What's your favourite (non-instructional) golf book?

I just finished a very funny and interesting golf book called "Maybe it Should Have Been a Three-Iron" (also known as "Four Iron in the Soul") by Lawrence Donegan (1998).

If you've ever dreamed of being a pro golfer but weren't good enough and thought caddying for someone who could play would do instead, then check it out. The author spent a year as a caddy to a European Tour journeyman. Personally, I can't recall the last time I laughed out loud so often while reading a book (especially a golf book!).

Has anyone else read a good (non-instructional) golf book lately?

Hard to tell which is my 'favorite', but I love all of John Feinstein's golf books. I just ready "Caddie for Life" about Bruce Edwards and really enjoyed it. I am currently reading "The Kingdom of Shivas Irons" by Michael Murphy. It's the followup to the classic "Golf in the Kingdom". It's set about 30 years after this first book, but might be even stranger than it. One of the most enjoyable non-fiction golf books I've read ever is Dan Jenkin's book "Dead Solid Perfect", about a journeyman professional golfer. It a very funny and enjoyable read.

I agree....the Jenkins book, Dead Solid Perfect is a fun read. It's a great lighthearted golf tale that will get you laughing and wanting to tee it up at the same time. I'm gonna look around the house and see if I can find my copy to re-read. It's been several years.

David Feherty's books are both quite humourous, Rick Riely's "Who's your Caddie" is very funny, both of Peter Jacobson's books are well worth your time and lastly Gary McCord's "Range Ball in a Box of Titleist". All of these books are an easy read and once you get started you don't want to put them down.

My personal favorite is Paper Tiger. It's a great reminder for those of us, who are mediocre who think we could actually make it as a pro. Great story about a writer who wants to see if he can qualify for a pro tournament.

I found Who's Your Caddy to be a pretty good read.

I had some time to kill this afternoon and stopped by B&N.; Checked out Greatest Game Ever Played since I really enjoyed the movie (just got it for Christmas). It's a pretty long book but from what I read, it should be a very good one. Not 100% factual as I've been told but it's a good story nonetheless. I left without it but as I sit here typing, I wish that I would have brought it home.

The Greatest Game Ever Played is a wonderful book. Two Years In St. Andrews by George Peper is great. I highly recommend both.

I read "The Grand Slam: Bobby Jones; America and the Story of Golf" a few months ago and enjoyed that too.

Rick Reilly's "Shanks for Nothing." Hilarious. Not necessarily my favorite, but a great read.

"Chicken Soup For The Golfes Soul" is excellent. "Dead Solid Perfect" was made into a movis starring Dennis Quaid.

Good recommendations. For serious reading, I recommend "Arnie & Jack" by Ian O'Connor (thank God that Barbara and Winnie prevented their husbands from killing each other) and "The Walter Hagen Story" by The Haig, Himself (his life story is as amazing as the movies depict---he could have been a Major League baseball player since he was the star pitcher for the Rochester Ramblers but he turned down a contract with the Philadelphia Athletics because he said that he could win more money playing golf and hustling, and he was right!).

For humor, all the books recommended here are good--including yours for "Dead Solid Perfect". I like a wry, British sense of humor so PG Wodehouse's stories about the Oldest Member are fun. Every golf club has one or more characters who are like the Oldest Member, and they love to dispense "words of wisdom" on golf---------------and life.
