Project X flexes - please help!

Hi! New member here. Have just bought a new set of AP2's with Project X 5.5 shafts. Got fitted for them but am convinced that the shafts are just too soft for me.

Am 6ft 5 tall and play off 4. Driver SS is around 110mph and i hit my six iron around 175.

The new irons are stunning. Due to the fit the irons are 1.5" longer and 3 deg upright. Expected this because of my height but due to the sheer length am convinced that the shafts have been softened dramatically. To hit these straight at the mo I have to play a 3/4 type nudge shot. Whenever I give it close to 100% I get a massive high draw. Would the 6.0 or even 6.5 project x suit me much better? How much difference does the extra length make to the shaft? The shaft feels like a regular to me!!

Well I am no clubfitter but since your shafts are 1.5 inches over standard then they are pretty soft flexes. When you hit the massive high draw that sounds like you are ballooning it. 6.0 and maybe 6.5 is probably right for you but there is no way of really knowing unless you can hit the different flexes. I'd suggest going back to the place where you bought them and say you think you got the wrong flex and get re fitted. That would be the only true way of knowing which flex is right.

Many thanks for the quick response. Yes I am ballooning them either straight or these massive humping great high draws!!! Am thinking that the 6.5 might be best and when the extra length etc is taken into this may may bring it closer to a 6.0.

If you were fit, why don't you trust the 5.5s? You should have been able to see what was going on then. I doubt that the lengthening significantly changed the performance characeristics - and if it does, I'm sure True Temper and a reasonable clubfitter would know this and account for it. What's wrong with a high draw? Is it more of a hook?

That all being said, I play a 6.0 and have about the same numbers as you. While tempo and other things can matter, too, you should be pretty much right in the middle of the 6.0 range.

Based on the info which the pro had he thought the 5.5 would be best. I had a nagging doubt at the time and wish I'd gone to the 6. Basically I was kitted out based on the machine data in the shop. The reality hit home when out on the course. The draws are starting slightly left of target and going extremely high with a BIG draw. Wouldn't say that the shots are flat snap hooks though. I

Well if i remember right the 6.0 is for 180 6 iron carry, so if those soften just a tad, they seem perfect for you.
Edit: Also I always go with a stiffer shaft for irons, as it seems to have much better control for me, and pretty much no distance lost. Like iacas said, try your tempo too.

many people with project x complain about them being boardy so my vote is to get some 6.0's and see how they work out.

Thanks again. Sounds like the 6.0's could be the way to go!!!! Has anybody tried both the 5.5 and the 6.0 and is there a significant difference between them?

Well if i remember right the 6.0 is for 180 6 iron carry, so if those soften just a tad, they seem perfect for you.

That's interesting. On the course I'll hit the 6 iron 175-180 but generally closer to 175. According to the machine I was using I was actually hitting it 180-182 so am now a bit confused as to why I was told that the 5.5 was right for me.

I agree...adding that 1.5" would soften them up...unless they were freaked out at a 5.5 with the extra length. Most likley not.
I was hitting the 5.5 with them .5" over and had them flighted to that stiffness. no problem with them. You should talk to the guys that put them together for you.

According to the manufacturer of the shafts, if your swing speed is in the overlapping area between shaft flexes (between, say 5.5 and 6.0), you should get the lower (5.5) if you want more distance, or go higher (6.0) if you want more accuracy. Seems like a no brainer. I'd sacrafice distance for accuracy any day.

Thanks for the advice. I'll check with them. Am 99.9% certain that the 5.5 shaft was just put in and not tweaked at all so what I've prob

ably ended up with is with softer a version! Frustrating!!

if your playing proj. x flighted 5.5's, then the extra length will not matter because all the shafts are tested for that frequency. Call up the place where you have been fitted, they probly made a mistake, the shafts are not going to be more flexible if they are longer, because project x goes by frequency, not common aliaus' like "regular, stiff, x, ect."

Have just bought a new set of X-22 Tours Project X 6.0 shafts.

Am 6ft 6 tall and play off 5. Driver SS is around 115mph and i hit my six iron around 180 so we are a pretty close match (hope you don't mind me doing a c+p of your words).

Due to the fit my irons are 1.0" longer and 3 deg upright.

I found the same thing when I tested with the 5.5's. 6.5's didn't feel right for me when I wanted to hit low punches etc and didn't feel as good in my 8-PW.

So I went with the 6.0's - Try the 6.0's I think the 5.5's with the lenght you have them at are probably not right (though within spec)... remember fitters can get it wrong sometimes as well!
