I just dropped my 2 and 4 hybrid and took up the 3 and 4 iron that came with my new set. For some reason, I get more height and more control.

Has anyone gone back to long irons from their hybrids? What kind of versatility would I lose by switching back? Would specialty shots like punches suffer?

thanks for any feedback

I actually think you get more versatility out of the irons. I still keep a 3 iron in the bag most of the time as something of a trouble club, just because I can flight it and work it easier than a hybrid. It's usually the first to go when I need to add another wedge though.

Having said that though, you'll never get me to give up the 2 hybrids that I finally put in the bag. The damn things are just too easy to hit.

In David's bag....

I reach par 5s in 2 far too often with my hybrid to ever take it out of the bag

I threw my clubs into the lake so it's time to start over...

I dropped my 20 and 23 degree Nickent 3dx dc hybrids to return to a 3i and a 4i and don't regret it at all.

I'm a little shorter with the irons (1 degree weaker and shorter shafts being the main reason), but I like the ball flight better. It's more penetrating and not as prone to ballooning (and hooking, both of which were more a function of the shaft, but it wasn't worth it to spend more than the clubs were worth new to reshaft them). I haven't had any problem hitting punches or anything else with the long irons. My gaps are also more consistent having irons all the way up.

That being said, I'm considering a 2h to fill the gap between my 3i and 3w. But that might end up being a MP Fli-hi instead of a true hybrid.

It's all personal preference. Best of luck either way!

I use 2 iron instead of 5 wood. I never use a hybrid, but did try. I felt the hybrid are less control than iron, and less distance than wood. The only reason I think that some people prefer hybrid is because it use a graphite shaft, but i suppose if u got graphite shaft on the long iron, it will feel similar.

What's a hybrid? You mean that people are taking out their long irons and using something else? I'm confused.

I did just make the switch from carrying a 2-iron to a 3-wood instead. They didn't make a 2-iron in the ZM's and I hit them further than my old irons anyway so it wasn't much of an adjustment.

I had a TM 3H and 4H and ended up putting my long irons back in. I hit the hybrids fine and could control them but IMO there is nothing like the feel of a solid iron shot. I also feel like I can work the irons more than the hybrids. Who knows...I may go back to a hybrid but not as long as I am hitting my long irons like I am right now.

The only time I have ever thought I might like to have a long iron in my bag is when I need to hit a low punch shot, but then I got a 2H with a Dynamic Gold S300 shaft and I can hit a great low punch (even with a draw/hook if needed), so now I have no reason to add a long iron back into my bag.

One thing about hybrids is the same model and setup is not right for all players but I do believe that most players could benefit from replacing at least their 3 iron (and longer irons) with one.

I had the traditional hybrid and hated it. It was the x-hybrid with the steel shaft and it seems to exagerate my hook and could not hit it as high as I though I should.

That being said I love my mp fli his. They are forgiving but look like an iron and feel great.

I think hybrids are great for some but I just hated it.

this thread caught my attention because it is the exact opposite of what I did. I took out my 4 and 3 iron and 3 wood, and replaced those irons with a 5 hybrid and the 3 wood with a 17º 2 hybrid. I dropped 2-5 strokes a round just with the switch. My callaway hybrids are amazing! I love them and they are very workable.

I used to carry 3 and 4 hybrids, but as I struggled with my game due to injury last season, I realized that even though I could crush my hybrids, I had become a much better ball striker and could benefit from the "feel" you get playing the irons. I finally gave up playing shortly after Labor Day, and hoped that an extended rest period would cure the shoulder pain. I ended up taking a longer than expected hiatus because I shattered my left wrist in a million pieces while snowboarding in January, then had surgery to insert a plate and 15 screws. Since I knew recovery would be almost like starting from scratch, I put the 3-4 irons back in my bag, and guess what, after 2 weeks of playing again, I'm now crushing them too! While not nearly as consistent or forgiving, the 3-4 irons give you that immediate feedback when you strike the ball, that you just don't get from a hybrid. I'm looking forward to being a low single digit handicapper again soon.

    • after some years experimenting around, I've settled on a mixed bag of mostly Pat Simmons vintage Tiger Sharks (the ones with the blue enamal on back of the clubheads): 3 thru 9 iron, + 3 wedges (PW, sand, chipper). Those super heavy clubheads really help me get my swing down and thru the ball. Also I carry an old Taylor 18-degree rescue club, 17-degree and 14 degree ImagineGolf metalwoods, and the famous Pat Simmons "alien" 1-iron. Finally a real brick-on-a-stick, the big-headed Bettinardi Ben Hogan model putter which is excellent for taking the break out of short putts and getting the ball hole high on long ones. Wait....is that 15 clubs? Oh well....
    • this topic brought to mind one my favorite golf-spectator memories. Back when, living in Santa Barbara CA, parked in my yellow cab just behind the 10th tee  (c. 380 yard par 4) at SB Muni golf course while eating lunch. A twosome comes by, and first up is this fat little mexican guy who takes a kinda squirelly practice swing, then addresses the ball and bashes a long, high, perfectly straight drive up to w/in about 5 yards of the green. Other guy is dressed to the 9's, pulls out what looks like a $300 driver....and hits a maybe 150-yard pop fly. Slams clubhead to the ground and yells, "it's fat! It's fat! Everything is fat today!!"  And that's how I learned what a "fat" shot is.

    • It may not be surprising that in the previous 7,064 posts, this particular point has been discussed. To which I will counter: If we're talking about results, why only the majors? Unless you know something that I don't, neither of us are in any position to judge whether Woods or Nicklaus lived their overall life better, not that such a thing is even objectively measurable, nor is it relevant to the discussion.
