I tee off alot w/ a 3 wood becuase im much more accurate then with my driver. Generally I tee it up about a 1/2 inch, so my ? is when doing this should i still be playing the ball slightly ahead of center in my stance or more in the middle. What is the correct ball position for teeing off with a wood ? Thanks

I play it the same place I do when I hit it from the fairway. For me, that's just forward of the middle of my stance, but I play it back farther than most golfers do. I don't tee it quite that high either, no more than 1/4" above the grass, so it just looks like a really good lie. I don't like it to look like it's on a tee... makes me try and scoop it.

Much of it comes down to what will produce the best results. As a general rule, if you are teeing up a wood it should be placed a little ahead of center as you described. You want to make sure that you are hitting up on the ball so there should be a spot to accomplish that. Although, if you place it too close to the front foot, you will come through late and produce a hook, too close to the middle and you won't get the hands through and produce a slice. There should be a happy medium there that will get the results.

Some of it has to do with how you swing and the flex in the shaft. I will usually have my 3-wood teed up a little further forward than my driver. Mostly, this is because the shaft of the 3 is a little stiffer than the driver and it just works out the best.

If you are already seeing good results, keep doing what you are doing. Easiest thing is to grab a bucket of balls and play with it a little unitl you find that perfect spot.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

When teeing off with a fairway wood, I play the ball slightly ahead of center and I tee the ball so that the top of the clubface is even with the equator of the ball.

When I tee a fairway wood that high, I tend to pop the ball up. I need it to look more like a normal lie. Never been able to hit a ball teed too high... even with my driver I tee the ball lower than most players.

I tee my 3 wood up just above the grass and hit it well of the tee. If I tee it too high it leads to a wicked hook sometimes. Also have been teeing the driver much lower, ....much straighter, better rollout also.

I don't have a 3 wood, but I used to and what I would do is tee it up so you can lay a tee down and the shaft would fit just between the ball and the ground without touching the ball. what that does is it gives me the perspective that the ball is on the ground when it is resting just off of it, and I get a clean hit every time.

now the position of the ball should be the same as the driver or a bit closer to the middle of your stance (not by much), as you still want the same contact. What I don't get is why people hit a 3W if it's pretty much just like a driver in distance, with a smaller head. If you aren't hitting your driver good, and hitting your 3W good, get the same driver as your 3W. I personally do not have a 3W, I think it's just another club that you can mishit. Hope this helps and sorry about the rant lol.

Lower handicappers as yourself would benefit from a 3 wood if you are hitting your drives 250 plus. Less rollout and generally much straighter is the 3 wood, won't run it through the fairway on shot placement holes. Plus there is no sweeter sound than a 3 wood hit on the screws.

you should be able to manipulate your swing when its above the normal ball position.

Why would I want to manipulate my swing on the teeing ground? Just commenting on my trial and error and finally realizing I was teeing the ball too high...for 3 wood and Driver.

tee it low, so it looks like a perfect lie in the fairway (so I see the same thing I'm used to when I usually hit the 3wood).

If that works for you, go with it. Theres lots of different ways to accomplish the same thing in this game, so if teeing it lower works for you, I see no reason to change.

If you go take a lesson with any golf pro though, they will tell you the exact same thing that I said. The main reason for teeing it high like that is so that even if you come up on the shot a little bit, you will still hit the ball at least in the middle of the clubface, instead of topping it. Like I said though, if your way is working for you, Im not going to sit here and tell you its wrong.

First of all I don't top shots. Secondly, "any" pro will not say something like that just because yours may do so. A lot depends on what type of 3W you're using. Does it have deep or shallow face? High or low CG? Offset or not? What is your normal swing and ball flight?

There are many more factors involved than just the number on the club. You've stated things like this before, that whatever your pro says is the gospel. You need to understand that there are very few absolutes in the game of golf. If everybody did the same thing the same way every time we wouldn't need this DB. Suggestion is fine, but saying that your way is the only way is a bit naive.

Hogwash. C'mon, shouldn't you know better? I dare say no good player I've ever seen has teed the ball up more than a little bit off the tee. Top of the clubface is getting into the "too high" territory for most of the better players I know.

And I, like FourPutt, don't top the ball off the tee.

I play it off the heel of my front foot and hit down on the ball. But that's just me...Sometimes I don't even tee it up...lol

The correct way is to tee it up as low as possible, giving you a perfect lie. However, if you're a high handicapper with a swing that doesn't bottom out low enough to the ground, you will top it. Teeing it higher allows you to play to your misses, but is pretty much a poor long term strategy. Getting used to teeing it super low takes time and practice. You'll hit it fat, and you'll top it. Eventually though, you will begin to hit it true, and at that point, you'll never want to tee it high ever again.

Also in pretty much all woods nowadays, the sweet spot is low on the face. Practice skipping the clubhead off the ground like a stone skipping over water. The ball just happens to get in the way of it.

A quarter inch or so off the ground is perfectly correct as well, and since I like to decrease the chances of hitting it fat, I tend to tee it this high.
