More specifically, Adams Idea A3 Boxer #4 vs. Nickent 4DX Ironwood #4. I already have the Adams #3 and I like it. But I hear that the Nickent is pretty good too. I'm trying to replace my 4 iron(can't hit it too well). Which one would you pick and why?

Nickent.... they're "The King of Hybrids" as they say. At a golf expo I hit the 5DX, 4DX, and 3DX RC hybrids and loved everyone of them. As my first hybrid the 3DX works great. The 4DX had the great feel and was very forgiving.

Adams - no question.
Besides, why not match it to your 3 hybrid? Keep it concistant.

Adams - no question.

I agree... it would seem kind of stupid to mix it up for no reason if you like the Adams.

I haven't hit the Boxer or 4DX... but I have hit my Adams next to my friend's 3DX and both are somewhat similar. They are both workable, both have that smaller non-jumbo look to them. I like mine a little better, but probably only because I am used to it. I think Nickent and Adams lead the hybrid market for a reason, and both are likely fantastic clubs.

I vote Nickent.

I haven't had any recent Adams stuff but I had a Tight Lies 3 and 5 wood that I hated and could never hit so I have a bias against them now. I recently picked up a Nickent 3 utility wood, and a 3 & 4 hybrid and I absolutely love them. Every time I pull them out good things happen. Easy to hit, forgiving and great distance. I can't say enough good things about them. I hit them so well I want to try a Nickent driver now.

Oh, and the 3DX hybrids are on sale for $59.99 most places and are outstanding (I picked one up for the 3h and it hits pretty much the same as my 4DX). Really hard to beat at that price.

I also vote Nickent. I love my 2 hybrid, very easy to hit and very forgiving.

I just recently got the Nickent hybrid at a good price with a stiff steel shaft and I really like it. Very easy to hit and right on target. Almost to the point that I am thinking of my beloved TM burner rescue.

I like both, but went to a nickent 3dx because it had a stiff shaft and I vould get it for $40 last year on super sale. Right now it's been too good to me to think about replacing. Though I might regrip. stock grip is a bit mushy for me.

I play both (A3 #5 and 4DX #4) and they're both great.

don't think you could go wrong with either, really... but i read somewhere that Nickent (the company) may be in trouble... is there any truth to that?

No vote because I have no personal experience with the Adams hybrids.

All I'll offer is that I've played 2 Nickent 3dx's for about a year now, and I wouldn't give them up for anything.

    • This is a loooooong winded narrative so if you don't like long stories, move on. 😉 Our senior club typically gets about 25 new members each year. We lose about 25 members each year for various reasons (moved to FL/AZ, disabled, dead, too expensive). Of the new members, usually 20 have an active GHIN handicap. About 5 each year do not have a GHIN handicap. When they join our club, we give each member a state association membership that includes GHIN handicapping services. We play a series of handicapped tournaments over the summer. When we sign up a new member who does not have a GHIN handicap, we attempt to give them an estimated index until they have sufficient scores posted to have an actual GHIN index.  Our first event typically is around May 15 so, in theory, a new member has about 6 weeks to post a few scores. Posting season in the Mitten starts April 1. Inevitably, several of the unhandicapped individuals seem  to either not play until the first tournament or can't figure out how to enter scores (hey, they are seniors). That situation then leads to my contacting the new member and asking a series of questions: a. Did you ever have a GHIN handicap? If yes, which State and do you recall what it was? b. Do you have an alternate handicap through a non-GHIN handicap service or a league? c. What do you think your average score was last year (for 9 or 18) d. What was your best score last year? Where did you play and which tee was used? e. What do you consider a very good score for yourself? Based on their responses I attempt to give them an index that makes them competitive in the first couple events BUT does not allow them to win their flight in the first couple events. We don't want the new members to finish last and at the same time, we don't want someone with a "20" playing handicap to win the third flight with a net 57. In the event some new member did shoot a net 57, we also advise everyone that we can and will adjust handicaps retroactively when it is clear to us that a member's handicap does not accurately reflect their potential. We don't like to adjust things retroactively and in the 8 years I have chaired the Handicap Committee, we have only done it once. So here are the questions to the mob: Any ideas how to do this better? Any questions one might ask an unhandicapped individual to better estimate their index/handicap? Would it be reasonable to have a new player play once (or more?) without being eligible to place in the money?
