So I'm sitting here at the airport reading the May 2009 issue of Golf Magazine (my flight is delayed 3 hours because the plane was grounded due to mechanical problems and "it's taking some time getting the other one out")

Anyway...

The magazine has a great section reviewing all the big name's clubs (irons, hybrids, fw woods and drivers) and how they stack up to one another for 2009.

From what it looks like, PING is blowing everyone away. Nobody compares in their ratings. Does this sound right? I know PING is an excellent club maker, but these ratings makes Mizuno, Nike, Callaway, Cleveland, everyone look awful.

Typically, amongst all these company's clubs, there's a trade off between workability and forgiveness. There's graphs and such showing this for each company. PING's graph has virtually zero trade off. The G10 and Rapture V2 drivers have maxed out workability AND forgiveness. All of the iron sets they list (S57, i10, G10, Rapture V2) have high workability and high forgiveness. There is a little trade off, but they're far and away better than everyone else's.

So I'm wondering: Who plays PING? Who's hit PING (specifically these clubs)? How do you feel they stack up to the likes of other top club makers? Do you feel Golf Magazine's ratings are warranted (feel free to pick up the magazine)?

I've been wondering about the new ping stuff. So this is my subscription to this thread. I'm still hitting my old ISI's and still like 'em

yeah they're good...but not the best in every department. They are an acquired taste in clubs - the irons especially. Don't think many people would agree that they are the best in all departments.

I was fitted recently and i'm actually selling all my Ping clubs, irons and wedges. Lost my faith lol

I have owned a few different PING sets (ISI/G2) and now the G10's and I like the new G10's thus far. I have not played that many rounds this year yet to give a more detailed opinion though. I did just pick up the new G10 3 wood and I like the feel of it as well as it seems more forgiving than my previous Titliest 904F.

I've played ISI-K irons 3-SW since '96 and to this day have only changed out (recently) shafts for project x 6.0's and new grips. I love the head too much to pass it up. I've hit many new ones and thought about gettin the I-10's but haven't had the dough. Their G10 driver is very very good. It's personal preference but I can't say i'd play anything else, not until they without a doubt make the ping's look bad. so far..nothing close.

Do you find the G10 driver more forgiving than the R7? I've been debating upgrading my driver.

Here's my PING opinion:

They are UGLY.

I played a Ping TiSi driver back in the day and that thing was a bruiser, but i could never get used to the look of any of their other clubs with the exception of course of the Anser. Great putter.

That was a generalization. Actually, the new drivers are pretty good looking. Especially that little half-crescent moon thing they've got going on on the top of the crown. Nice touch.

Ive got a Ping Anser and I really like it. IMO, its just as good as any Cameron, Odyssey, T.P. Mills or Bettinardi Ive ever hit. (not to meantion is costs 1/3 as much $$$)
Ive dabbled with some Ping irons (G2, G5) and Ping Tour wedges and they were OK, but they dont have the feel of Mizunos.
IMO, Ping makes great clubs but I wouldnt say they are the dominant brand. My biggest beef with Pings is the price. $1100 for a set of Rapture irons???? Are they nuts? Even G10 irons are $800. Before I spend $800 for a set of G10s I'll go buy a set of MX-100s for $600 or I'll spend just as much money on a set of MX-950s or MX-200s and at least have a set of forged irons.

ive been playing my isi-k's for 10 years now. i can fade/draw the ball on demand with the 2 iron all the way down to the 7 iron ( i dont try with anything shorter than that) and they are plenty forgiving for those days when my swing doesnt feel like clicking...

i currently have a g5i anser putter, a craz-e, an anser 2, anser 4, and im about to buy a 50th anniversary anser putter.. i honestly like the feel of the old- school ping putters over the newer versions... but you can never have too many putters.

i had a set of ping tour 54 and tour 58 wedges... i liked them when i got them, but ive just found i like the vokeys better, i can control the trajectory, spin, and manipulate the clubface better with the vokeys..

i dont own a ping driver and never have, but my dad has the zing blondie,g2, g5, and g10 drivers in his basement and ive hit them a few times.. they really bomb the ball. my dad has been playing ping irons for the last 26 years, he has had a basement full of karstens, eyes, eye2s, zings, zing2's, i-3, g2's (he recently sold all but the zings and g2's) and is contemplating buying a set of g10's. he will die a slow painful death before he plays any other irons but pings. its kinda funny ....

while i love my irons and my dad loves anything ping... (mostly beacuse they're american made and he supports jobs in america rather than overseas) i know they're not quite the best out there.. i can really tell a difference between a cast iron and a forged one, but they aint low quality either.

hope this helps... id just go out and hit every club you can get your hands on before you make your decision.. and get a proper fitting...

I tested out a bunch of Ping clubs (among many others) as I was getting fit for my new irons. I hit them OK, but the offset on the g10s just didn't fit my eye.

The g10 3 wood and hybrid are beautiful - can't say enough about them and can't wait to add the driver to complete the set.

I don't even know how this is possible. Unless I'm totally wrong on what workable even means, it seems to me that anything workable

Isn't forgiving more along the lines of "Oops, I miss-hit the ball, but I don't want terrible results", while workability is more "I hit it on the sweet spot, planned to play a draw, and now the ball is drawing."

Aren't G10s $700 (with steel shafts)? Which is pretty much the same price as every other comparable option out there. AP1s are $700, Callaway X-22 $700, TM Burners $700, Nike Victory Red $700, Mizuno X200s $700. It doesn't seem like they are that expensive when compared with other top brands.

And the Raptures have some crazy titanium face in them. Titanium probably costs more (think TM r7 fairways...the steels vs. the titaniums), so this could cause it. I'd never drop $1000 on a set, but from what I've heard, the clubs are long and forgiving. To the OP, the graphs in the article you read were not meant to be compared to other brands' graphs. There's a little disclaimer right next to the graphs saying something to the effect of "Don't use this chart to compare xxxx clubs to xxxxxxx clubs." I like my PING clubs. I have i10 irons and an i-series putter. I really like the irons and are the best option for me. The putter is good. It has very good feel, but I have hit better putters. I haven't really hit their drivers side by side with my SuperQuad, so no help in that department. I have hit the older Rapture and I wasn't impressed with the feel at all. The results were good though. The newer woods that I have hit (G10s) have good feel, sound, and produce good results. I just don't like the lower profile face off the tee. PING makes good clubs, but I'd try everything out before you buy...they may not be for you.

I hit the G5's (driver and woods) much better than the G10's. I have no idea why. Love my ping putters. I have a craz-e mallett and a redwood anser.

Do you find the G10 driver more forgiving than the R7? I've been debating upgrading my driver.

It is certainly a larger head than the R7. I've never hit the R7 so I can't comment. I did have a G10 driver in the bag for the last 10 months or so. I swapped out with my current driver last month.

The G10 was a very forgiving driver and created some very solid distance. I had a shaft in it that was just a bit "higher flying" than I wanted.....ran accross the Sumo deal and jumped on it. I'm enjoying my G5 irons and wedges.....been in the bag for a month or so, too. They are forgiving yet I'm still able to hit cuts, draws and on occasion I'm able to dial up a big, low trajectory, hooking marvel out of the woods to get me back in the hole. I've got no complaints regarding these sticks.

Now that I think of it, yes. It dawns on me now that my (deliberate) draws and fades are struck pretty well... it's not like I need to hit the toe to get a particular result.

I bought the I-3 irons used for $160.00 3-PW in great condition. I have been playing them for a year. I think there real good. I played Tommy Armour 845s for 10 years before, also a good club, but the Pings are much heavier.
