I've been hit twice in my life by golf balls on the course and both times they were by a playing partner....several years apart and both times by the same person. He clanked one off a tree into my leg the first time, the second time was an ugly shank almost straight across the fairway into my shoulder...almost hard to believe someone could hit a ball so far off line but no damage done.
We still play together but I substitute my golf cap for a hard hat when I play with him...

You can talk to a slice, but a hook doesn't listen.

In my bag:
14 clubs and some beer on ice...

I've never been hit, but I had a ball hit at a 90 degree angle where I had to hit the deck really quickly to avoid being hit square in the middle of the face. That definately gets the heart pumping, let me tell you.

I've also hit a guy once. I yelled fore, but it was windy and he never heard me. I had just started playing and hit a screamer pull that was maybe three feet off the ground. Never left it's target and hit the guy square in the left thigh. I left the ball over there I was so scared...my dad went over and apoligized.

That's how I like my golf. A kick in the face. -Ben

I managed to hit my brother a few years ago. Was about 50yrds from the green a hit a quart swing pitch shot, he was walking up to the green and I hooded the club over and hit him right in the back. He was very amused by it!

He was also hit by some old guy on the course where we were members. We played late one summer evening, 9th hole was a 160yrd par 3 and we'd been not seen anyone behind or ahead of us for the eight holes. We get onto the green of the 9th (rather tricky) and after my brother's first putt from the edge of the green he takes a look round then throws down a second to practice. Next thing we hear is some guy shouting 'fore' and a ball lands about two feet from him, then hits him in the shoulder. We putt out and wait on the 10th tee for him. We were both part of the junior section of the club, and I was about 19 at the time. I called him out with a few expletives and asked him what the hell he was thinking, noting my brother could have been killed by his idiotic actions. He tried to claim we were wasting his time and he wanted to take our names and report us for slow play and for being rude to him! I don't know where the hell he was for the other eight holes, and we didn't see him on the tee ten seconds before the incoming ball hit him. We did have a lot of senior members who hated many of the juniors and moaned our occasional tournament disrupted them...

I still don't understand how slow play is ever used as an excuse to hit a golf ball at someone.

I, too was hit by a golf ball twice in my life. But by two different people. The first one was by my dad. I stood a few yards ahead of him but on his right side about 45 degrees. Guess what the ball went straight to my left leg, almost hit my knee. Then I had to just go to the clubhouse to wait for him to finish. That also happend in the first few holes. Anyway, second time was by an acquaintance who was one flight behind me. He sliced his shot while I was already 30 yards from the green. Did not hear him yell fore, so got hit at corner of my forehead. Luckily I had a cap on, but it still hit me pretty good. I had to go get an MRI just to be sure nothing was broken. Hope that's the last of them.

This happened to me too, however I got hit in the middle of the back. I was standing 30 yards right of a woman we were paired with and not really watching her swing and she shanked one directly right and caught me with it. She felt really bad and it stung more than anything, but no harm to me, needless to say I stood behind her after that.

Walking accross a green carrying my bag & got smacked right in the head by one of my partner's skulled bunker shots. Dropped me like a rock! Why he was hitting while I was walking accross the green, I still haven't figured out. However, maybe it was me that was the one that wasn't paying attention...dunno. It was the 15th & I finished the round though!!

    • Day 542, April 26, 2024 A lesson no-show, no-called (he had the wrong time even though the last text was confirming the time… 😛), so I used 45 minutes or so of that time to get some good work in.
    • Yeah, that. It stands out… because it's so rare. And interest in Caitlin Clark will likely result in a very small bump to the WNBA or something… and then it will go back down to very low viewership numbers. Like it's always had. A small portion, yep. It doesn't help that she lost, either. Girls often don't even want to watch women playing sports. My daughter golfs… I watch more LPGA Tour golf than she does, and it's not even close. I watch more LPGA Tour golf than PGA Tour golf, even. She watches very little of either. It's just the way it is. Yes, it's a bit of a vicious cycle, but… how do you break it? If you invest a ton of money into broadcasting an LPGA Tour event, the same coverage you'd spend on a men's event… you'll lose a ton of money. It'd take decades to build up the interest. Even with interest in the PGA Tour declining.
    • Oh yea, now I remember reading about you on TMZ!
    • Of course there's not a simple or knowable answer here. But the whole Caitlin Clark phenomenon is a nice example IMO. Suddenly there was wall to wall media coverage and national attention and... the women's tournament got similar ratings to the men's and much higher ratings than the men in the final four. With every indication that there will be some portion of the uptick that remains going forward. And there's the whole element that Sue Bird brought up. That basketball needed a pretty enough white superstar guard. One who looks like the "cute little white girls" that describes most of the soccer USWNT that's been able to achieve much higher popularity than any version of women's basketball, which is dominated by black players and none of any race who could be described as little... I do think women's sports are in a good place to start taking off more though. It's really only in the coming 5-10 years that the majority of girls will start to come of age with post Title IX grandmothers (as in their grandmothers were allowed to be serious athletes). I don't follow men's or women's basketball much, but in golf for sure the women's tour has gotten much deeper over the past 20 years and only looks to keep going in that direction. I've heard the same about women's basketball. And the patriarchal attitudes that socialized girls out of sports and everyone out of women's sports fandom aren't gone but have def diminished.
