What is the most likely cause for me blading my 60 and sand wedge lately.

From like 85 yards, I'll take a nice easy swing, catch it thin and it sails 30 yards over the green. Drives me crazy!!

I've tried to mess with ball position and get under it, nothing is working. I have my next Club Championship match coming up and I need to fix this. I have zero confidence with the wedges in my hands right now. I'm considering playing bump and run shots from 80 yards if I can't figure out what's causing this.

Anyone??

Probably not staying down and through the shot. You might be popping up out of your posture, causing you to hit the ball on the upswing. I dont know if thats what is going on with you, but when i blade a wedge, that is useally the reason.

just because it is higher loft does not mean you swing under the ball...do you try to sweep under the ball with a 5 iron? same relative idea depending on what kind of shot you want to hit...hit DOWN on the ball...even with a 60*. when you get closer to the green and try hitting flopshots and finesse shots then you can try to sweep under....but for a full length shot just hit like any other iron

My guess is that you are not turning your body through it, If it doesn't happen with a full swing, but only on easy swings this is a likely fault.

You're likely not getting your weight forward, not staying down at impact. You're too eager to look up to see where the ball is going.

...

You don't want to 'get under' ANY lofted club. You want to pinch the ball between the turf and the face of the club.

Slow down the swing, with high lofted wedges I find it helpful to not take a huge full swing as that compounds your chances of hitting it fat or thin. Even though they are the shortest clubs in your bag, doesn't mean they're necessarily easier to hit...

I ifnd that when I'm making a total mess of my LW, its because I've started decellerating to the ball, afraid I'm going to hit too hard, meaning I pull up and blade it.

The only time I ever focus on one part of my swing is my LW. I only think about the follow-through on the swing, and that keeps me from rocketing the ball over the green.

Something that I am currently working on, and seems to be helping me a lot, is focusing on the ball . It's quite a weird feeling the first time you see the dark patch where the ball once was, but it sure helps you make a much better strike of the ball more often. Irrespective of your swing speed, swing plane, stance, hand position, or body turn, this helps you make the best strike. It also helps to keep your head still.

A friend who plays off four, with the weirdest three quarter punchy swing playing a consistent fade, has this principle as the cornerstone of his game. He practiced by putting a tee in the ground, and focused on hitting the head of the tee. He makes the most beautiful contact with the ball, and he knows his swing - hence the low numbers.

1) hands extended to the ground but relaxed
2) play the ball back of center
3) slight forward press
4) take the club back shaft on line with the target
5) make sure when the shaft is hip high that the toe is pointing up and the face is perpendicular to the target (right side of the target behind you)
6) take the club back hip high and hit chips make sure that the club face naturally turns over so that when you are at finish the toe is facing up in the air and the face of the club is pendicular to the target (left side of the target in front of you)

If you practice this drill in the impact zone with all your irons you will improve you contact with all your irons including your fairway and driver. practice this on grass instead on the driving range mat if possible.

Lifting up before impact or sliding are both very common causes of this problem. Another is 'flipping' the clubhead past the hands at impact. You want to make sure you stay still and keep the hands ahead of the clubhead at impact.

Another thing that sometimes happen when players 'slow down' their swing is their body gets a little out of sync and can cause you to over or under turn your body result in thin or fat shots (or pulls, pushes, sh**ks, etc.)

    • I did not realize that, I was thinking a more traditional golf club.
    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
