What exactly is impact tape and how does it work? I think I've got the general idea, you put something on the face of your club so you can see where you made contact? If this is the case, do you guys only use it on the range or sometimes even out on the course? Has it been a useful training aid for many of you?

If you can't feel where you're making contact, you'd be surprised just how off center some of your strokes are. Especially with a big faced driver. Try using it and you'll get a feel whether you're making heel or toe contact. Sometimes I think I hit a shank but I hit it off the toe (you don't need an aid to figure that out though.) Fat and thin are pretty obvious from ball flight. When I play, I usually look at my clubface to associate what I felt to face contact location.

Impact tape is a pain. Impact spray, you have to deal with the guk and is not so good for the environment. I've also tried talcum powder and lipstick with not so great results. If you're hitting of grass with irons, the above methods are less effective but you don't need them because usually the grass leaves a good mark.

No need for it. With your MP-57s you should be able to feel exactly where the ball hits the face on any given shot.

Or - Just clean your club face and hit the ball. You can easily see where the ball hit the face - if you can't tell by feel.

And using it on the course is against the rules of golf.

I use it and find it enlighting. You'll be amazed at where you think you hit the club face and where you actually did. It really can help identify what's going on in your swing.

related question -- when on the range with a driver, I'll see where the range ball hits the face pretty easily. It leaves a mark.

The problem I have is how to instantly clean the driver face to get the ball mark off so when I hit the next ball the mark is easy to discern. Any advice on how best to do this? Just wiping with my finger or glove or even a shirt sleeve, damp towel, won't do it.

You can also use regular old masking tape. The impact will not show up as much as with impact tape, but you can still see where the impact point is and it's far cheaper than impact tape. As others have said, using impact tape on grass range (or dirt ranges around here most of the time) makes the tape not work as well or last as long. When I'm struggling with clubs I'll take some masking tape to see where impact on clubface is. With irons that's not much of a problem because I can really feel it with my MP-60's, but on driver it's nice to know.

+1 - Dampen one end of your towel and wipe the club head clean before you take your shot. You will see where you're hitting the ball on the face.

See my thread earlier about getting swing back, or check this URL above for an example.

I find it helps sometimes when I'm not sure which side of the sweet spot the bad contact is happening. (Although the example I posted felt mostly 90% good, give or take a few too thin, one el hoselo and a couple off center.)

I don't use it much. But sometimes I clean my clubface with the glove so I can see fresh marks ... Or the hosel if it's going off there. That always leaves a mark.

I've been using impact tape the last couple range sessions. I'd been working on a slice problem I had and the impact tape showed everything near the heel. Made a few adjustments and its showing near center.

The pro at the range gave me about half a roll for free.
