ProV1's - Enough Already

OK... this is a little bit of a rant...

Why the hell does every two bit hack of a golfer with a little money need to play these balls. 90% of golfers out there won't see any significant difference between a ProV1 and say an NXT Tour, HX Bite, or Top-Flite Gamer for that matter. So why pay double the price? I know some people have money to piss away, but it just doesn't make any sense to me. Especially if you're a 14 handicap slicer... go play a frigging low spin ball that'll reduce that slice and cost less than half the price. Maybe I'm overreacting, but it just drives me nuts seeing so many people extol the greatness of a ball that probably isn't all that suited to thier game or one that they can't tell the difference between it and any other ball in the first place.

Marketing, marketing, marketing. I saw a thread somewhere that talked about which brands are bad about "brainwashing" golfers. Titleist has to be number one with the ProV line of balls.

my thoughts exactly. thats why i like to play with Precept Laddie X's. $19.99 for 24 balls. i think its ridiculous when i see all these amateur golfers who will only buy brand new ProV's to play with. give me a break. i cant tell the difference between the Precept Laddie X and a ProV at all.

I'm a 14 handicap (not a slicer) who plays Pro V1's. Perhaps a less expensive ball will perform just as well for me but why should you care? Golf is my hobbie and I'll buy the balls and equipment I damn well please.

I can sort of see your point but, I tend to prefer softer balls because otherwise during putting it feels like a rock. I can certainly tell between different types of ball but not brands, or models per se. A bit like champagne, I know when I'm tasting swill or when it is good stuff but I couldn't tell you much of a difference between a '88 Krug and a '95 Krug

I tend to only use Pro V1s on shorter par 3s, anything less than a 6 iron and/or if it is playing off an elevated tee box down onto a green.

An ex-girlfriend of mine lived beside a golf course and her garden ran down the length of a par 5. Her garage was full of golf balls and she'd let me take sacks of them home with me when I'd go over to see her. She was even kind enough to arrange them by brand. This was 6yrs ago and I've not bought a golf ball since. It was a good chance for me to try out lots of different types of golf balls.

I agree with the statement about the ProV vs the NXT Tour.

I don't agree that all 14 handicappers are slicers.

You really should pick your ball based on your spin needs as the driving distance on each ball is not that varried accross the entire industry. I know that the more greens I miss the more control I need around the green. I also know that the ProV is not the only ball that can give me the spin I need to get up and down on a hard green. Plus there is the entire issue, for us low ball hitters, of actually NEEDING spin off the driver (assuming we don't hit the bananna ball). So good rant.....but I only half agree...

I have ProV1s that I practice my wedges/putting with. I like the feel. They seem to stop on the green for me, versus the rocks from the range or the balls I actually play.

However, I use TM Burners when I play which have medium spin. When they hit the ground, I get craters on the green or just off of the fringe with wedges. I cannot imagine how the ProV1s will react.

I am not brave enough to hit a $4 ball into the trees for someone to take.

Easy fellas... I never meant to imply that all 14 cappers were slicers... all I was saying is that someone who is a 8, 12, 16, etc. probably doesn't see all benefits a ProV has to offer. I was also noting that someone who has trouble with side spin (hookers and slicers) might be better off with lower spinning balls like NXT Extremes, HX Hots, and Bridgestone e6s. Certainly many 14+ cappers are straight hitters... and ProV's might be right for some 18 cappers who maybe lack distance, but have a great short game or wedge game, or need the extra feel or spin... but, I KNOW for a FACT that many of the people who play ProV's do so not because it makes them better, but for other reasons (ego, money no issue, advertising, player X plays them, image, etc.). Like I said, my post was a rant, but I stand by the premise that Prov's are over used by MANY (not all) people who don't need them and maybe aren't even suited for them.

I bought 12 dozen mint pro-v1 for $150. Hacks like me can play tour balls and not worry about draining a $5 ball in the drink or slicing one deep in the woods.

I dont play pro Vs unless I find them, but I play tour balls pretty exclusivley. I do definetely notice a difference off the clubface I dont care what anyone says. Honestly I notice the different feel of a distance ball probbaly off the putter face more than anything.

But why do you care, I mean i sort of agree with the sentiment that its great bad players play good balls and leave them there for me to find.

If your gonna rant about something rant about people getting down on the ground and lining up their third putt for triple bogey like it was a birdie putt for the masters.......and then missing making me wait all the while

I agree with your point here. In fact, I disliked Pro V1's a couple of years ago when I was learning to play and didn't hit straight. Higher spinning balls exaggerated my slice/hook and a distance ball better suited my game.

Your post implied that 14 handicaps are hacks and only expert golfers should play quality balls. I'm tired of that type of BS.

I'm a 14, and I fade the ball. Sometimes I slice it. I play Pro v's. I'm not on the green in regulation very often. I rely on wedges and putter to have a decent round. I love the feel off both. That's why I play them.
