I voted conservative. At my level of play I am very prone to making mistakes. No reason to try to make a difficult shot and end up using up 3 strokes when I could just take 2 and lay up.

Now of course I cant say this all the time because there are times you have to go for it. If I duff my driver off the tee for a 75 yrd worm burner then you can bet I'm going after the green to at least try to save par.

It varies. If I'm on the fairway 230+ out, I probably wont try to hit a 3 wood to the green, but if I hit a couple bad balls and I'm still 230 out I have nothing to lose at this point, but that usually leaves me with a frosty snowman following the hole.

I play conservative as well. For example...

176 yard par 3, pin back, little wind, no trouble front. I could muscle a 7 iron straight at the pin and try to have it stop dead, but I would much rather hit a lower, controlled shot with 6 iron and try and land it at the front/middle of the green and let it release for an uphill putt, and hopefully, a decent birdie chance. If I miss short, I still have a good lie with some green to work with for a chip shot and a more than likely par.

Same goes for any other shot. If there is trouble left and a front pin on that same par 3, I may take that same 6 iron and hit a high fade right at the left side of the green. If I hit it straight, I'm putting, if I hit it perfect, I'm in with a birdie. If I overcook it, I'm still out of trouble on the right side of the green.

I tend to play in the moment... sometimes being agressive seems like the right choice and sometimes playing conservatively seem best. In general, unless distance is artificially limited by a hazard, demanding, say, a 3 wood off the tee (or even less,) I will usually hit a driver because I tend to have as much confidence in threading a driver as any other club. From the fairway facing a forced carry that is a bit iffy, I might tend to lay-up on par fives as long as hitting the green in regulation is likely after a layup. But most of the time I am a "closer is better" type player.

i play very similar to you - in the moment i rarely will not pull driver, and if i dont the 4i comes out or even a 4w off the deck my home course has a lot of doglegs that cant be cut due to a hazard, you u have to play to the corner makes it tough though, cause you can be anywhere from 165-185 to the green - and they are par 4's! par 3's - i go for broke - at the flagstick just about 100% of the time

I am fairly straight with my driver so I hit it almost exclusively from the tee on all holes that aren't par 3's. From there I would say I am a mix of conservative to being aggressive. If the risk is as great as the reward I will rarely try for the reward and will mostly play it safe. Par is the score I am most trying to make.

I generally do what the situation calls for. Probably more conservative than I was when I was younger and could hit the ball farther. I'm shorter now, but I play smarter so my scoring is still about as good as it ever was. I'll go for a risky shot if it's needed to get back into a match, or if failure doesn't extract too severe a penalty. But generally I evaluate the risk against the reward before going for broke.

Like others, I will have a go off the tee if I seriously think I can pull it off, but I have learnt when to take my medicine and will play conservatively if I have to. If I'm under trees or suchlike I will always look for a little gap I could thread one through though. I love pulling off the low fliers that stay under branches and end up exactly where I wanted them to go. But if it's not 50/50 I will tend to take the safe option. Lost count of the number of times I thought I was going to drop a shot to par by playing safe, but then I have saved it courtesy of a good third/fourth shot and a gimme or tap in putt.
I was playing a new course (to me) on Thursday. Got to the 2nd hole and there was a stream crossing the fairway smack bang on my carry distance. The guy I was playing with (member) suggested playing safe. No chance. Out came the driver and luckily I got away with it. Big drive, landed about 5 yards this side of the stream and took a mighty bounce over and carried on running 30 yards or more up the fairway. Left me a nice easy 8 iron in. Just a shame I missed the green, and walked off with a 5!.....

I voted both, with a little slant toward conservative. I don't have the skill in my midgame to pull off many miracles, and my main goal is to avoid blowups. By doing that, I can usually come in right around 90, give or take a couple.

I'm learning to be more conservative/crafty. It goes against my nature, but the two best players ever are more conservative than their peers and only aggressive when they can or when they have to be- Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.

It's actually hard work being conservative/crafty because it requires superior course management and discipline.

Examples:
*If I'm pitching over a hazard to the green, my mindset is to get it on the green first, try to give myself a flat or right to left putt second, and knock it stiff last.

*If my tee ball places me off the fairway and I'm forced to pitch out, I try not to bite off too much. As long as I can leave myself around 150 in, I should have a good chance at getting my 3rd near or on the green.

*I play for my misses and I pull clubs according to how I'm striking it that day not how I strike it when I hit it nut flush. Off the tee, if I'm slicing it, I play it by teeing up on the far right hand side of the box, aiming left, and bringing it back in. If I'm hooking it, I know I'm f*cked so I pull 3 wood. I don't try to fix my swing mid round.

As I said, this is much easier said than done. My scoring could be better if I did this with more discipline.

I used to be really conservative on the golf course and only hit driver on holes longer than 350 yards. But, in 2001 I was diagnosed with a tumor on my spinal cord and told I might be paralyzed, might never play golf again, or might even die.

So, the last time I played before the surgery, at the first hole which was only 280 yards and a par 4, I pulled out driver. My partner was shocked since I always hit a 4 iron off the tee.

He asked me why the change of heart - I told him that in two days I was going to have spinal cord surgery and when compared to being told all the possible bad outcomes, hooking my drive into the trees wasn't really that big of a problem.

Last year I finally started playing again and my new perspective really helps. So does the fact that I might never be as long as I was before so playing my own game is the only way I can score well.

But, playing my own game means always playing a club longer than I think I need and swinging at 80%. Not playing for a miss - so I take my extra club and go right at the flag, possible danger be damned!

Even off the tee I always play to cut the corner, carry the water or hit it into the tight places.

At the end of the day, what does it matter if I go OB? I am just happy to be playing golf.

(sorry for mentioning my medical problems again, but it is relevant to why I play the way I do)

I'm probably more of a conservative golfer. I love the flop shot but I only use it when it's needed, not all the time. I only try to reach par 5's in 2 if there are no hazards. That's some examples.

im the exact opposite of that i like high risk shots it makes me focus more if i lay up or go for the middle of the green im more prone to mess up because im not as focused.

i play conservative off the tee for the first few holes to see how im hitting the ball on any given day. il take 3 wood or long iron but i fire at every pin and im i miss, i miss big. when i get under par i start playin stupid taking huge risks. generally i can pull it off tho.
when im behind in any match i take driver on every hole and go for all the pins tho
