Massive soles on irons?!

I'm in the market for some new irons. I've had this set for 7 or 8 years and they were somewhat inexpensive when I bought them in the first place. I was at golf galaxy and I was blown away at the size of some of these irons, especially the soles. I demoed a few of these fat soles and I hated them. It was like swinging a shoebox. The taylor made tour burners were cool and seemed similar to what I have now, but the topline still felt chunky. I really liked the look of the nike split cavity's but when I told the guy my handicap (which is mostly due to putting and chipping...which I'm getting much better at ) and he said I should get something with a fat sole.

Obviously, I could care less what he says and will get what I want. I want to get better and not mask my mishits with some ultra fat soles. Plus, from what I read, those are more for people that hit fat shots. My miss hit is generally a thin shot and more times than not is distance control. My ball striking has got a lot better over the last 4 or 5 months.

Would I be crazy to buy a set of splity cavity nikes and not a more forgiving set? My current set has a pretty slim sole and the cavity is much more shallow than a lot of clubs. I have no idea about the offset though. I would just keep them, but I've got some cash and want a new set.

Try the Mizuno MP-58. They should be plenty forgiving enough. I agree, I think nearly all of the current iron offerings are grotesque looking and many of them do in fact have chunky soles. Mfrs need to get back to the basics.

+1- The chunky soles are a total turn off, and the thick toplines look like 2x4's at address. I bought a set of X-18's, great irons, but the chunkiness look couldn't be overcome.

Go with what YOU like, considering you're the one that is going to be using them.

I was also looking at split cavity Nike VRs at the start of this year. I ended up going for the Nike Slingshot HL's

They do have a slightly bigger sole but looking down on then you would never know, its disguised well and not offputting. Also they dont feel chunky liek the Big Berthas with fat soles do.

I am a high handicapper and have seen significant improvement with the slingshots.

I agree... just can't hit something with a fat topline and giant sole... I couldn't even look at the Callaway X-forged because the topline was too thick looking for me. The V-reds should be plenty forgiving.

My brother-in-law just started last year and he does fine with my old Cleveland TA-5's.

Wow, all the mizuno and bridgestone clubs look amazing. Funny how they were never on my radar before. The MP-58's look a bit beyond my skill level, but the view at address is awesome. Who knows, maybe I'll really like them. My favorite club in the bag is my 46 degree wedge.

The MX-300's look nice too. More forgiving, but still have a nice profile. Those bridgestone J36's look real nice too.

After exploring the mizuno site more, the combo set looks very interesting.

Personally the chunky soles or topline don't bother me, its the offset that comes along with them that kills me. Take a look at the Titleist AP1.

i was decideing between the MP-57's, Nike VR Splits and the AP2's
AP2's licked a$$, hated the way they looked at address and the way they felt

the Nike's were awesome, I still think they make quality irons that look and feel great - just couldnt stand spending that $$

I ended up w the MP-57's
havent actually received them yet to try them on the range, but they felt great in the store and had decent numbers on the launch monitor
i bought them on ebay for $500 CDN shipped to me door - should be here tomorrow

The offset is another reason. I'd like to know what the offset is on my current set has.

If anyone's interested, the Nike Split Cavities are on sale for $765.00 at the golf warehouse. However, there on ebay for $550-$600.

I really like the mx-300's. I'm gonna see if dick's or golf galaxy have them to demo. They're retailing at $800, but I'm sure they'll be cheaper on ebay once they're in circulation a bit more

If I had this issue (my current one is whether to leave the 2, 3, or 4 iron in the car in order to add the Fybrid and stay at 14 clubs) I would try to combine a couple of similar sets - one CB and one blades. The decision would be at which iron to start the blades (personally, I'd start with the 5 or 6 iron)
