im looking at purchasing a driver and came across 3 drivers and wanted to get some feedback as to what you think is the best and a better option for me. im just getting back into golf so i have a lot of work to do on my swing and have yet to start playing and rounds yet. im sticking to the driving range and putting greens for awhile to dial in my swing and improve on my short game and putting and when im not there im at a near by park swinging away with the birdie ball. my current handicap is high and it appears so far i have a tendency to slice although im in the process of fixing that.

The 3 drivers i found are all brand new Taylor Made:
R7 limited for $169.99
09 burner $179.99
burner tour $129.99

im not sure which one is better than the others or if there is any real/major difference between the three so any help would be appreciated. i like the price of the burner tour, i also like the movable weights in the R7 limited, and i like the 09 burner has i have heard many positive things/reviews, plus its the latest and greatest of the 3 im looking at although since TM releases new clubs alot im not sure if there is a significant difference between the 09 one and the others.

thanks to all who reply...

I suggest you take a look at the 07 burner. It is a better club (imo) than any other club you listed for a beginner. I myself am buidding on several on ebay as we speak. I swung a bunch at my local golf store and it seemed to feel the best and be the most consistant compared to several other brands amd models. It also has a slightly closed face which will help get rid of your slice.

I tried all of those when I was looking for a new driver. I chose the 07 Burner. The most forgiving to me and hit the most consistantly.

i saw sports authority was carrying a burner driver for $149.99 is that the 07 one? i did not see any documentation stating it was or wasnt. i know its not the 09 since those are going for $199.99 there.

what makes the 07 one better than the 09? is it just that its more forgiving? what about distance with the 07 and the other three i mentioned above?

I had an R7 TP limited (I think it was limited) and gamed it for a couple weeks. It was very solid but not very long at all. It'd stay in the fairway but played 10-15 yards shorter than the old 983E I was bagging.

I went through the new driver purchase process a few months back and tried each of these drivers (as well as just about everything else made). I have always liked Taylor Made drivers just because of the very solid feel and sound on impact. From that perspective I liked the 4 models mentioned (counting both 07 and 09 Buners). All had a good feel. However, I hated the 2 Burner models because of that damn decal on top. It is to distracting. For shape and look I prefer the Tour Burner. The R7 Limited has the adjustable weights so it you are wanting to be able to 'treak' your swing you can do that, but this doesn't by any means give you the ability to fix a bad swing (for that you might find the R9 a better fit, although it also won't 'fix' a bad swing). I though the 09 Burner might have been the longest of the bunch, followed by the 07 Burner and Tour Burner. I don't think the R7 was much shorter, but on the simulator that day I was hitting it a little shorter but I suspect it was the particular shaft in it). Which reminds me - don't forget about the shaft when considering these drivers. In most cases the shaft makes as much or more difference in the club than the head does. You want to make sure you get the correct flex (tame the ego and get the one that truly fits your swing speed). Also important can be torque and kick point depending on your swing. It's best to see a professional about this.

I see so many guys buy new drivers and not be happy after a few rounds. Most of it is because they got the wrong shaft or wrong loft, either because of their ego or lack of knowledge. The 'right' driver with the wrong parameters for you is the wrong driver. Good luck and I hope you find the perfect fit for your game.

The 3 drivers i found are all brand new Taylor Made:

I currently play both the R7 Limited and the Tour Burner. I have played the 07' Burner, but not the 09' Burner.

Being that you are a higher handicap, I think the regular Burner, 07' or 09' version, would be best for you. They both possess more forgiving 460cc clubheads, whereas the Tour Burner and R7 Limited have 450cc and 440cc sized heads, respectively. The regular Burners also have the superfast technology (lighter weight ond longer length shaft) to produce (in theory) longer tee shots.

Irons: Cobra AMP 4-GW

Wedges: Callaway Forged Copper 56* and 60*

Putters: Scotty Cameron  35" (Several of the flow neck blade variety)

Ball: Bridgestone B330-RX and Srixon Z-Star

Bag: Nike Performance Carry

I couldn't hit the R7 ltd as long as with the burner (I tried 09), but the ltd was very easy to hit straight and, for me, there were very few mishits. Since I am a high handicapper, I had to swallow the pill and take ease of striking, and ease of finding fairway over distance. What is odd, is that I think the Ltd is geared towards the lower handicapper...but whatever the balls doing is different for you is all that matters. Look fwd to learning what you ended up with!

any thoughts/comments on the TM burner 3 & 5 woods? it appears as though they are from the the 07,08 line. i need some fairway woods as well and came across a good deal and wanted to get some feedback. are the fairway woods by TM just as good as the drivers they have, or should i be looking at something else for a good 3 and 5 wood? i already have the TM burner combo which comes with the 3 and 4 hybrid so should i get a 5 wood?

yea i just need to get my butt to a golf shop and get fitted and figure out my swing speed, shaft flex and all that stuff to help me make a decision and choose the right driver. the only golf shop i know of near me is an edwin watts, does anyone know of other golf shops in the south florida/ft lauderdale area that i should look at/consider? How much does Edwin watts charge to get fitted?

Id just go with a 3 wood. The 3 hybrid should be somewhat close in distance to a 5 wood so i find the extra wood to be unnecessary

My father has the R7 limited it's a very nice driver. I'd goto the nearest driving range, pro shop, or sporting goods store and give it a shot I'd bet you'd like it

    • I can't say that I remember a lot of individual putts, but I do have one specific memory.  The first time I played the Old Course, I had hit a pretty good drive on the 6th hole.  I had about 60 yards left, and due to the swale in front of the green, there was no chance of flying a wedge on or near the green and having it stop on the green.  My caddie recommended either a running 7-iron chip or a putt, and I took the putter and a pretty hard swing.  The ball rolled over humps and through hollows, disappeared into the swale in front of the green, and re-appeared heading right at the hole.  I ended up maybe 12 feet away.  The caddie turned and held out his hand to shake mine, and said "Now THAT was a golf shot!"
    • For the first time since 2021, I made a 3 on the 12th at Stoneleigh.    395 yards, something like 80 feet uphill, I hit a solid drive and a 7-wood to inside a foot.  Even I couldn't miss that one.  I feel like I haven't played a lot of golf this year, but I'm making decent progress.
