So in three years my handicap (according to yahoo.com) has started at about 50 (no joke ) to about 20.3.
Now I figured to get down to single digits (new goal) I should keep stats on my game to figure out what I need to work on.
Well the last 5 rounds have been a huge eye opener.
I knew my putting was holding me back but holy crap.
I average about 38 putts a round

And the other day I shot a 90 on a pretty easy par 70.
I hit 8 fairways and had 9 GIR but I had 44 putts!!
I would put a puke face next to that 44 but its not an option.

So is that as bad as I think or can anyone step up and say they are a worse putter then me.

Sorry if I don't check this forum for a while as I will be on a practice green every chance I get. lol

Wow. At least you know what to work on. Shouldn't be too hard to drop your handicap.

Been playing just a few months but I play almost every day.

i to have been keeping stats on the course to lower my handicap. Earlier this week i played 18 and i hit all but 1 fairway, which was a surprise to me since i fight a very bad slice and every drive was dead straight.I had only 2 G.I.R. and too many putts. But now i know what to work on. So hopefully the stat keeping helps

I used to be a lot like that, but now it's getting a little better. Trouble getting GIRs, but I'm pretty good with the wedge so I can put it close enough to get my up and down, or bogey at worst. I'm not spectacular with the putter, as I usually have 17-18 putts a round (9 holes). I've been good about not three-putting; I 2-putt just about every green, but there are always a good amount that I know I can 1-putt.

course management and club selection at whatever given distance. on a par 3 make it to the green in 1 so you have a chance at a birdie and 2 putting wont hurt too bad for a par 4 do it in 2 and for a 5 do it in at lease three if not 2 for a chance at eagle. there are also instance where there are drivable par 4s which may also give you a chance at eagle.

Forget your opponents; always play against par. ~Sam Snead

Kills me too. I don't remember the last time I hit a putt longer than 10 feet. Lucikly, I've brought down my 3 putt percentage but still need a GIR to get a par. Forget a birdie, I've had countless birdie chances in the last six months without making any of them.

If it's not within 4 feet I will miss.

That's a long way for me to say - I feel your pain!

38 putts in a round wouldn't be so bad if you hit every green in regulation. (;

Given you cap, I have to ask "how is your wedge play" I miss loads of greens wich means I tend to have shorter putts as I have to chip it close. I had 19 putts today in an effort to a 14 over par. Ugly day for the irons, but a good day around the green.

Your all making me feel better. I thought my putting was killing me but I average around 30-31 putts per round. I've been keeping track of my stats fro the last 5 years and my putts per round has barely budged where my average score has dropped from 79 to 72.5. The days that I'm good on the greens are days that I'm in the red figures.

Putting is such a feel thing generally the more i'm playing the better my putting cause my speed is better. I wish on the days that I can read a green that I could bottle it for later.

PM sent. I need all the help I can get.

I have completely gutted my old style and made it as simple a stroke as possible. But does anyone know (or know a good website) that shows a basic set-up for a stance and also what type putters fit different types of putting techniques. The only thing I have found talks about being a right arm or left arm dominant putter. It says I should keep my eyes right above the target line and use a center shafted putter. Anyone got any other ideas? P.S. plus seeing low cappers putting (close) to me does make me feel better.

Just really quick but if we are going worst putter for handicap I think I get that medal. I know, I'm so miserable right now every time I step out on the greens. Try hitting 13, 14, 15 greens averaging 15 feet as your first putt and still manage to have 33 putts per round. It's killing me. If you solve it, let me know.

Not a title I want. if I have more than 30 putts in a round it is a bad day.
Practice as often as possible to develop feel. The greater the variety of greens you practice and play on the better.

After watching Phil go back to how he "putted as a kid" and win the Tour Championship, I decided to go back to my putting system I used until I got to college. So, it's back to a really short toe weighted blade style putter, a slightly open stance and forward press.

I will report back on how it goes next time I play. After years of trying to build a "textbook" stroke, I'm going "native" and going back to how I putted before I learned there were books that teach how to putt. A friend in college got me "straightened out" and made me square to the line and more of a straight back and straight through putter. For years, I thought I had to be that way.

Phil's lesson from the weekend teaches me otherwise. Besides, what do I have to lose? It's not like it can get worse.
