What are the pros and cons of different ball positions with different irons. I need to know the best ball positions with my irons. Right now, I think I have it too far forward. Input is appreciated!

Well, my ball flight varies and so does my draw/fade because I'm currently working on swing plane. I hit my drives high (then again I use a 13 degree driver), my irons are at pretty good height. I hit it straight for the most part, but I guess I play a fade.

What are good things and bad things about every different kind of ball position.

There are two basic schools of thought about ball position on normal shots.

1. Club specific- Wedges in the middle of your stance and your ball position moves more forward toward the front foot as the clubs get longer until the driver is played just inside the front heel. (Tiger Woods and most PGA Pros)

2. Left heel- All clubs played just inside the left heel. (Jack Nicklaus)

Like I said above a very high percentage of good players and professionals use the first method. The only problem with that method is because the BP moves depending on the length of the club, it can be tricky to get it correct all the time.

The Nicklaus method is good because your position is the same all the time but you have to have great hands to pull it off.

Ball position is tough, basically I believe its best to fault on the side of too far forward. No normal shot should be played with the ball back of the middle of your stance.

It is something I work on all the time as do the pros. It is an easy thing to get out of whack. I use two sticks or clubs to check it on the range and when I am at home I use the tile floor in my kitchen.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

Funny thing with me, if I need to hit a higher fade, I play it off my left heel, open the face a bit and usually hit it great. When I play for a draw I make the proper adjustments and usually hit it good. When I play for a normal, fairly straight iron shot, I never hit it as good as when I setup to work the ball. I would be way more consistent if I mostly played for one or the other instead of a straight ball with a traditional setup.

I'm down to a 10 handicap. At this rate, I'll get to scratch at 90 years old!

I have an issue with hitting the ball too high in the air. I tend to hit the ball with my irons too high, my balls generally go higher than anyone in my foursome, and I also hit the ball fat pretty much every time...sometimes fatter than others.

Is the ball going really high in the air because I am hitting it fat?

The issue with the high ball flight comes in when I am playing in the wind...the wind kills any chance I have to play well much of the time.
