What type of activities do you avoid since you have become more dedicated to your game?

For instance I went to a batting cage last year for a sons birthday party, and progressed into the 90 mph cage. Took about 50 swings overall STUPID..messed my swing up for a month.

Ill hit flies to the kids I coach, but no more hard swinging.

Women and dating.

That's the very reason I quit playing for so many years and know that I've got back into it seriously I have avoided dating. When I was dating someone they had a tendency to make plans for me on the weekends or want to do something when it was perfect golf weather, so (at least for now), I have put my golf game above relationships and it's definately helped - I have nothing else to worry about.

Best decision I ever made...

lol I can totally relate to this!

However, my girl friend now is very supportive of me heading out to the course. :) She doesn't play (yet) but half her family does. Which is why they live in places like San Diego and Las Vegas.

i'm a little surprised that swinging a baseball bat would throw off your golf swing ... the two swings are similar in many respects.

Not really. Anyone going from playing softball or baseball to golf has to learn a whole new set of fundamentals and break some ingrained habits. I'm not an expert on the baseball swing, but I've known too many guys who tried to play both games at the same time, and most of them found that they just couldn't reconcile the two swings. If they focused on golf, then they struggled with baseball and vice versa. Just what I've observed from experience.

As far as the OP's question, I've never known any particular activity that I've avoided for the betterment of my golf game. My game did suffer from getting married (most of you young kids will one day find this out the hard way ), but that was from a severe reduction in playing time, not from a specific activity. Since I retired, the game has come back to some extent, but now the body isn't what it once was.

I went from swinging a 50 mph pitching machine up to a 90 and hit at least 25 balls in the ninety. Having not played or attempted to swing at a 90mph baseball in 5 years; my lats delts biceps everything was sore for a week or two. I didnt hurt myself, but the muscle memory was completley lost.

The baseball swing starts with the legs, while the golf swing starts with the hips (I hope

). Baseball, hockey, and tennis are similar to the golf swing for the most part. To the OP, I stopped playing some other sports to become more serious about golf. There wasn't enough time for everything.

Women and dating.

A number of people blame my golf addiction for my decision to give up serious dating. It actually wasn't because of this, but for other reasons. Besides, up until recently, I was too young for a girlfriend. But not having one has certainly has helped my golf. I gave up what little amount of video games I played on my own. I'll still play a friend's Wii or other systems when I'm at their houses, but it's rare. I don't even have a desktop computer at my place anymore.

Women and dating.

LOL...been there, done that.

Im not sure that I could put golf above personal relationships, but I wouldnt give up golf just because of some girlfriend. Id explain to her right off the bat how important golf is to me and if she cant respect that, well, she wouldnt be a girlfriend for very long. Me personally, I used to go to a lot of local motocross and motorcycle/ATV flat track races, but since I started playing golf again I havent gone. Ive got quite a few friends who are pretty serious about MX, but they usually race on Sundays and thats my day to play golf. The races go from 9:00am-4:00pm and Im not going to pay $7 to spend a couple hours at the track, so the past 2 years I havent gone. Thats going to change this year though. Im going to play golf on Saturdays instead of Sundays, so that I can go to the races again. I want to support my friends because they are important to me and I kinda feel bad that I pretty much abandoned them. The only thing that worries me is that I could see myself going to the races again, getting the urge to race MX and hanging up my golf game. Today I watched the supercross race from Toronto and I started to get the urge to get back into motorcross. Once Im actually at the track and am around the sound of race bikes and smell the exhaust scent of race gas, I might be a goner.

Ditto here, never had a problem going between the two. I don't even understand how they would affect each other. Over half of MLB players play golf in their spare time. Everyone is different though.

imo the baseball swing promotes a throwing of the shoulder motion which produces an over the top golf swing.

This causes pull hooks for me and HUGE Misses. If im playing golf ive had my baseball swing absolutely ruined, Im falling backwards when swinging etc. Then i go play golf after going to the cages and its just ugly.

Drinking to get drunk.

I have to admit I pretty much gave up drinking for golf as well. I played a round a few years ago on a day with temps nearing 100* and I brought a cooler with 30 beers. I drank most of them that day and didn't realize it until about the 15th hole or so which had the fairway slanted away from me and when I went to hit ball I fell over. That was the last time I ever drank on the golf course (except a beer here and there...)

I quit playing softball, mostly due to time issues and scheduling the kids' activities. However, when I was playing both regularly, I noticed that I would tend to pull more golf shots. I think the two swings are very similar but with golf the body is more forward, so if you use a pure baseball swing you tend to end up with bad weight displacement and pull shots.
If you play enough of each, it probably doesn't affect one or the other as much. That's just being a good athlete.

I played baseball (OF) for 18 years, and then took up golf. IMO you cannot do both, one swing is reactive, the other is proactive. Most of the MLB players who golf are pitchers like Smoltz, Maddux, etc..

For those few who can regularly hit baseballs and golf balls well, you are very rare and talented, that's all I can say.
