Will blade irons improve your swing?

I'm at the stage now where I can hit blade irons down to the 5 iron pretty well if I really concentrate.

But on the flip side I can pull out some larger cavity backs and generally not much give a care and hit pretty good shots.

I'm wondering will it really help me much if I switch to blades?

It seems that forcing me to concentrate to hit good shots would promote me to become a better player over time, would you say that's true?

It depends on your attitude towards the game. I moved to blades at the beginning of this season and I've shaved several strokes off my game. There is quite a steep learning curve, so as long as you're not too disheartened in the beginning, blades can do wonders for your game. Now, this is not to say that everyone should move to blades, you need to have a decent swing already to take on the challenge.

I find it ironic that "game improvement" irons more so hide your flaws as opposed to revealing them like some player clubs. IMO.

I bought a virtually new set of MP32's so I could practice with blades. I have 57's that I bought about a month prior and love them but I wanted something to use at the range to force me to become a better ball striker.

So far the experiment is fairing pretty well. I spent my usual time at the range for the past two weeks hitting with the blades. I didnt play a round during that span and then played two rounds this past weekend. Both rounds were my lowest of the year by 5 and 9 strokes. My putting average stayed the same so I new the strokes came from tee to green.

I am learning to play with a set of Nike Pro-Combos. I was told by some more experienced golfers that it was a terrible set for a beginner and I would not be able to hit them well for a long time.

My experience has been that I focus more on fundementals and making a good swing to play the less forgiving clubs. Though fusterating at times the more accurate feedback has been encouraging to me to make a efficient and repeatable swing that will hopefully help me score in the long run.

For those less experienced in golf equipment such as my self the pro-combos are blades for 8-PW, muscle back for 5-7 and cavity back for 3-4.

So depending on the type of person you are, I belive blades could help you improve your swing if the steep learning curve doesn't get to you first.

Why not! some blades are not that difficult to hit, I switch from Mizuno mp30 to mp33 now for about 1 1/2 years and have reduced my handicap and shot 3 of my lowest scores this year. I pick up the mp33 for about $250 on ebay.

Think about it for a few moments and apply some logic to the question and the answer is simply NO .

Practice and lessons will improve your swing. Blades may be the catalyst for wanting to improve as off centre hits aren't as good therefore you either have to improve your swing or use something else.

Think about your response for a few moments.

The top three things you need to improve your game is feedback, feedback, and feedback. Blades give you that threefold compared to most other clubs.

Just did think about it for a few moments and here's what I came up with. Say I have a bad over the top move that results in me catching the ball on the toe of my 5 iron continually. With my blade 5 iron I can now feel that I am hitting the ball on the toe, however I won't stop doing so until I correct the swing flaw. Changing iron style to a blade or game improvement type club WILL NOT correct the swing flaw itself.

I have absolutely no problem at all with the statement that a blade will provide more feedback, in fact I agree with it 100%. However I completely disagree that a blade (or a swing improvement iron) will improve your swing.

A blade wont help with an over the top move or any other swing flaw... I agree with that. But, it will more than likely help diagnose problems a little easier.

You even said it yourself... if you can now feel that you are hitting off the toe... you can now start to correct the flaw in itself.

With any problem... you need to actually know what the problem is before solving it. Thats half the battle.

Chingali is right but there is always the X factor, the gray area where you step up and the clubs make you a better player for what ever reason. I say if you are thinking about them and you can afford the blades, why not go for it. You can always try them at the golf store, driving range or demo a set.

I bought mine blades and never looked back.

Think about your response for a few moments.

But it doesn't fix your swing.

I guess my answer is that if you're willing to work at improving your swing after blades teach you that it's not good, then they will help. But unless you have a pretty good swing right now, your scores will be worse until your swing gets more consistent.

My reply was in response to the question "Will blade irons improve your swing?" and had nothing at all to do with diagnosing problems as the question makes no mention of it.

As for being able to begin correcting swing flaws by having an indication of impact position, go out to any driving range or practice fairway and find a guy hitting it on the toe and tell him that he's hitting it on the toe and see if he can sort out his problem with no further input. In just about every instance unless you are talking about someone off less than a handicap of say 4 or 5 who has a good understanding of swing mechanics they won't be able to to. Here is the biggest positive I can see for a 14 handicapper buying a set of blades. It'll help him or her work out quickly that they need to find a teaching pro and practice more.

I'm pretty sure that noone in this thread has even implied that swinging a blade will miraculously fix their swing.

Everything I have stated was simply they aide in diagnosing problems in your swing.

I swear I think more and more people are turning to blades these days. I didnt know that many people that played them when I first started (1996), but know I see them all over the place.

That was the question asked in the forum title.

I'm not looking to argue with you at all, I know exactly what you are saying and I agree with you, and I am pretty sure that you agree with me after pointing out that "noone in this thread has even implied that swinging a blade will miraculously fix their swing". Everything I have said is stating that they won't miraculously improve your swing, they won't even do it via non-miraculous means! So to sum this whole thing up,
  • Yes blades will give you more feedback as to where on the clubface you are striking the ball than game improvement irons.
  • No they won't improve your swing.
Mate, I reckon we've got it nailed

Ditto.

The extra feeling they provide can be quite helpful in helping YOU to fix your swing.

    • Day 96 (18 Mar 24) - Continued work with the Divot Board with the GW and hard foam balls.  Focused on small target/small miss…setup to hit target about 30yds out - success if it hit within 6’ circle of target, fail if outside.  Had decent success averaging about 3 out of 4 (hitting in groups of four).

    • I'm relieved someone finally defined hiking. I was giddy when I saw these new TPI videos a day or so after they dropped. Very easy to understand the problem and solution the way they have presented it. Been working on fixing this for about a year and a half now. It's nice to be able to call it something so communication becomes easy.  I was working on more lateral and up too, but just having someone define it clearly in video form was so helpful for me to continue confidently with what I thought was wrong and how I had to fix it.  My conceptual error here was just trying to rotate like a tour pro but without including the necessary forward pressure/weight shift associated with enough lateral and upward motion of the pelvis.  This video is great too, as is Greg Rose.
    • Day 2.    couple mins of rolling putts end over end.    10 mins of Slow, mirror work, working on starting the downswing and impact wrist positions. Hit a couple balls into the net after.    Then finished with a couple chips to see if I could repeat what I worked on yesterday.
