Need help for a yardage gap

Hi,

In between my 22 Degree wood and my 4 iron, there is a 30 yard gap.

I was thinking about adding a different club but I already have 14 clubs!

I do have a 25 degree Cleveland launcher, which I can use.

What do you guys think?

Anything is appreciated! Thanks!

That's an odd gap you have. You are only gaining 5 yards by using a 5 iron over the 6 iron. I'd say drop the 5 or the 6 iron and put in that 25* which you probably hit 185ish.

I second that. I think you are having trouble hitting the 4i and 5i and that's causing some of that big gap.

Realistically, I hit my 19* wood and 2i about the same distance (vastly different trajectory). A 22* wood would probably be comparable distance to a well struck 3i. There shouldn't then be a 30 yard gap there unless you're not striking those clubs well. Pick up some hybrids. Replace the 4i and 5i with a 4H and 5H and you will probably spread out that 5yard gap to more like 10-12 yards and you will fill in that range nicely. Alternately, the 25* wood might serve as a replacement for those clubs as well, but judging by the distances, those longer irons are probably inconsistent and hard to hit for you anyway, correct?

Is there a reason you need to fill that gap? i.e. a long par-3 on your favorite course or a required layup distance on a dogleg hole?

For scoring purposes, it's good you don't have a gap in the shorter irons. I wouldn't worry about a gap in the longer irons/woods unless there's a specific playability concern. I have a 25 yard gap between 3h and 5w, but it doesn't affect my scoring ability on the courses I frequent most.

Only 10 yards difference between the clubs, some only 5? I'd say it should be closer to 12-15. As others point out, it's probably got to do with struggling with longer irons. If you gained 5 yards with each club and hit the longer irons better, your 4i would fly 185-190 yards.

If you have trouble with longer irons, switching them out with hybrids is a good idea. You hit the woods great, a hybrid is very similar to a wood, so you'd most likely fill that gap and hit them longer than the respective irons.

As most have said, is there a need to consistently choose a club between 170 and 200? One thing I might consider there is perhaps trying a 4-hybrid instead of a 4-iron blade. Maybe the distance on the 4H goes to 185 and bridges half the gap.

Your distances aren't that far off from mine (although I have a 10-12 yard gain between clubs) a new 4H should go 185-190, I think. Again as been said, maybe you're just mis-hitting the 4, 5-irons.

I second the thought that says do not take a wedge out to make room for another wood or hybrid. Consider how many times you'd hit that "longer" club in a round versus the scoring opportunities of having that wedge in the bag near the green. That needs to be considered too.

Guys are right about not hitting my 4 and 5 irons as well as other clubs.

I think I'm going to take the 4 iron out, and put a 4 hybrid in or the 25degree wood.

The only problem is that I usually use my 4 iron for punch shots out of the forest or under trees. Would a 5 iron play the same?

Best advice is .... stay out of the woods!!! Your five iron is probably 4 degrees loft, more than your 4-iron. Of course it will, with a slightly higher trajectory. Press your hands forward to de-loft the 5-iron and away you go.

Why don't you just dial down your 22*? The best thing I have learned in the past few months is distance control using the same clubs. I am able to hit my hybrid (22*) anywhere from 175 to 205. Try it at the range, I bet it's easier than you think.

Punching out with 5, 6 or 7i is no problem, just get the hands well in front to de-loft. Ruckus' suggestion might also work. I know some don't advice it, but I like to grab down on the grip when I need to go shorter with a club. Shorter backswing works too I guess, but I find it hard to do consistently.

I say replace the 4 iron with a 4 hybrid. I just did that because I hit my 3H so much more consistently than my 4 iron, and figured the 4H would be a nice swap. Then you can work on dialing down the 4 hybrid as necessary. I like to choke down about 1/2 inch on my long clubs to take off a few yards. Choking down a bit gives you the same loft, but shortens the club, which will shave off a few yards.

I hate removing wedges to fix gaps at the longer distances. The short game is where you really can score. Keep your wedges in the bag.

I would ditch the 60* and ad a 5w or 7w

      I don’t measure my intake either. I generally have a black coffee, a bottle of soda, some sweet tea at home, and anything in between is water. An ice cold bottle of water is one of my favorite things. It feels like an immediate refresher for my body. I’ll admit that I need to drink a little more though.

      For such a nice membership, there have been some bad incidents in the past few years.  We had someone voted out a couple of years ago over something he did and he harassed the board members for three months until he moved out of the area.   Generally they’ve tried to do things like tournament handicaps and identify certain people who they know should be lower and adjust it somehow.  I can understand not wanting to go thru something like the guy who was voted out again i emailed the pro who forwarded it to the handicap committee.  They are going to see what can be done.  I walked someone thru what happened and they are going to nudge him to post the score from the match and see what he does.  Since he didn’t put anything in the electronic scoring past 13, based on how he played 14 and 15 plus having to take bogey on 16-18 for after he left, he should post 83.  We’ll see if it’s even higher,   Since he was really even thru 13, then doubled 14 and parred 15 my guess is he really shot 75 being generous and giving him 2 pars and a bogey on the three holes he didn’t play.    i shot 88, getting 16 shots for my course handicap which is net even and I lost on 13.  We do brackets where handicaps should be within 4-5 of each other.  Most matches only have 1-2 shots as a difference between players  neither of us posted the score yet.  There was something in the match play rules about whether or not to post your score.  I couldn’t remember if we were supposed to or not.  I don’t think he was going to post that, because even with his inflated score it would be the lowest score in his recent 20. Lucky I didn’t because they want to see what he does post and they don’t want me posting so he can try to calibrate his score.
