Just curious to see how often our forum members change equipment.

For me, I'm good to upgrade my driver relatively often... maybe every 18-24 months. Sad, because the driver's the most expensive club in the bag, but I'm drunk with my quest for an extra few yards off the tee.

Fairway woods -- let's just say I'm hitting a Callaway Steelhead and a Steelhead III. They stick around a good while.

Irons -- I held on to a set of Titleist DCI Golds for ten years. Before that I had a set of Wilson Staffs that I had for five. I'm playing with Titleist 704.CB's which I just picked up last year... I'm thinking they'll stick around another 5-6 years.

Wedges -- Every 3-4 years. I'd played Cleveland 588's forever, but am now hitting Nike SV's. I love 'em, for some reason.

Putter -- Now THIS is interesting. I played with a Titleist Milled Bulls Eye for about ten years. Then I went through a rapid succession of whatever was hot at the time: Never Compromise sub30, Taylor Made Rossa, and currently a Ping G5i center shafted Mini-C. I've got a pair of Scotty's at the shop though, and intend to stick with one of those for years to come. Final answer is I have no idea how long I stick with putters. I usually end up hating them all eventually.

Good question, I was just thinking of this earlier today. Ive had my driver now since the beginning of last season and it will probably stay with me through the end of next season. My irons I got in the beginning of last season as well and I can see myself changing soon. Wedges I got two years ago and dont see myself changing soon, same with the putter. I would say im good for a change once every three years.

I've been playing for more than 25 years so I've had lost of opportunity to go through a lot of clubs!

Drivers
I'll go through periods where I will try 4 or 5 different drivers until I find what I like and then I stick with it for 4 or 5 years, same thing with 3 woods.

Irons
I replace irons when they wear out, usually every 3 or 4 years. When my current set is well worn I'll start looking for something new, maybe buy a few sets and then I decide on something I like and keep using them until they wear out again. Currently I am using a three year old set of Precept Tour Preferds that are well worn. I have a backup set of the exact same specs that I may begin using soon then again I have a set of unused Ram Tour Grinds that I may give a go, I used Ram Tour Grinds for about 10 years in a row so I may end up going back to them. I also have a set of Ping Eye 2's I've always been meaning to try for a long period but never have. Then again, I may buy something new...or maybe not...

Whatever I use, I always get them fitted, you'd be mad not to.

Wedges
I rarely replace wedges unless they wear out. I used identical Phil Rodgers (Cobra) 52 and 56 degree wedges for about ten years solid, I went through a few replacements of each as well as a couple of Ram Tom Watson scoring system 60 degree Lob wedges. Currently I am "inbetween" wedges, I can't find anything that I really like so have been using some el cheapo Ram FX wedges I bought for my son and sort of liked the look of. I do like them a LOT, but being so cheap they are a bit of an embarrassment!

Putter
I have been using the same putter for 15 years and I have an identical backup. The one I am using looks so battered if I ever need the replacement it'll take a lot of getting used to.

My name is George and I'm a club ho. It's been, oh, a week since my last purchase.

Here's the longevity of everything in my bag right now.
  • 18 months to 2 years is also about my average for a driver.
  • My last set of irons (Cleveland TA5s) were in the bag for 5+ years, and I've been playing my Mizzie MP60s for the last year.
  • Hybrids -- um, a few months, still experimenting. Just replaced a 17* Nickent 3DX with an 18.5* 2006 version with the V2 shaft. So far ... Wow! I was catching it thin off the deck, but off the tee, my 3-wood's looking threatened. May have to add a second of these.
  • Wedges hang around for awhile. I'm on 2 years with my current 588s and CG10. Probably not going to switch for another year anyway. I had a Vokey SM, briefly, but I couldn't keep enough cover on the ball.
  • Putters ... I'm with Ragontona ... I seem to end up hating them after awhile. I recently experimented with a Heavy Putter, but couldn't get comfortable with it. Still, I do think it improved my stroke. I picked up a used Momentus practice putter that does the same thing for a tenth the cost. I'm back to the Tracy II (which I've had for a whopping 9 mos), but I'm also looking at the new Callie-f now. Might have to go that route at some point.

Driver: 1 Year. I usually move on to something new every year. I don't plan on this, it's just the way it works.

Fairway Woods: 2-3 years. I had a Callaway Steelhead Plus for about 5 years until I replaced it with an r7 this year. I think this is a club that once I find something I like, I want to keep it.

Hybrid: ?. I've only had one and don't plan on replacing it any time soon. One of the best clubs in my bag. Love it.

Irons: 5 Years. I just replaced my Mizuno Pro-II's in the last couple weeks. They were in my bag since '99. The irons before that (DCI's) were in my bag for close to 5 years. I don't like to change irons.

Wedges: 2-3 Years. Usually wedges run in cycles of a couple years. I put vokeys in my bag last year and have no desire to change them out.

Putters: 2+ Years: This is a hot/cold thing. I had a Two-Ball for 1 year and replaced it, but before that my Cameron Coronado was in my bag for about 4-5 years. My intention is to keep the putter for a long time, but you know how that goes...

Good topic.

Bear in mind that my perspective is that of someone who gets a lot of free clubs in a year. Were I not given free clubs every year, my turnover rate would be about "once every five years" for just about everything.

Driver: A few per year. But I cycle them in and out - I don't replace them. I have three and next year I'll probably still be using two or three of them regularly.

3W: I have two that platoon with each other. They last a year or two.

Hybrids: Ditto the 3W.

Irons: Once a year. But I'd probably use the same irons for ten years if I wasn't trying new ones all the time.

Wedges: Always Vokeys, it seems, but I have cycled through the spin milled and then the oil can spin milled lately, so... once a year.

Putter: 10 years... except that I get several per year, so again, three or so in a platoon situation.

I'm terrible..!!!

My local golf shops must love me.

I've just changed from an R7 to a G5 and had the R7 about 14 months.

Have had my 3 wood about the same as well.

Now my irons, I've lived in NZ for 3 and a half years and in that time I've had a set of Lynx Black Cats, which got changed in 2003 to Taylor Made OS, which in turn got changed in Jan 2004 to Ben Hogan Apex FTX (a wonderful set of irons - why oh why did I ever get rid of them????), these were changed earlier this year to a set of Mizuno MX900 and all I can say about them is YUCK..!!!! Now I am using a set of Tour Stage (Bridgestone) Z101 which a STUNNING...!!!!

Have just changed my wedges from Hogan Rivieras to Callaway X Tours, before the Hogans I had some Cleveland 900's

Putters - I've had my Yes! Golf Callie for about 14 months, before that I used a Ping Anser Specify, which was an excellent putter, have also had 2 x 2-Ball putters, one Taylor Made Rossa, and a SC Pro Platinum Mil Spec (I've got another one of those on the way from the Custom Shop - can't wait..!!!)

Hopefully once the new putter comes along I'll stick with what I have for a while - although I am looking at replacing my hybrid.......
In the bag:

Agreed. When I switched from my Mizunos to the Titleists I didn't notice a huge difference, but the 695's were.

I think it's like an old pair of shoes. You use them so much that nothing feels better...even if they are.
