I can't be the only one here that pulls so hard for Freddie to win one more time. He gets so close and clearly can't handle the pressure. It really gets me upset.

He's such a cool guy on this tour and you can tell the CBS crew was pulling for him this weekend as well. Obviously Nantz because he's Freddie's old roommate but even Faldo and Kostis were pulling for him. I can't believe he hit such a bad second shot on 18.

It really hurts to see him get so close and not be able to get it done. Just had to rant. There must be some other upset Freddie fans on here today, right?

Freddy's always been my favorite player but stuff like this is just to be expected. I'd love to see him win again but he's 49 with a bad back although he has what I think is the greatest golf swing ever. Let's hope he has a great season but I've heard he's already getting excited about the senior tour. That'll be awesome to watch!

When he hit the tee shot on 18 I thought, he's got a good shot at birdie. Then I saw his angle to the green. Even though his drive was long, he a tough shot due to the Eucs, drifting into his vision.

There was an odd item in the news about him. His estranged (4-years, but never divorced) wife just died of breast cancer this week. The item suggested this affected him, as you would expect if they were still friendly, and he was quoted as saying she was a "beautiful peson" or words to similar effect.

Then, the news item said he was still not allowed in their former home.

Easy to see why this development would have affected him this week, making his play both more remarkable and more touching - but hard to understand exactly what was going on.

I was pulling for him. Gotta admit, I've got that 2d shot that he hit on 18 in my bag though........

Nice recovery on his 3d, but too little, too late.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

I heard Jim Nantz say Freddie was 49 and a half.

It sounded funny, but he has six months to win on the regular tour before becoming a senior.

I hope he does it... Maybe another Masters??????

I heard Jim Nantz say Freddie was 49 and a half.

Unfortunately, I think Freddie missed that boat. The 2006 Masters was his to lose and he did. Man, that was the heartbreaker of all time for me. He REALLY had a chance to become the oldest to win the Masters.

It was the same issue as this week. Those 6-10 footers are just murder for him. You never know though. I'm just impressed with how long he still is for 49. They don't call him Boom-Boom for nothing. Only 1 of 3 guys to hit the 17th green in two yesterday. Not bad for an almost "Senior player."

He seems to still have great flexibility for his age.

I was pissed by his second at eighteen. He has that shot, and just put a bad swing on it as if he wasn't committed to what he was doing. He is and always will be a class act.

I was pulling for him too! His third shot at the 72nd was the first time in a while that I actually believed he was gonna hole it (while in the air). Close but no cigar :(

I wanted Freddie to win as well and his 2nd on 18 looked like a shank. His short range putting stroke is hard to watch though. His full swing shots are pieces of art.

You are right---Freddie is still playing well in spite of his bad back and his age. He should kick butt on the Champions Tour, but they will not be pushovers, either. I remember when Ray Floyd won on the regular Tour and the Senior Tour in the same year. I am not sure if Fred Funk did that, but any one who does deserves high praise. Freddie is capable of doing it, but he has to eliminate the one or two mistakes that kill him on the regular Tour.

He needs to work on smoothing that stroke out on short putts. I think if he can overcome that, he'll see more victories.

I checked it out. Fred Funk did win on both tours in 2007---Mayakoba Golf Classic at Riviera Maya-Cancun on the regular tour and the Turtle Bay Classic on the Champions Tour. Personally, I remember two of his 8 victories on the regular Tour. In 1992, my son and I were at the Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links, and were watching him hit balls on the practice range. He was the only one there. We asked his caddy who he was, and when they left, the caddy came over and gave John a ball, and said, "Freddie wants you to have this, and thanks for watching." He missed the cut, but won the next week in the Houston Open for his first victory!
In 2005, he won The Players, and that was an amazing win considering the strength of the field, and that he is not long off the tee.

That would be pretty cool but I'd be happy to see him healthy and winning on the senior tour

you nailed it, Freddie broke our heart again... The absolute worst was the 2006 Masters... Nobody hit the ball like Freddie that week but his putting was terrible... When he three-jacked it at 14 that was the first and only time I ever stood up and yelled in disgust watching a golf tournament... He hits the ball so pure with his irons... And does anybody have a more fluid, easy to watch swing? Even his bunker shots look syrupy... Hated to see him lose yesterday...

I have been a Freddy fan since I can remember; too bad he pushed his second on 18. Meh!

I remember watching him and Corey Pavin in a sudden death match in a tournament (can't remember which one) about 10+ years ago. Corey has the honors and hole-in-ones a par 3; slam dunk. Freddy then hits and his ball lands literally 2 inches from the hole and stops...I'll remember that for a while.

He ended up losing that one too :\...but I love that buttery swing!

    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
    • Very much so. I think the intimidation factor that a lot of people feel playing against someone who's actually very good is significant. I know that Winged Foot pride themselves on the strength of the club. I think they have something like 40-50 players who are plus something. Club championships there are pretty competitive. Can't imagine Oakmont isn't similar. The more I think about this, the more likely it seems that this club is legit. Winning also breeds confidence and I'm sure the other clubs when they play this one are expecting to lose - that can easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
    • Ah ok I misunderstood. But you did bring to light an oversight on my part.
    • I was agreeing with you/jumping off from there.
