (compared to my golf buddies, who have been playing much longer than me, I am not bad), I am wondering if getting a set of player clubs can help me improve my accuracy. I hit it mostly with the center of the clubs face, but I still hit it fat very often (nothing that a few more thousand balls in the driving range can't fix ).

I have a set of TM RAC OS, but I am tempted to try the Titleist 695 CB. I like the idea of better control and feedback. I have found some good sets on eBay, at a very affordable price. Will they work for me? Will I have better accuracy? Am I rushing my progress?

Thank you for your comments.

You are not rushing progress. IF you feel like you can hit them then try it. You will be frustrated at first but you will have to work on technique to get better. Your mishits will lose distance. However, with better technique you can also work the ball.

The accuracy and workability of the player irons comes not from the club, but from the player. They are easier to work the ball with but much much harder to hit.

Player irons are just that, for "players". They are much much harder to hit and would hurt more than help. If you are looking to get more feel, but still need forgiveness look at cavity backed irons with smaller heads. They have the look and feel of player irons but still give you forgiveness.

It wouldnt make sense for you to make a purchase like that yet. Keep working hard get your handicap in the single digits and then atart looking at the player irons.

The Mizuno MP-57 is a great players iron that has a good amount of forgiveness to it. The Sand Trap has done a really nice review on the irons, and actually convinced me to give them a try. The players irons gave me the feedback that I needed to be able to make swing corrections and I am now a much better and more consistent golfer. With a players iron you will get consistent trajectories, which has helped me control distance and ball flight. If you think that you can hit a players iron and have the time and patience to work through a few hand stingings, then I say that you should get them. Good luck with your purchase and let us know what you choose to get.

if you feel you're ready & want to dedicate yourself to golf, then WELCOME to the crazy rollercoaster. it's the BEST game that you'll ever play.

I went from shovel x-16's to mp-60's and i've never been happier (would love to hit the mp67's though).

if your ball striking's consistent and you're looking for a sleeker setup & a club that instills confidence in the ability to execute the shot, I'd say check out the mp57 or 60's (since the 60's being phased out for the mp-62's.
The 57's all around an easier club to hit, but still has that muscle back feel to it.

The titliest AP1's are a great club (never played with them, but i hit a few and they're kind of awesome).

I'd also check out a bunch of other clubs too. I'm a fan of Mizuno b/c of the feel and the design & how awesome they are.

But I can't knock other irons that I haven't tried. Go to a store or fitter (I suggest a specialized fitter) who will get you fitted for the best irons for your game...it'll take an hour with a specialized fitter..and then you'll do a blind test with a bunch of different clubs to see which ones you hit best & works for you.

Don't get discouraged if the clubs you hit best with aren't the ones you set out to get. I was so wanting the mp-67's when I went last year. I hit them ok, but the 60's I hit so much better.

When did you get the Mizuno's? When you were a 25 Handicapper?

I got mine when I was about a 22. I didn't put in for a HC until the end of july last year. I ended the HC season at a 12.9

I've been playing golf since I was 15, but haven't got out that much in previous years. I was consistently shooting 110+ with my old northwestern set, but after investing in a new yonex putter and a set of tommy armour cavity backs, i've taken at least 15 strokes off my game. I wasn't so confident hitting the irons before, but now I look forward to pulling them out of my bag.

Ping_guy, you are right: the accuracy and workability come from the player. I am just wondering if using a club that doesn't fix my misshits will help me be that player. I think that having a better feeling of my shots will actually be more helping than a club that hits the ball by itself.
But I agree that I be better with some help, and the 695 CB are cavity back, with a small head and are supposed to have that feeling that I am looking for. I'll take a look to the Mizunos, based on the excellent comments that I have found in this forum.

Thank you all

Get a set of irons that suit your game, your swing will get better as you practice, its got nothing to do with the irons,or i got player irons and its making me want to hit it better.Bullshit,we all work on our swing e.t.c no matter what irons we have,People say i got these irons and i was hitting it all over the place for about a year but they made me strike the ball better eventually. They forget that they have an extra 6 months or a years play behind them, why not hit the ball a bit better with more forgiving irons and then when you get your swing flaws worked out get a set of players irons.

My suggestion would be get a combo set. That is to say cb's 3-6 or 7 and mb 7 or 8 on up. If you can't hit a 8i blade/mb golf isn't for you. This, of course is personal opinion. Of the 2 you've listed, IMO, you would be happier with the Titleists, better club, again IMO.

The 695.Cb is not a club for beginners. If you had a choice between the two, go with the tm rac os. Its more forgiving.

Id go with a set of MX-19s or Big Bertha irons if it were me. A set of players clubs is only going to make your accuracy worse. Id suggest a set of oversize irons that are going to be really forgiving.
I went from playing a set of super game-improvement irons (shooting bogey on average) to a set of Titleist DCI 981s and as soon as I switched to the Titleists you'd swear Id never swing a golf club before. It was that bad.
I have since ditched the DCIs, switched back to my old irons and I have no regrets.
While you could grow into a set of player's irons over time, chances are that you would get so frustrated from hitting poor shots that you would give up long before you ever got there.

1 vote towards the Taylormade R7's.

I have the r7 TP's but the r7's might fit your game nicely.

How did golfers use to learn, 10 or 20 years ago? Even when I am new to the sport, I know that the "Game Improvement" and "Super Game Improvement" categories are relatively new.

I started playing about six months ago. I looked in eBay for clubs that I've seen from my friends, so I bought my TM RAC OS irons and a Callaway Great Big Bertha II 10 deg, no offset driver. Without knowing it, I bought the proper irons for a beginners (over sized, forgivable), but a not so easy to hit driver.

I heard recommendations from my friends about changing my driver for a draw version, with a bigger head. Because I was starting , I didn't wanted to spend more money (and I wasn't sure that I would like golf), so I kept my driver. For the first months, I wasn't able to hit it and keep the ball inside of the driving range (I think that my shots went almost as far to the right as they were to the front), but now I can hit it fairly straight. What I mean is, I learned that I can hit a club that I am not suppose to hit, as long as I have patience and keep practicing.

I appreciate your comments and suggestions. I will look in eBay for a set of Titleist or Mizuno clubs, and I will keep going to the driving range until I can hit them well enough.
