The Nike Ignite are not bad clubs and can probably be found new really cheap. That set comes with a 3Hybrid. The irons are not too bulky either (like I feel the Sumo irons are). They are still forgiving, though. Prior to last year Rory Sabattini was actually playing the Ignite set on tour. My second recommendation of the Nike sets listed would be the Slingshot 4D, just because the irons are not too large. The OSS set is not bad, but they are bigger and the people I know with them have replaced them quickly as they got better.

There are 1-2 sets from just about every equipment manufacturer that is good for new players (except maybe Titleist). It might be worth looking up previous years Golf Digest Hot List (I think 2008 info can still be found online) and look at Game Improvement and Super Game Improvement irons. 2008 list: http://www.golfdigestpromotions.com/features/hotlist/

I would recomend you try to find a golf retailer or driving range that you can try some of these irons out before just purchasing them. Not all clubs are the same and what you like another new player might hate.

I started out with the Slingshot OSS clubs. I really had no complaints with them. I definitely hit my new irons better but I was fitted for them and alot of the flaws in my swing have been fixed. When I first started I also got the OSS sw and actually did real well out of the sand for a beginner.

The only comment I can make on the other clubs is if you go with the sumos - get the full iron set. I like hybrids but I think going with 4-7 hybrid and only have an 8+9 iron is a bit weak. I know for me - the less I rely on my hybrids, the better I can hit my irons.

From what I've read online, you should definitely try the 4D's if you're looking to buy Nike irons. Why would you only commit to one company though? I went shopping for clubs on the weekend and I had my mind set on the Callaway X-20's since the end of summer because of all the reviews and articles I had read. I walked out of there with a set of TaylorMade R7's. Although the X-20's felt good, they just didn't compare to how smooth the R7's felt. To top it off the R7's were on sale for $550 so I was stoked! I'd definitely go to a golf store where you can try out the clubs before you buy them.

Good luck!

    • It's been a little more than a year since I can last remember hitting golf balls and today I just got my second cortisone injection in 11 months. I thought maybe shortly after the first injection I was going to be able to start playing again with therapy but the pain while doing my backswing past halfway just didn't subside like just lifting my hands up in the air did. So today the Orthopedic surgeon put more in the backside of the shoulder than before to address the tendon more. I'm going to try therapy for another 3 months and if I  can't swing the club without pain then I think surgery is going to be my next option.
    • I was just down visiting family in southern California and we played a couple rounds of golf. I hit my ball into the deep rough near some tree's and my cousin's husband offered me his Sim 2 Rescue Hybrid to try out. And I felt the same way, wow! I loved it, it also had a Pure DTX grip on it which I loved. As soon as I got back home, I ended up buying two used Calloway Rogue X hybrids, 3 and 5. So far I've only tested them out at the range, but I love them. They're much more forgiving than irons for me.
