At what distance to you begin to "expect" to make putts?

you obviously expect to make a 3 ft putt, but when your at 30 ft you dont so much expect to make the putt, but you just want to get it close so you can tap in the next one. so, at what distance does the thought "i really should make this" become "just get it close"?

For me, it's 5-6 feet. I expect to make those, especially if it's straight. I feel as long as I read it right, it's going in.

I have that confidence because of a putting drill I do once a week. I mark out a straight putt, 5 feet from the hole. I don't go home until I make a 100 in a row. If I miss one, I start over. Most of the time, I make it through the first time. It's a very good drill for confidence, and grooving your putter stroke. When I'm standing over a putt of that length, many time I've stood there and said "No problem, I've made thousands of these".

Cheers, Allan

Obviously, I would like all putts to be within 3 feet, but if I'm inside 5 feet I usually expect to make the putt unless it's a severe slope or something. I usually still feel comfortable with putts insdie 10 feet, but outside of that I pretty much do not even expect putts to drop. I've always been an agressive putter, so on longer putts it's always my goal to get the putt to the hole which at least gives it a chance. Recently, many of those putts have also ended up a few feet by, leaving me another putt longer than I would prefer.

I only expect to make gimmes. Seriously. I may be the worst putter I've ever seen. It literally holds my game back 3-5 shots per round...at least!

I won't be surprised if I make a 5 footer, but I never expect it. Every putt is an adventure with me. I'm disappointed (and pissed) if I miss a 3 footer, but that seems to happen fewer and fewer times now. I'm slowly improving! Maybe this year I'll 'expect' to hit 5 footers.

Inside ten feet, I'm not really trying to lag it within a 2 ft. circle anymore, I'm trying to get it real close to give it a good chance of dropping.

If I'm using my putter, I expect to make it.

Thats the attitude all the best players have. I agree, if i didn't expect to make it, then i would ovbiously lack confidence, which will never help you in anything you ever do. Golf is so much a mental game these days its crazy, if you don't picture positive results in your mind, you'll never reach them.

I expect to make any putt within 6'. I normally practice putts from 10' away or more, so for me, a 5-6' putt is a tap-in.

Maybe I'm putting out of my head, but inside 20ish feet I expect to make the putt. Inside 10 feet I'm really disappointed if it doesn't drop. I'm really disappointed a lot.

If I'm inside 12 feet I nearly always expect to make it -- not that I do make all of these. Green irregularities, big swings in the break & bad reads make that impossible.

I suppose I'm going to make 80-85% of the well read putts inside 5 feet. More some days & less others. Today I had 26 putts. Of course I hit nearly no greens in regulation & had a good chipping day, but I literally missed only 1 or 2 putts inside of 10 feet.

I agree with most guys about 12', but the best putters I have played with are genuinely surprised when they miss a 25 footer. I chuckled one time when the guy acted surpirsed, but on the next hole he dropped one from 35' and I quickly realized that you need to have that confidence if you want to be a solid putter.

If I ever try that drill, you will never hear from me again. Ever.

I expect to make 3 footers. I try to make < 12 footers, anything outside that I'm trying to get it close. This is completely the wrong attitude, and putting is definitely the weakest part of my game, but I'm working on it.

6-foot putts are tap-ins?? Dave Peltz accumulated data that show pros only make 50% of 6-foot putts! At 10-feet his data shows pros only making 10%.

Either this forum is populated by a lot of pro golfers or amateur golfers with great (but unrealistic) expectations.

Golf TV coverage is focused on the leaders -- the pro's who are playing & putting well that week -- but Pelz's data includes the players that don't make it on TV on a given week & these guys aren't making 'em.

The 6' putts a tour player faces are nothing like what I'm up against at our muni, where the greens are realtively slow & the putts much easier to make -- except for the bumpiness this time of year.
