How to measure putter length?

I am in the market for a new putter and plan to buy one online this week. I measured my White Hot Rossie and it is 34" from the top of the grip to the hosel (shaft length) and approx 35" overall. Which measurement is the true length of the putter?

Ultimately use what works for you, since putting is so personal and different for each golfer. I like to keep my arms straigther at the address position so my putters are 33 inches.

Problem for me is that I live in the NW and there are no large golf shops within driving distance. Plus, I am a lefty. Combined, that means that my chances of trying out more than 1-2 putters before I buy is slim to none.

I have 6 putters, all of them are different lengths, from 31"-35". And I switch every week just for fun, just go with what feels good, people make putts all day, its the one thing you dont need to over-analyze.

The diatribe at that website seemed more rant than education.
Length depends on your address style, the shaft angle, the hosel style, and your back. I am a pendulum putter so I bend over more than most to clear my elbows, that makes for a short putter. I cannot imagine buying a putter over $20 without trying it out, it makes no sense. If you live where there are few places to try out putters then ask people at the course. You would certainly be welcome to try any of my clubs during a round and I am sure 99% of people feel the same way.

I think you were asking how to measure the length of a putter, not how to fit one to your body. Here is the USGA's measurement definition; although a driver is show, it is basically the same for a putter - measure from the top of the shaft through an extension of the shaft to the sole of the club. I've read that nearly all manufacturers use this convention except for Ping who measure to the heel of the putter, hence making a Ping measure slightly shorter than its equivalent from another manufacturer.

Yeah, that was basically it.

As I stated, no large golf stores in the area, no lefty putters to try, no opportunity to compare. As far as trying other folks' putters, lefties are more rare on the course than in the general population. The odds of me meeting up with another lefty who has a putter I am remotely interested in are, well, very remote. This is moot anyway since I ordered a Odyssey Black Series 1 34" that should be arriving any day.

Good you are asking these questions since putter fit is very important, and often overlooked. One suggestion, get the putter fit professionally once you get it in. A simple thing and won't cost much at all. If too short, a $5-10 extension. If too long, a $5 cut down. In either case, don't underestimate the importance a good grip can offer. I got a Winn grip for my Rife Antigua a while back. Similar to the blue/white Winn that came on it, but a bit larger. Get the putter fit to you and put a new grip on it. Awesome grip below and it comes in many sizes. Your local golf shop would have these for sure. I like the Winn midsize myself, but hand size will dictate what you like. Also, have the lie angle evaluated against your stance and putting stroke. Mine was recently brought upright 2 degrees and my stroke was immediately improved. Any pro can easily make these adjustments and you will have a far better putter than what was sold off the shelf. Seems many folks give thought to putter length and will often find a nice aftermarket grip that they like better than what came on the putter. But few give lie angle of the putter enough consideration. I was recently made a believer on the importance of lie angle.
