Mizuno Irons

I'm interested in buying a set of Mizuno irons, but confused about which type of player the various sets are targetted at. I know that the MX100 and MX200 are game improvement irons, but what about the MP series? Do you need to be a better player to hit all of them?

The MP Series of irons are for 'better players' (although I play the MP-60's very well). They tend to be more 'blade like' with less offset and less forgiving. The new sets in 50's (MP-52/57) are more forgiving than those in the 60's (MP-62/67) which are intended for pretty good players. The MX line is their game improvement line. For the most part, in recent years the lower numbers in a set tend to be more forgiving with higher numbers being for a little better level of player (in MX line the MX-100 is more game improvement than the MX-200 and the same is true in MP lines with the MP-52 being much more forgiving than the MP-67).

If I was you I'd plump for the MX-200's; they're forgiving but still offer a good amount of feel (they're forged unlike the mx-100's). If you're looking long-term and willing to suffer a bit for the next six months then the mp-52's are your best bet. It will take time to adjust from a forgiving, game improvement iron to a small head with only a modicum of forgiveness. However it will force you to become a better ball-striker, and you will never need to buy another set of irons once you get used to them.

I've hit both the MX-100 and MX-200. I found the MX-100's to be more forgiving. When hit right , I agree that the MX-200 felt great. For me, the MX-100's would be my choice. If I were a better player, I'd look to the MX-200 but I'll take the move forgiving of the 2 at this time. Note, of the clubs I've hit, I also liked the Ping G-10 and the Callaway X-22.

the MX-200's are great irons. i play with a buddy who uses them and not only do they look good, but they feel good too.

I totally agree with this. The flip side is that you can order a set anyway you want. So, if you can't hit the long/mid irons of the MP52, get them in the MX200. That will give you a lot of growth in the scoring irons down the road.

I recently got the MP 60s. I went from a GI iron to these.

My game has suffered a bit. I hit most shots off the toe with a bit of the over the move, pull, but when it went off the toe pushed it more online.

The MP 60s do not like this. Off the toe hits are very bad where with my last irons I got away with this. So in conclusion if you want to know what you are doing wrong and want to work, go with something less forgiving.

Sidenote: They feel awsome and the sweet ones are sweet.

I was only slightly better (handicap-wise) than you are now when I switched to the MP-57s. My suggestion is to hit the MP series irons at a demo day and find the ones you like. Mizuno's website has a listing of demo days, so hopefully one is near you. Mizuno also does fitting for free, so make sure you get that.

Also, there are a few threads on "integrated" Mizuno sets - some MPs here, some MX there, and so on. You might well decide to get, say, 6-P in MP-52s, and either hang onto your ?-5 or get those in the MX series, or various other ideas. Do you need to be a better player? No, of course not. I'm pretty sure MP stands for "Mizuno Player," but that doesn't mean you can't get them. I like to refer to so-called Players' irons, in the hands of someone with a double digit handicap (such as you or me) as "Swing improvement clubs". As has already been mentioned in this thread, there are things you can get away with on SGI/GI clubs that the MPs won't tolerate.

I just switched from Taylormade Burner Plus irons (sgi I believe) to MP-57's about a week and a half ago. My game hasn't suffered at all and may have become a little more consistent. Not better just more consistent. My mis-hits aren't any worse than with the TM's. When hit perfect I can hardly feel the ball come off the face. I'm sure everyone would have different results but I am glad I made the switch.

I personally wouldnt be shy about buying cast Mizunos. Even cast Mizunos have great feel and cast clubs are now to the point where there is no noticable different in feel from cast to forged.

im planing on getting some mx 100s and right now i have a 12 handicap at a pretty easy course

im out golfing about every other day and im wondering if it will be worth me buying them or should i get the less forgiving kind of Mizunos?

I don't really agree with this. Unless you are talking Mizuno Cast vs Forged. I have not hit their cast clubs. I have gone from cast to forged back to cast. There is a very noticeable difference in feel.

Can't say I agree with this either; I went from mx-17's (cast) to mp-60's and the difference in feel is meteoric. Mizuno's cast irons feel a bit like shovels; honestly don't know why they bother making them.

If you like the MX-100's you should try the MX-25s. You can get a set for around 450. The have a great feel to them and are forgiving.

The difference in feel is all in your mind. There was a study done recently where they had a bunch of tour pros hit several different irons. Some forged, some cast. Almost all of them set they could tell no difference in feel between the cast and forged irons and would have no problem with playing a cast iron.

So, you boys can believe what you want, but the so-called softness and feel of forged irons is nothing more than a placebo effect. Softness comes from the metal that is used. The process that is used to make the club has no effect whatsoever on how soft the club feels.

Cost is one reason. MX-100s are about $100 less expensive than MX-950s. Not everyone is convinced that they NEED forged irons.
